I think it's an Indian tradition. I have no clue though why red in particular. I think the bride should be able to wear whatever colour she wants...but not black or fuscia pink or any bright neon colours!
I never did like that red color on a bride, it just seems soooo out there. Also Arabs, Turks, Persians and Afghans wear white on their wedding day and I do not like that either.....
One thing - if it's an Indian tradition so it's ok to give it up, would you want to give up all the other rasams as well coz I've noticed girls are really into all the rest of the stuff.

There are traditions with all sorts of people, I would'nt mind giving them all up, I mean the whole wedding things.
I agree with you Mr Xtreme, soo many girls are soo wrapped up with the whole wedding things.
Red is traditionally a color for the brides not exclusively. I have seen brides wear off white, green, pink etc. Though come to think of it, I haven’t seen a bride in black. :D

Who said anything about giving up the tradition of wearing red? I look great in red and will most definitely wear red on my wedding day, just like my mother did on hers!
bhaee married honay kay baghair bhee to bridal dress pehna jaa sakta hai. Lekin larkiyaaN maantee hee nahi. Pata nahi kiya shauq hota hai inheiN har kaam "proper channel" say karnay ka.
First of all, these days, brides are wearing all kinds of colors in Pakistan... gold, green, blue etc etc. So its no more that red has some kinda monopoly over this. Not anymore.
Second, red is a bright color, which makes the bride stand out and look pretty, as this is her special day. I guess thats why, it's en vogue in India and Pakistan.
In West, presumably white is a sign of purity and innocence (brides), while black is the sign of sadness and grief (funerals).
But if you don't like wearing red on your wedding day, you won't be doing anything totally new. Many girls are already on the same band-wagon.
^ sure they can.. guyz can wear some nice sherwani in red colour and gold embroidery ( just lightly) with white pajama .. :) with the gold pagri ..the traditional style.. ofcourse this look is for only some guyz.. wont suit every one.
i was thinking of making some other colour ..but i guess i will keep it traditional as well.. blood red with nice light kaam on it.. nothing heavy. and less makeup! i hate the way they just paint their faces ..looks so horrible..plus dulhan itnee thakee hoee lagti hai.
