I’m considering getting laser eye surgery done. My eye sight is quite poor (due to reading loads of books) and I’m tired of wearing contacts all the time.
Has anybody got it done? Do you know of any side affects?

i want this done too.
I've heard, through documentries and various bits of advertising through my letterbox- that sometimes instead of making the sight better, it can make it permenantly worse.(very rare though)
and after a couple of years people may become slightly long sighted.
But the later is a side-effect that is worth it I think.
hiccup she wants to get rid of the glasses not have r eye sight hanged from short to long or long to long ![]()
one of my relatives had it doen some time back… i havent heard of her having problems so far but as with any operation there is risk specially when u r talking about eyes :o
I really want this done too but am also scared of the risks, however small. I'm waiting for someone I know to take the plunge and have it done first before I go ahead.

Same here!
Also one of my dad's friend got his done in Islamabad about a year ago. It's cheaper there (compared to Europe)
Does anyone have information about the prices? (both Pakistan and Europe/US)
:)
I know of 2 people that have had it done. One friend had it done about 5 or 6 years ago. It was fine until recently, his eyesight has become very weak again and is wearing glasses. The other friend had it done 2 years ago, and he's doing well with no problems.
DONT DO IT!! Its gona get worst in long term!
Just get glasses. And keep the contacts for special events.
I wear glasses at home and contacts when I leave the house. :) It's just getting annoying ..... having to wear contacts/glasses all the time.
i reckon glasses are very appleaing....
a friend of mine had it done last year.. and shes loving it.. shes had really bad eye sight since she was like 5..

Thats what i meant. Wear glasses more often. Keep contacts for times like parties or events. You dont really need to drag yourself around in contacts to school or work.
I spent three years on just contacts. Finally got sick of them. Like really really sick. Glasses are such a relief.
I was getting sick of my contacts too so I decided to get a nice pair of glasses that I wouldn't mind wearing outside of home, so I spent 400 bucks on these frames, and well of course, I still never wear 'em outside. If you see me wearing my glasses just know i'm either super tired or in a bad mood cuz then I didn't have the energy to stick my contacts in.
As far as laser surgery is concerned, there isn't enough research on how good they prove to be in the long run. It's like Fret mentioned his friend who's had it for a few years and now is having problems again, I have heard of many such cases too.
ive noticed females have a complex with wearing glasses outside of their house...
my bro's like u chee.. he was wearing contacts for a few years.. went to pakistan.. got sick of his contacts getting dirty.. and since then hes only been wearing a glasses.. it could also be because people stopped him everywhere to compliment him on his frames... men!
Laser surgery has a 95% chance or working sucessfully with no side-effects.
But that means it goes wrong in 5% of cases.
That means one out of 20 people get problems after having laser eye surgery.
Those odds are too worrisome for me... I was planning on getting it done, but 1 in 20 scares me too much. I'd rather stick with my glasses.
Trust me dont get em, as i use to work for one! THE LASER EYE CLINIC. Stick with glasses or contacts :)
I have laser surgery performed on my eyez. 2 of my younger sisters have also had laser surgery performed.
We got it done here in Dubai from a private clinic - Al Zahra private clinic - Sh. Zayed Highway. The doctor was a pakistani doctor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan who is a very famous personality both in Pak & Dubai. He is highly respected in his field.
He recommended my parents that we should get it done after da age of 21. This is da age when ur eye lens stop growing. Me & my sisters had no problems & we went ahead with da surgery.
The procedure is painless & takes about 5 minutes 4 each eye. Although da entire operation took half an hour - from da moment that anaesthesia(hope I got da spelling rite) was applied to my eyez till the point when the doc put a new pair of lens on my eyez.
The nurse applied anaesthesia 2 my eyez & after 10 minutes I was under a huge high tech laser unit ready 4 surgery. 1st da doc "scratched" my eye 2 remove the coating of my eyeball, with a tool. With utmost precision he pointed the laser @ my eye & started "shooting" da laser. It was not painful @ all. It turned totally dark after da last laser shot my eye. Then da doc applied some medicinal drops & it was like magic, everything turned sharp & clear. The last step was placing a contact lens on my eye 2 cover my scratched retina. The same procedure was performed 4 my 2nd eye.
I was asked 2 rest 4 a week. My 1st appointment was after 3 days 2 remove the lens. During these 3 days, da eyez feel itchy but u r not allowed 2 touch them. U can start watching television after a week, although I started after a month as an Xtra precaution. I was asked 2 wear sunglasses becoz da sun rays in Dubai r quite stronger than those in da west or east. I got laser sugery performed in 1999 & ever since I've had no problems. I take my precautions against the sun & Xcessive TV, & there have been no problems with me or with my 2 sisters Alhamdulillah.
Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan performs a comprehensive check up of the eye be4 giving a go ahead 4 an operation. He has a lot of credit & performs operations both in Pak & Dubai.
Statistics r a bunch of crap. Visit a highly qualified eye surgeon & let him perform an eye check on u & let him give u da right recommendation. 4 ppl have come up 2 me in my organization & asked me about da pros & cons of laser surgery. After recommending them this doc they went ahead & performed laser surgery from this same doctor. 2 months back a senior manager also asked me da addie of this doc & da pros & cons. He is an Irisher & he is very happy after da operation & seems 2 like pakis a lot after this surgery.
There u go, based on my personal Xperience, I would say u go get a check up from an Xpert be4 going 4 a laser surgery. There r no side effects & it does not worsen with age.
Thanks mal1k and the rest of you for your responses.
Personally, I don't think I could get any type of surgery done on my eyes with me being conscious of what was occuring the entire time. I learned that after my traumatic wisdom teeth experience.
For now I think I will stick to contacts.
Sadzzz, I wore glasses throughout high school and had no problem with it. I think it has to do with vanity .... i'm too vain to wear glasses at this point in my life. Plus, it's a pain when you drive and have to look out of the side of your eyes ... the glasses don't go that far. :)
I had a detached retina a couple years ago which coulda led to blindness of that eye so I had to have surgery the same day on my eye and it was more then just lasers, they actually sliced my eyeball open, put some silicon buckle inside to squeeze my eye back onto the retina, then they used lasers to "freeze" the retina to the eye again, and after all that, they stiched my eyeball shut. This "squeezing" of my eye made my vision which was already bad to an even worser prescription.
I asked my eye doctor if I could get the laser corrective surgery done even after that crazy surgery and suprisingly he said yes, but you still have to get a checkup from a good doctor to see if your qualified for the laser surgery. Apparently people whos eyes are a certain shape usually dont fair well with laser and people with dry eyes usually cant have laser surgery done either. Thats all I know about it though. I want to get it done so I can throw my glasses and contacts away, but after reading the side effects, it kinda scares me. Some people might see "halos" around everything that makes light, from car lights to stars to house lights and this will never go away. I had that halo effect from my retina surgery and it was freaky and annoying but it went away cuz it was only from my drops, but if you had that from laser surgery and you couldnt get rid of that, your in for a life of misery!!!!!
I wish there was a lot more positive response. :-\
I remember that all the Mounties were barred from getting laser surgeries since it could hamper night-vision. If you are thinking about getting a flight license, you may not be able to pass the medical exam..so do the research and make sure that it does not screw up your career in one way or another..
