Linux distributions. .

i’m thinking of switching to one of the linux distros. .has anyone installed any linux based operating system on their PC’s. .how’s the experience. .?? is it capable enough to deal with all the functions MS windows performs. . .what about the incompatibility of windows based programs and files?? :konfused:

Re: Linux distributions. .

I have installed Linux Mint which works like a windows desktop. You can install wine which would execute exe files on your linux OS.

Re: Linux distributions. .

Why don't you install one on vmware player and try it out ?

Go with ubuntu or Linux mint. Remember to backup your stuff in case the evil monkey eats your files.:)

Re: Linux distributions. .

is it a satisfactory replacement for windows?? r u using it in a dual boot with windows or standalone?

luks pretty complicated. .will try it out. .i ws thinking more on the lines of formatting windows and installing linux in its place. .:hmmm:

i dont use this particular laptop much so no important stuff to back up. .

Re: Linux distributions. .

I m using different boot with 3 different laptops. My work laptop has windows 7 and linux mint 12 dual boot. My home one only has linux mint and my school one has windows 7, windows xp and linux mint boot. They are all working great. I dont think I have come across anything that I couldnt do with my linux mint computer that I could do with windows. If anything I think linux is better than windows (I only started using linux after changing jobs 7 months ago and had never touched linux before)

Re: Linux distributions. .

What do you think about the unity interface on the new ubuntus?

Re: Linux distributions. .

and what abt ur hardware compatibility?? esp. graphics and sound card??:konfused:
i have 1 gb ati radeon mobility graphics card and ati sound card. .:hmmm:

Re: Linux distributions. .

I dont think you would have issues with that one. Linux has issues with Nvidia graphic cards but then they have fixes for them as well. My work computer dell has the nividia graphics card and works fine after I had to download some proprietary nividia drivers.

Re: Linux distributions. .

i have the installation setup files for the latest versions of ubuntu 12.04 lts, linux mint cinnamon and fedora 17.. .:hmmm:
i guess its down to eeny meeny minie moe. .:hmmm:

Re: Linux distributions. .

^^mostly the matter of how they look....

Re: Linux distributions. .

^^thanx for the help, buddy. .:hat:i’ll try each one of them one by one and then settle for one. .:hmmm:

Re: Linux distributions. .

dude ji it depends on what are u going to use it for.. linux is kind of boring..hard to find softwares and application etc

Re: Linux distributions. .

big lebowsky. . :hmmm:

sir jii, i dont use the laptop much xcept for surfing the net and multimedia usage. .n i’ve installed ubuntu now. . n i’m loving the dektop look and feel. . .awesum. .:k: so different from windows. .lets jst c how it acts. .jst hoping for the graphics driver to perform. .:champ:

You get used to it...So yeah it's good :-)

Re: Linux distributions. .

after reading about linux and open source projects, i wish i knew programming and help the project. .:hmmm: hats off to them. .:hat:

Re: Linux distributions. .

Actually you are helping in a way by talking about the project and installing it.

Linux grows on you. I used to be a windows user through and through but after using linux and seeing the power of the terminal I m leaning toward being a linux user.

Another one we are trying these days at work is Xubuntu. Faster than the regular ubuntu without the unity interface.

Xubuntu

Re: Linux distributions. .

If you think of it as a Windows replacement you'd have a hard time. Think of it as a tool that gets your job done. You said you surf the web and some multimedia stuff. There are tons of apps available for all those tasks. Plus a lot of things are doable in just Chrome :D

Installation of application is easy with apt-get and most apps are free.

As Joel says you're already helping. Keep posting issues and successes you're having and get a meme going. I'll start posting more stuff about Ubuntu (I run it as a VM). Once you get used to it you won't miss Windows too much. Specially with the Windows 8 transition that people would have to be doing soon anyways. So, post away!

Re: Linux distributions. .

It is the simplest way to play around with operating systems. It is not difficult. It is just like installing a piece of software on windows. Just follow the on screen instructions. No need to make any decisions. In this case, Linux OS is the software that runs on another piece of software(Vmware player) that pretends to be a piece of hardware and runs on your Windows os. Give it a try. I have ubuntu, fedora, windows xp running on my windows 7. At one point i even had a old mac os too. You can have multiple os running at the same time. You can even set up file sharing, and also copy paste from some os to another. And if something goes wrong with the os you can just delete it like a file or restore a older saved version.

Re: Linux distributions. .

i’m already feeling at home with the ubuntu. .the unity dektop is very good. good riddance to windows. . i dint noe much about linux earlier, but now jst starting with it, i’m amazed to find it to be such a vast world. .:k:

the issues i had at the start were easily fixed by visiting the support forums on irc chat and the net. .issues like sound not playing, poor graphics, changing fonts in firefox, etc. .everything is fyn now and it works like a charm. .though i’m still getting used to the new filesystem heirarchy instead of the windows ‘c,d,e drive’ system. .:hmmm:
