well one aspect is that engagement is not that strong a relation like marriage. And if the couples are allowed free contact, then there is a possibility of larai n jhagray, but once they're married both partners are willing to compromise. In Pakistan, where on one hand contacting like this help develop a relation then on the other hand it damages the relation which is not even permanent ( nikah ) yet.
