Pakistan wicket-keeper Rashid Latif has been reported by the Australian board to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for what is believed to be a racial slur, an ICC spokesman said on Wednesday.

Latif played in Tuesday’s World Cup Group A defeat by the world champions, top-scoring for his side with an innings of 33 during which he was reportedly involved in an altercation with Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist.

The matter will be reviewed by ICC match referee Clive Lloyd at a hearing in Johannesburg starting at 1100 GMT.

The 34-year-old Latif has played 34 Test matches and 144 one-day internationals since making his Pakistan debut in 1992.

Australia batsman Darren Lehmann was suspended for five matches last month after making a racist comment in his team’s dressing room during a match against Sri Lanka.

The final game of Lehmann’s ban was Tuesday’s opening World Cup victory over Pakistan, and he will be available for Saturday’s match against India.

So this was going on when during the match Gilchrist walked over to the umpire and said something and Rashid was also involved.

this is bad....

we cant afford to loose Latif...

Btw what happened....I did'nt see wnything wrong in the match

Well he's got only himself to blame - after what happened to lehmann he should know better. Could be serious. Ih he gets suspended can we replace him? It will porbably be Akmal brought in as Moin hasn't played for a long time.

I jjust watched the incident on TV. Rashid said something, was not clear even though he was not looking at Gilchrist. I only heard the word white. Gilchrist came up to him and said what was that? and then walked over to the umpire and complained. Next ball again something was said and Gilchrist said I have already reported you to the umpire for racial abuse.

Let's see what happens.

Watch this space.

If Rashid has said something silly then he should face the consequences, there was no need for that espeically after the Lehman incident.

Why are the Aussies getting a fire in their behinds...they do it to other teams, why get angry if someone does it to them.

Well because Lehmann has been banned and Warne has just been sent home so they are pretty worked up and wont let anyone lese get away with it. Anyway Rashid should have known better, that is if it is correct.

umm Rashid Latif is a very quite and calm character Unlike Lehmann.
I hope its nothing and he is exenorated.

yeah, i think they want to prove that we Are Not hte only one who are like that.... and Glichrist might have picked something 'white'. Who knows it may be balll or discoloured... Khair lets hope its nothing.

Australia is known for his trash talk on the field. Quite unbelievable that they do report such incidents.

You can not compare what Lehman did in the presence of Sri Lankans in the dressing room to what Latif said to an annoying blabbering keeper in the middle of a run-chase.

This is a laughable matter to say the least.

This is what BBC reported. I hope the link works…

Audio report

Thats fair enough, Rashid cannot speak English and jo bhi kaha hoga woh urdu main hee kaha hoga. Khair lets see, Aussies wont let them get away i think. I hope the worst :(. RAshid is a decent quite character as you all know.. but lets see…

I hope that we don't lose Rashid over this. He batted well yesterday and watching Dravid fluff a starightforward catch in today's match it shows how important it is to have a specialist keeper.

**Rashid Latif Cleared

Pakistan wicketkeeper Rashid Latif has been cleared of a charge that he made a racist comment towards Australia’s Adam Gilchrist, according to his team manager.
Latif was reported to the International Cricket Council for racist abuse during Pakistan’s defeat by Australia.

But Pakistan manager Shaharyar Khan said after emerging from an ICC hearing on Wednesday that Latif had not been punished.

“Rashid Latif has been completely cleared from any wrongdoing he was charged with,” said Khan.

“He has said he has the highest regard for Adam Gilchrist as a person.”

Latif was alleged to have subjected fellow wicketkeeper Gilchrist to a racial insult in Tuesday’s Group A match.

Gilchrist informed his team management about the remark who, in turn, reported the matter to the ICC’s match referee Clive Lloyd.

After the game, Lloyd summoned the two players and their team managers for a hearing.

Lloyd was also the match referee who handed Australia’s Darren Lehmann a five-match suspension for a racial remark against Sri Lanka last month.

Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
I m sure most pakistanis are relieved. :k:

Alhamdolillah

Good :k:

Great :k:

waisay, dunno why you would want to use racial slurs for someone like Gilchrist. He’s got ears the size of satellite dishes why not target those?

well, i think yesterday when Gilly said to rashid that i have reported you or something of that sort ,Rashid got berzerk and spanked a few sixes.

Xtreme, i think its more like Aussie plan to reduce eht intensity about lehmann incident by blaiming others…

If Rashid's been cleared then was Gilchrist lying? He should be suspended if thats the case.

Typical aussie whining.

they cant take the heat..they are the worlds best sledgers but dont have the guts to take some back.

Im not a fan of Latif but he was clearly not in the wrong...I hope he gives them hell the next time we play.

**Pakistan’s Latif cleared of racism, will sue Gilchrist

Pakistan wicket-keeper Rashid Latif says he will sue Adam Gilchrist for defamation of character after being cleared of making a racist remark to the Australian player during yesterday’s cricket World Cup match.

At a hearing in Johannesburg, match referee Clive Lloyd said there was insufficient evidence to substantiate Gilchrist’s allegation. Lloyd had watched videos of the incident.

The 34-year-old Latif, who has played 34 Test matches and 144 one-day internationals, said he’ll take legal action after consulting the Pakistan Cricket Board.

I’m going to take him to court because he has ruined my image," Latif said in an interview. “My reputation in cricket is good and, since I’m retiring after the World Cup, I’m very worried about what happened last night.”

Gilchrist clashed with Latif on several occasions during the match at Wanderers stadium and could be heard asking whether the Pakistan player had made a racial slur. He approached umpire David Shepherd to report the matter.

“I was shocked by a comment I believed I heard yesterday,” Gilchrist said after today’s hearing. “I was upset at the time. I wouldn’t have raised the issue if there was not an offence.”

Gilchrist, speaking before Latif’s threat to sue, said he has a “fantastic relationship on and off the field” with him.

“We’ve shaken hands and I’m happy to say the issue is closed, and I’m confident there’ll be no future problems in matches against Pakistan,” he said.

Latif accused the Australians of trying to damage his reputation because he was the person who accused Shane Warne and Mark Waugh of corruption in 1995. Waugh and Warne were later fined for taking payments from bookmakers in return for match information.

“Me and Adam are still friends but he hurt me a lot and I must clear my name,” Latif said. “I have always played for Pakistan with great dignity throughout my career.”

The ruling means Latif, the only specialist wicketkeeper in Pakistan’s squad, is free to play in Sunday’s match against Namibia. Australia won yesterday’s match by 82 runs.

Australia batsman Darren Lehmann received a five-match ban for making a racist remark against Sri Lanka last month. Lehmann was the first player to be suspended under the sport’s racial vilification laws. Lloyd was referee at that match.

“It would have been a terrible thing for me to have lived with the stigma of being branded a racist,” Latif said.

Looking at his past record, I bet Rashid can do it. I am with him but he should do it after the world cup is over.

It must have been a sight to Adam glichrist running like a child to his mommy (umpire) to report the issue. I just wonder why these australians start crying everytime someone says something to them and when they do it they call it mental disintegration .
