so first question is lcd or plasma?
second, what to look for?
experiences with particular brands, ranging from teh sony and LGs on one end of teh spectrum to the westnhouse and vizios of the world on the other end.
yeah I am looking to buy one, actually two and need to shortlist some.
comes down to size and afforability. plasmas are good after 34inches but it'll take more than a tax rebate to buy something nice. dont worry about the 1080/720i/p garbage unless you want something huge - you wont notice the difference on anything less than a 36 with your ass on a couch. also dont buy a sony just caus its sony. their screens are made by sharp and sharp has cheaper units.
because you're a zillionaire id suggest you get a few pioneer elites. mmmm... elites.
i am not really into tvs that much so don’t know a lot of details…i recently bought a Sony Bravia XBR4 52"…i like the website below for reviews…and this Sony is the best they have tested in LCD tvs.
Do not buy Westinghouse......even though their LCD Screen is supposedly made by Sony.................bought 32"........did not last 13 months.........:(
I can't believe you, of all people X2, is asking this question.
You and TLK are like the knowledgebase for electronics and cars!!!!
no no really, cars are one thing, televisions are another.
I have 2 televisions in the house
one is a 25 inch zenith I bought for 200 bucks in 1997 just as a temp TV, it refuses to die, its currently in the bedroom
the other Tv is a flat screen (not a flat panel) 37 inch JVC which is the size of a small fridge..heavy as hell.
of every single person that I know in US, I am the only person who did nto even get one of them nicer projection TVs.
my view is that as long as it is working, it is working, but under threats from beum i am going to get new TVs.
i want a 47" but sigh begum has a Tvbstand she likes which can only house a 42" so living room will be a 42", bedroom I dunno..37-40" maybe..its not like I get anytime to watch anything on either TV anyways.
LCD:
- Better / Longer Life
- Sharper image at higher angles (Plasma fades as you move away from center)
- Cheaper (usually)
Plasma:
- Better preview of "black" color than LCD (v.minor issue with new TVs though)
- Crispier MOVING images
I agree do not pay insanly high amount for 1080p , but do try to get 1080.
DON'T get Sony. Too many recalls on them.
Apparently SHARP is the BEST to get, because they are the only one that assemble their TV all by themselves (and not get parts from different manf and put it together and call it Sony) :)
Although SONY LCD lineup has some hiccups, they are generally known for having (at least) decent quality. Sony DOES NOT make Plasma - this should tell you somefin about Plasma technology reliability.
Features to look for:
- Most of the time you will need to stretch the picture one way or another to fit into TV (most big screen are widescreen of different ratio than TV / DVD signal). Big brand name does AMAZING job of stretching image to fit TV , yet things will not be stretched / cut off from screen. Sharp seems to have "BESTEST" implementation (better than Panasonic and Sony as well).
There is a Sharp propriety method of stretching called "S.Stretch" and it fits anything on the screen and keeping things in persepective.
I have a 52" SHARP LCD and I have to tell you I am more than happy with it!

1) LCD screens DO NOT have longer life. Infact you are more likely to have CCFL failure (down to inverter) than phosphur or Xenon failing in plasma screens.
2) Plasma and LCD both have individually "printed" pixels. How is one sharper than the other when from a geometric perspective both are perfect.
3) Plasma screens do not have worse viewing angles. The reality is LCD screens have worse viewing angles. This is down to the inherit polarisation of light LCD's rely on. Plasma just like CRT illuminates phosphur coating on each pixel.
4) LCD's are only cheaper in smaller sizes. As they get larger Plasma offers better value.
Plasma:
- Better preview of "black" color than LCD (v.minor issue with new TVs though)
I'm not to sure what you are trying to say, but plasma screens have MUCH better blacks. Every black we see is inf act a grey. The darker the grey the better all other colours will look, bigger colour gaument. In this category plasma totally wipes the floor with LCD's; an order of magnitude better.

Sharp are not the only manufacturer. The crown of production numbers, and reliance on your own LCD's goes to Samsung and LG. Both produce their own panels including all the electronics.
Plasma is superior to LCD where image quality is concerned and believe it or not reliability. Sony fooked up, they didnt even make their own panels a few years back. If I was to go by your absurd analysis of the market just look at Pioneer. They are the enthusiasts AV equipment maker, and only produce plasma screens.

1) Plasma
2) Contrast ratio, resolution, connectivity
3) Pioneer produce the best quality screens. Look for the "kuro" range - very pricey. If I was going to buy a screen right now it would be the Panasonic TH-PX4280. If you need 1080p look at the PZ series.
