To all those who are defending the Lal Masjid Mullah by claiming that he only wants those CDs removed that are erotic/vulgar in nature: You are missing the point. Lal Masjid is engaging in vigilantism, which can break apart the order in any society, and regardless of what you say, we do have some in Pakistan at this time. If he considers these CDs a problem, he should take the approach of petitioning the government authorities and preaching to the consumers, but not by destryoing people's businesses. Yeah, it may take longer to resolve any illegal activities through petitioning, but just because the right way is harder doesn't mean you should adopt violent means, otherwise, what kind of 'Religion of Peace' is it?

My concern is less with their ends (banning sale of CDs they consider vulgar) and more with their means. Many of our conservative/religious guppies keep defending these Lal Masjid Mullahs because of their 'perceived' association with Islam, but I am afraid if we legitimize the tactics and the means adopted by Lal Masjid, how long before every sect, ethnic and even religious group starts trying to achieve their goals through similar violent threats and intimidation. Isn't that a recipe for anarchy and civil war?

you are on the right track here. you'll find most defenders of lal masjid are really against the profanity used against it. just check back to post#1. it shows those who want action against lal masjid want to do it for other reasons rather then the issues at hand. i totoally agree petitioning is the way to go. the government must improve law and order including some of the points raised by lal masjid.

They dont have any authority

For them to do this is challenging the government it self.

Look at USA. In 1957, the Governor of Arkansas opposed the President of letting black kids go to an all white school.

The President send the 101st Air borne Division and ended this mess.

This is the kind of action we need.

The public is behind Musharraf if Musharraf acts with force against these brainwashed unper jihail people.

Dont know why Musharraf doesnt act agaisnt these people.

People can say what they want abt US leaders, but when the nation needs actions to firm up national interest they act. I say this as a student of US history at the university level.

We need such men in Pakistan.

He said the vices are on the rise… Oh my god! Allah save us from CD’s and Music…
If these Mullahs arent badmash …, I dont know who is!

I would hate to visit a Pakistan where there is no music.. One of the best things about Pakistan is the music, and I would hate to visit a nation where its banned by relgious *******s… I hope someone has the courage to kill these people.

Lal Masjid gears up for attack on CD, video shops: Taliban jihad in NWFP backed

ISLAMABAD, May 25: The Lal Masjid administration on Friday announced that its students would attack audio and video shops, massage centres and brothels in Islamabad if their owners did not wind up their businesses immediately.

“Our students can attack these outlets anytime because the deadline given to their owners had already passed,” Lal Masjid khatib Maulana Abdul Aziz said in his Friday sermon.

The deadline ended last month and the owners fear attacks from the mosque brigade anytime. “We are insecure and need government protection,” the owner of a CD shop in Abpara market told Dawn.

He said that a group of 40 to 50 baton-wielding people, some of them covering their faces, had visited different markets two months ago and asked owners of CD, audio and video shops to switch over to other business.

The CD shop-owner said he had been in the business for 30 years and had no expertise to start another business.

When contacted, Maulana Abdul Rashid Ghazi, deputy in-charge of Lal Masjid, said the one-month ultimatum had ended last month, adding that owners of some of the shops had assured that they would wind up their business.

Two months ago some people went to various markets in the capital and issued notices, signed by slain Taliban leader Mullah Dadullah, to owners of CD and audio/video shops, asking them to wind up their businesses.

However, Maulana Ghazi denied that those who had distributed the notices were students or supporters of Lal Masjid.

Our Correspondent in Kohat adds: In a telephonic address on the occasion of the inauguration of the basement of a mosque in Kohat, Maulana Abdul Aziz of Lal Masjid asked the Taliban to continue their jihad against obscenity, prostitution, video shops and other social vices and expand it to every nook and corner of the NWFP.

He said the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal secured votes in the name of Islam and Quran but failed to enforce Sharia and curb un-Islamic practices.

“Therefore, it is now the responsibility of all believers to support the activities of the Taliban in the province against CD shops and obscenity.”

He advised the Taliban to also help the weak and helpless segments of society in getting justice. He said the government would have to enforce Islam soon because they could not stop the movement of the Taliban which had got the support of millions of people. “People are fed up with the rulers and want immediate change for which time is ripe.”

He regretted that the MMA government had got involved in purely political matters which resulted in social degradation. “The sale of drugs and liquor has increased and dancing, prostitution and music are on the rise in the NWFP which is being ruled by graduates of seminaries,” he added.

He said: “We have set the example of enforcing Sharia in Islamabad and, therefore, the MMA government cannot justify its inaction this regard.”

^appropriate is with consideration to intent, laws broken and severity. this isnt everyones chance to kick a mullah for fun.

lal masjid suffer same problem as everyone else in pakistan, if their not listenned to.... they'll be trouble.
