Similarly what Maulana Sherani and the Council of Islamic Ideology is proposing on women status could be right 1450 years ago, but today in a civilized world it is no more valid, though it is completely in accordance with the teachings of Islam. Now somebody would say that the Islam of Maulana Sherani is not the true Islam. Well, nobody has the authority to decide which Islam is the true one. And if you bring Islam in public life then you simply cannot pick and choose Islam of your choice.You will have to accept the full package. And full package is the Islam of the Barelvi,the Islam of Deobandi,the Islam of Ahle Hadis and the Islam of Shia, the Islam of the scholarly and the Islam of the mullah. As an example we see that textbooks for Shias and deduction of zakat in banks is not the same as for Sunnis. And let me also flag that all the aforementioned brands of Islam derive their strength from the same Quran and Sunnah. And now if you contend that teachings of Islam were for a particular era,this position would conflict with the concept of universality of Islam. Islam which came into existence 1450 years ago is for all times to come as we have been told.Hence,either Islam is for a particular period or it is universal. Therefore, we can safely conclude that Islam is no more practicable in the modern world as we have become much more civilized. As an example even the most religious woman in Pakistan would not accept wife battering or sharing her husband with another,though Islam permits both. Interpretations of the Quran are in thousands and thousands more will appear yet it would remain as elusive as ever. So let it be in the private domain of individuals as it cannot be modified and can never be enforced in public life. Or it will result in total chaos. By the way what is there in Islam which was not there in intellectual discourse before Islam and which is not there in conventional widom after Islam. The only solution is to separate public life from private life and let the practice of Islam remain in the private domain of each individual. This is what we need, sensible and enlightened discussion on Islam without getting too emotional, negative or defensive all the time. The writer raises a very valid point here. No ghairatmand woman in this day and age would accept sharing her husband with another woman or beating (however light!) by him, even though both 'allowed' in Islam. Some aspects are certainly not practicable in the 21st century such as I am not against capital punishment (for crimes such as murder and terrorism) but have similar reservations about the practice of beheading in this day and age.

Christian countries by and large have been there done that. Thats why there is a separation of church and state. This is why muslims are flocking to these countries. There is a good reason for that.
The question should not be posed to mullah's of the country, in the first place. 'Beating' anyone is a matter of personal safety that 'laws of land' should guarantee. This includes children, wives, husbands, elderly, students, teachers, police, janitors, minority, majority, even the mullahs we despise - everyone.

If true, the man needs to seriously look at what this 'naya Pakistan' actually will be like if these Mullah's get to make the laws.

Point raised by MOSTAR95 is very valid and need correct explaination about universality of islam. It need mature discussion not emotional or I am sure there will be many who will put him/us on the list of blasphamy for questioning the universality of Islam. I dont find myself very much in a position for clear out this issue from my mind but from my heart I am very clear about universality of islam.
It has very much to do with the word of Quran and its expaination from the life of prophet PBUH. as his life is actually the explaination of what is given in Quran.

This thing what CII said, is meant to be a LAW... not teaching for husbands.
AS in if women come in police station.. and say "my hubby grab my cell phone and send I hate you message to my mother"
or "my husband pushed me .. " Police would say.... "can not help you here"
It does not mean... such couple should not seek counseling.. advice.. help from family.

When first one among my friends read quran cover to cover... in our 20s... one verse he mentioned.. was this one.
In ..sort of shock.
But if you really look closely the procession of things.. and what follows..
it most probably means... if she does not stop.. confront her firmness..
like stop talking... then stop sleeping with her... if she did not stop... go home... sit on the table.. and stop her from what ever she is doing..
and say... "WHAT THE @#$ $##$ ....You are such a trash bag... why the hell I married you.. I should have listern to my mother."
is she still do not stop... call your family and her family.... etc....
