PTI’s return to D-Chowk more ‘logistical than political’ - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

ISLAMABAD: Workers of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) shifted their party chief Imran Khan’s container to D-Chowk on Saturday, citing logistical issues at the site of their sit-in outside Cabinet Division.

PTI workers claim that though there had been substantial progress in the negotiations with the government, the move to shift the sit-in had no political reasons.

However, political analyst Zahid Hussain was of the view that the decision of the PTI and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) to shift their camps was the outcome of the Supreme Court’s orders to vacate their previous sit-in venues.

PTI sit-in organiser Ali Awan told Dawn that Mr Khan had announced on Friday night that the sit-in would move back to D-Chowk due to spatial issues.

Party workers claim that the area outside Cabinet Division lacked space, was difficult to reach
“Since most of the participants come here in the evening and stay till late night, we were getting complaints that their walking distance had increased and it was difficult for the families to participate in the sit-in because they had to cross the accommodation area of the PAT supporters,” he said.

“As PAT supporters had also shifted their camps from Parliament House to D-Chowk, we requested them to move their camps as we wanted to shift there instead. The PAT workers, therefore, shifted from D-Chowk to Constitution Avenue just after Fajr prayers on Saturday and we reached D-Chowk around noon,” he said.

After the successive moves, both the sit-ins are now stationed again at their original positions that they had occupied on the night of August 19.

Since the PAT and PTI sit-in started from Aabpara Chowk and Kashmir Highway, respectively, on August 15, the protesters first stormed the Red Zone on August 19 and then made a move towards the Prime Minister House on August 30.

After a heavy clash with the police, the protesters fixed their camps in the Parliament House lawns on August 31. Though they managed to reach the gates of Pakistan Secretariat and Prime Minister House on September 1, the protesters cleared the buildings’ premises and removed their camps on September 5.

“Around noon on Saturday, Imran Khan’s container was shifted to Parade Avenue and necessary security arrangements were made there. A separate section, secured with barbed wires, has been made for women. Media’s vehicles were also moved there,” said Ali Awan, adding the area in front of Cabinet Division was not spacious enough and was muddy.

PTI press secretary Tahir Jameel said their venue outside Cabinet Division had a pungent smell and also lacked sufficient place to sit because of the mud.

“There is a lot of space on Parade Avenue; and there are stairs for the participants to sit on. Moreover, vehicles’ parking area is close to Parade Avenue. At the Cabinet Division, the protesters had broken a water pipeline, so the issue of mud will not be resolved even after the rains,” he said.

Mr Jameel admitted that there had been a progress in the negotiations but there was no political reason behind shifting the venue to Parade Avenue.

PAT media coordinator Ghulam Ali said after Imran Khan’s announcement to shift back to D-Chowk, it was decided to remove PAT camps from Parade Avenue. “We will stay on Constitution Avenue until our demands are accepted by the government,” he said.

Political analyst Zahid Hussain, however, told Dawn that he believed that both the parties had decided to move back because of the Supreme Court’s orders.

“Both PTI and PAT were facing severe criticism for not implementing the court orders, which was why they decided to move back to Constitution Avenue and Parade Avenue. I do not see any role of negotiations in the decision of moving back to D-Chowk,” he said.

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

Media coverage has shifted to flooding & container comedians are left alone (people are tuning them out). They are moving out of red zone & soon will be going back home.

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

roughly how many people have gathered now at the d-chowk? Any idea?

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

We are hearing about that "soon" for some 24 days now. Let it go.

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

Imran and NS were actually once close allies...
.Imran then became the number 1 enemy of Altaf Hussain ( used the 12th May incident as the basis of his arrest by Brit police)....later on formed an alliance with MQM. Altaf gets arrested for some fraudulent reason in UK in 2014 and Imran wishes his followers the best and hopes bhai would be out soon.
imran unites with all the liars and corrupt politicians of Pakistan against Musharraf and then what happens after 10 years? He allies with Mush.

So much for the infallible Imran and his legitimate grievances.

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

The crowd is certainly much bigger than what could be fitted in constitutional avenue. D- Chowk is generally more user friendly in terms of natural seating plans, space and accessibility.

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

Ab D chowk main bhi pollution phailao.

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

Considering, the use of the word "alliance" means what it's supposed to mean, then mind telling me which "alliance" you are talking about?

Where is the proof of his alliance with Musharraf? Has he publicly declared his support from Musharraf or this is all self pleasing guess work and spreading of Nawaz League propaganda?

You are mindlessly throwing the word 'allies'. I REALLY hope you actually know what it means. I RECKON you are talking about Pakistan team's 1992 group photo with Nawaz Sharif where IK is standing next to IK who at the time was PM of Pakistan.

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

Lie lie lie..... he said he can understand the emotions of karkon but they should not shut down karachi. Justice will prevail, if he is has not done anything wrong he will be out if he is accussed then he has to face it. Lolz its funny how ppl think ik doing this for musharaf. The ex cheif is strong enough to defend himself he dont need anyone. Plz correct ur facts.

Chalo D-chowk saaf kero....

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

For those who are not new to politics, Imran and NS actually know each other for a long, long time. It's hardly a breaking news. In fact, you'd never hear either men deny their long bitter sweet history. Imran as a well known cricketer and as national hero has a long history of interacting with all politicians, including Zia ul Haq.

Imran at the time was a superstar sportsman who used to stately recognition and protocol for his achievements from government of Pakistan (regardless of military or civilian). If someone wants to give such protocol the colour 'alliance' then fair to assume that he/she does not what alliance actually means.

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

You don't know me personally so please let's not pass such remarks on each other. Thanks.

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

IK does not have solid beliefs and or principles & everything he does is based on what puts him in media limelight. Right after NS was elected IK was 1st to go and congratulate him and promised to play constructive role. He commissioned his own report about why PTI lost elections & review commission blamed election loses to internal party conflict and not rigging. Btw, for last 3 years it was drone issue and protested related to that, but since the US stopped drone attacks for last 6 months...he needed something to protest about or he was in danger of fading away from media limelight. The man is clown & has nothing to offer to the country & if by miracle elected PM he would be a national disaster.

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

So how does this make IK a different politician to NS or Zardari?

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

Waise koi pakka lahori SS ko aik chamat rassed ker de to maza na a jaye!

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

A blasphemous question

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

Of course it does. You actually don't even know what your question is. Imran at the time was a* sportsman.* A nationally loved sportsman. He used to get recognised by the state of Pakistan, whether it meant getting recognised by respective government of Zia ul Haq, Benezir Bhutto or Nawaz Sharif. The simple fact you are failing to understand and perhaps won't understand either is that Imran was a nonpolitical entity who was nothing less of a celebrity. I'm surprised that someone who claims to have supported Imran doesn't know all about this!

I'm sure you would come up and say what is the difference between Shahid Afridi and Zardari and Nawaz Sharif, because Shahid Afridi the athlete has been recognised by at least two different governments, and seen greeting most popular politicians,.

Re: Live Updates of Azadi March

Zardari’s history is known to the world… and so is NS’s both are famous and hardcore criminals whereas IK does not belong to the league to serial criminal history creators :nahi:
