Install all the plugins (flash, MP3 plugins, codecs etc), then Open Office, then your prefered browser (Chrome for me) and IM clients, you can get them all from the Ubuntu Software Center.

libre office was the default choice for ubuntu . .:hmmm: is open office better?

I have had some issues in the past where documents from libre wont open in MS office.

Installed Linux Mint 13 xfce yesterday on my home latop. Loving it so far.

Also installed Xubuntu on wife's laptop. No issues so far.

I have used Ubuntu , didn't like it much , switched back to Windows.

Try Linux Mint. It has a more windows like desktop.

I understand. Windows 7 is much nicer than previous versions. However I would take Linux over Windows any day.
