With today’s release of the Windows Vista February CTP (Community Technology Preview), Microsoft has publicly passed a key milestone on the road to launching its new operating system. This release of Vista is “feature-complete”, the company says, meaning that all of the fundamental capabilities that Vista will eventually offer are now baked in. Development efforts aren’t slowing—the user experience will continue to evolve, bugs will get fixed, performance and compatibility will improve—but the basic shape of the operating system has been solidified, and from here on out we expect to see mostly fine-tuning rather than wholesale changes. Yeah I installed it on one of my test machines and I think it service pack three of XP with MS plus on it. Nothin special. Yeah RC-1 of Office 2007 is amzing
I think that the majority of all pc-users will choose Vista! I don´t know why, but not many people changed the OS to linux or else, despite knowing the dangers!
I think, me 2...The GUI looks so awesome and I can give my computer the security by myself
But you can make it secure and stable...it depends on the user to 85 %...He is the one who is running the system and takes nearly all the responsibility for crashes...I mean MS has certainly learned that they can´t provide a buggy OS which crashes with every mouse click!!!
Since I have XP ond my Computer I never had any big problems...All the faults which occured were mine...I am looking forward for this release...
But be aware of the fact that you need a (very) good computer, not an old machine ;)
Feels quite nostalgic isn’t it? When Whistler (WinXP Beta) leaked out, we heard similar comments; “XP is just a makeover of 2000” and “I am smart and I will never switch to XP”. 5 years latter EVERYONE uses XP. Similarly, few years down the line ALL the new stuff would be Vista Compatible; so like it or hate it; you have to use it.It might be hard for some people to chew on this; but, Microsoft is actually doing a much better job with Vista. Will the Intel based MacOSX kill Windows; only time can tell, but i wont hold my breath to it, there are lots of factors not just the price element. Too many people are used to a particular environment, its hard for non-techies (ordinary Jane and Joe) to switch to another OS when all thier software requirements are already meeting with another. Losts of everyday software needs to be available for the end-user to make a switching decision.
But now, since x86 platform is introduced to Mac world, the prices have suddenly plunged - enabling home-users to switch.
Also note: That OS 10, is unix based - which is going to grab alot of linux based community. I do not see a good future for Windows.
Thats not true actually. Linux has had GUI for a long time now and in different flavours. The price of Macs have come down a lot in the last decade and in recent years you could easily have found a Mac with a price comparable to a similarly spec PC. The market share for both tells you the story. Even with Apple introducing cheaper and better machines, their market share has declined compared to Windows based PC in recent years.
The real advantage of Windows and why it is so popular is its application base. Mac may have better applications while Linux based PCs may have better security, but the shear number and variety of application base available for Windows will not let it come down from the top spot for a long time to come. For a home user, SOHO user there is no better value than a Windows based PC.
On the contrary to quoted message above, if Microsoft is able to come up with a secure and better operating system, it will surely sound choir bells for Macs. For the time being, I don't think these OSs are going anywhere else from where they are right now. IMHO...
By reference to GUI i meant "User friendly GUI". As far as prices go for macs compared to PC, Macs have been 3x more expensive. Primary reason for Mac to swtich to Intel Chipset was performace, which *'motorola?' *was unable to fulfill. MACs G5 were carrying processors that started from 1.8 GHZ to 2.2 GHZ MAX and priced well over $3000 for a crappy machine.
Yes, mac did lack software - but with the new unix kernal thats going to change. Now Mac has both Mac Software License and Plenty of Software from Unix Based development community.
