Lip picking

That was a really weird title, “lip picking”, but whatever.

So this is kinda embarrassing but I have a really nasty habit of picking at my lips and I do it while test taking, when I’m nervous, when I’m watching t.v., when I’m lost in my own thoughts, when I’m having an intense conversation.

How do I make it stop? I’ve tried to make a conscious effort of not doing it but it doesn’t work.

AND I WAS DOING IT RIGHT NOW TOO:crying:

Make it stop

(oh and I put this in fashion& beauty because it’s making my lips look uglier)

Re: Lip picking

how about telling people around you, such as siblings, to point it out and stop you when they see you doing it

Re: Lip picking

my cousin does the same thing. everyone is constantly pointing it out to her too. she'll stop for one minute and then start again. it's a habit she has, not just when she's stressed or lost in thought.

i used to bite my nails in the same way when i was younger and i only managed to stop because of willpower. i wanted nice nails like my friend.

personally, i'd take some drastic measures for the first few days (to get used to not subconsciously picking), like wearing gloves at home.

Re: Lip picking

I’m gonna look like an idiot wearing gloves in such warm weather. Any other alternative?!? :bummer:

And even if I wore them at home, what about when I go out? what if people call me a weirdo and throw things at me? What then, woman!

Re: Lip picking

^i said at home! apart from tying some cloth over your mouth or disabling your hands, nothing will stop finger+lip contact.

you just need to break the habit.

Re: Lip picking

why would u wear gloves?

do u pick ur lips when they r dry or all the time? I pick my lips but only when they r dry, so I try to always keep a tube of balm with me

Re: Lip picking

My sister told me to get a straight jacket (khuda na khaasta), but obviously that's not an option

Hmmm I do keep chapstick with me when I go out, but not when I'm at home...I mean it's not always around me, but that could work

Re: Lip picking

omg my aunt she has the same habit she is grnd maa but still she has dat habitt

so try to leave it asap

Re: Lip picking

well try it, every time u feel like picking at ur lips just apply the balm. Honey is also meant to be good for the lips.

Re: Lip picking

^it doesn't work. it's not like you get a 'feeling' that you want to pick your lips. it just happens when you're engrossed in something else.

you would wear gloves because you CAN'T pick your lips if your wearing them. just try it for a week, once your subconscious becomes used to not raising your hand to pick, you will be able to keep an eye on what you're doing.

Re: Lip picking

ohh I get it, I pick my lips with my teeth not the same thing I guess(past 12 clk I need to go to bed:yawn:)

My sister has had tht habit for donkey years, looks like shes tweezing her lips lol

How about always have lip gloss on your lips? Something that doesn't taste or smell that good.

Re: Lip picking

for nailbiters, there is a product they can apply on their nails that tastes gross and prevents them from putting their hand in their mouth. maybe you can use the same thing if its safe? go to your pharmacist and ask them for suggestions.

U're going to discolor u're lips Aishaaaa! They'll turn dark and ugly and plain horrible looking!

(I hope that was gory enuff to scare u!)

you are so right Gina!
I did this for years... I have stopped now but my lips are very dark now and most of lipsticks just look so horrible or different color then they should be....

Anything to undo this damage? i know its too late now but maybe some can help?

Thanks,

Sanna

I have the same habit and my husband keeps telling me to stop. I do it so much, my lips bleed sometimes :(

Re: Lip picking

i had the same habit... did it for years.. i'd do it under stress. last year i finally stopped. it takes willpower to get rid of it. chapstick didn't help much... i just got a jar of vaseline and applied it frequently, esp when my lips felt dry. the first week is the hardest, but then when ur lips start to heal and look good, u'll automatically lose the habit of picking at them.

Re: Lip picking

My aunty used to slap my hands whenever I would bite my nails in front of her.

I still bite my nails. I even liked the taste of the disgusting nail varnish my mother used to make me wear.

Not having nice nails doesnt bother me though. If I have no nails to bite, I chew hair. Im sure Freud would have something to say about these habits!

Re: Lip picking

^I slap my cousin's hand too. I doesn't do anything apart from get me evil stares.

It's all about willpower!

Like stoppit said it's all about willpower..only YOU can stop yourself. People tend to 'pick' on them when they're really dry and chapped..so always wear a lip balm. Other than that make a conscious effort not to pick on them.
