yeah I am in Islamabad and I just lorve Mr. Ghazi for uprooting the filth from the society...so does every other person I've met. He's so popular we might even elect him as our MNA next time.
Looks like government is all set to finish it once in for all. Jung is reporting buildup of Rangers and Police in large numbers around LAL MASJID area. I hope it dont get bloody like WACO although the fanatics in LAL MASJID are no less crazy.
^^ I do not think somethingwill be done in this build up as if Govt wants to take an action t will(or should) do it in a swift manner and not like this.
some amount of moral upkeeping reform is needed in pakistan. a strong police and a stable government
we are neither saudi nor are we afghanistan, the future is for us to decide. to agree on a stable vision and to implement it. a chance for pakistan to guide others.
the threat to a stable pakistan in the longterm is not lalmasjid but liberal extremists. who make progress and agreement on timeserved morals difficult. who shout hard everytime a law or philosophy favourable to islam is mentioned.
i offer my respect to the people who conclude brothels and other plain wrongs are to blame for the current lalmasjid campaign
Right... So allowing armed vigalantes to take to the streets and impliment their own brand of justice is bringing stability to the society!!!!!!!!!
Let me ask you this, when was the last time a liberal extremist blew himself up outside a girls school? When was the last time a liberal extremist beat up a couple for appearing in public? When was the last time a liberal extremist blew up a cd shop? When was the last time a liberal extremist murdered a female politician or health worker or teacher? When was the last time liberal extremists went around smearing paint over billboards with pictures of women (just faces, nothing sexual about that).
Point is, there are no Liberal "extrmists." The relgious fantics see anyone with even a slight bit of tolerance as being liberal... If they take that tolerance to the next level, which is acceptance, then they are "extremists."
In Pakistan, no one supports brothels, but neither does anyone with even an iota of sense support relgious fantics... The basic reason is that religous fantics dont know where to draw the line... They are capableof all kinds of evils and there is no controling them.
PP we agree alot, we are both advocates of liberal democracy and a curtailing of Islamist influence in our beloved motherland. We must accept Sir that we seem to be in a minority however.
Exactly… Why concern yourself with people who WANT to shoot themselves in the head… If there are any liberal voices left, perhaps they should make themselves heard. Unfortunately, most Pakistanis seem preoccupied with just getting by these days.. But it would be interesting to see how people react when the fanatics start targeting the general populus.
Not really, for all its merits, most just dont support the extreme secular view… Im relatively satisfied with an Islamic country that is at the very least, tolerant, and has the foresight to see things logicaly.
your loyalty is with country or with liberal elements of the country?
Its loyalty to the country that people support liberal elemants... Because the extremists will turn the country into another Afghanistan. The liberals would simply want people to have RIGHTS as human beings! Not be subject to the whims of some Dho taka ka Maulvi.

That would be a start. But the key to sustaining tolerance would be weaning people away from soley Islamist education. We need a strong state, a moderating influence.
Cap,
As PP noted, my loyalty to Pakistan is absolute. Its for that reason that I could not stand to see it become an Islamists cesspool devoid of liberty and the pursuit of personal happiness. A blackhole sucking in freedoms and the zest of a people.

The other-side spin would be that we don't support people who would turn the country into a whore.
"Loyalty" to your country should be free from who takes over. I have always been anti-Musharraf but that never takes away my loyalty to Pakistan... are you confusing 'loyalty to country' with 'loyalty to government'?
Liberalism is not akin to whorism. Its the freedom to choose.
But thats what the liberal govt did in Bhutto's time. NS/BB govt's in 90s were not as 'liberal' as one would think, they had alliances with the mullahs.
There was little liberal about NS. He wanted to impose Sharia law as legal standard!
Exactly, and even BB govt had alliance with the nation's darling Maulana Diesel Khan. So to hope for a 'liberal-only' govt is just a false hope, all govts will have to listen to the 'mullahs', you can't run away from that... thanks to Russia's invasion of Afghanistan.
