Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs

Daily Times - Leading News Resource of Pakistan

Lahore High court has deemed songs by Naseebo Lal and Nooran Lal as “vulgar” and has banned them from singing them. A search on youtube for Naseebo Lal shows many great love songs. My command of Punjabi language is not that great any more but I can’t find anything remotely objectionable in her songs. What is vulgar about this song, for example? What kind of censorship is this? Why is high court involved in this kind of censorship? They courts had similarly banned a song by Abrarul Haq a while back. Don’t they have important criminal and legal cases to rule on?

Can people shed any light on what is going on here?

Re: Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs

to be fair, some of the songs ARE very expressive if not outright vulger. for reference, see any recent punjabi stage show and you'll see what is meant.

As for Lahore High Court issuing the order, yeah it should focus on other important things and let this rest somewhere down the list. It might be possible, this is politicizing of music industry and the ban maybe lifted later. who knows...

Re: Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs

vulgar as in how??
crude language, suggstive? what is there

Re: Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs

well...not crude language. there are no bad words lolz

but very suggestive though.

and not all either, some are. there are some songs of her which are also considered very nice. so...it's a tough call.

Re: Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs

So, you think it is not the songs themselves but the way they are performed that is "vulgar"? Then why not ban the performace? Wait, I think I had read that Lahore high court had recently banned dances on stage performances in Lahore, also declaring them "vulgar".

Which songs are specifically banned? I beleive there are close to fifity of them.

Re: Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs

^i think it's both the lyrics and the performances. gone are the days when there was decent music, and much of what you find playing in the buses/inter-city pvt transport is not suitable. (especially in lahore/punjab)

if the song contains suggestive lyrics, the performance industry will just play on that because it's the new "hot thing" and "trend"....

ying-yang, both co-exist cuz of each other. the exact number of songs banned? no clue.

i think the music industry needs a censoring committee that handles this kinda thing before it is even released to public.

But why not let the public self-censor by not listening to anything that deem vulgar.

Hope they were PCO judges, otherwise, what the point of anything ....

Re: Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs

I think all suggestive songs should be banned ... whats the point of spreading all this vulgarity in a muslim country... if they do want to write songs , let the writers be creative and show us proper poetry rather then throwing all this vulgarity out way... imagine I was once driving with my dad and two other uncles .. and one of her really vulgar songs started playing on the radio and it was a horrible situation to be in ....

Re: Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs

^^ LOL. You may be joking but read the highlighted portion of the arguements in the court, you are not far off!

High Court imposed ban on ‘immoral songs’

**On 27 April 2009 the Lahore High Court imposed a ban on songs by the two Lahore singers Naseebo Lal and Nooro Lal, deeming them ‘indecent, immoral’ and ‘against the values of a Muslim society’, reported The News International.
**According to the newspaper, justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry also issued notices to the two singers to appear before the court on 25 May 2009. The judge issued this order on a petition filed by advocate Asif Mehmood Khan. The petitioner had submitted that the departments concerned and the ‘criminal elements’ were violating the law and the Constitution as well as ‘spoiling the morality of the people’.

He said the respondent singers, Naseebo Lal and Nooro Lal, were composing and singing indecent and immoral songs with the help of other respondents. He argued that the protection given by the government to these singers under the Motion Pictures Ordinance of 1979 was illegal and against the values of a Muslim society.

Legal argumentation
The petitioner pleaded that the impugned certification passed by the chairman and secretary of the Central Board of Film Censors was illegal, void ab initio and against the principles of natural justice, and also violated his fundamental rights.
Asif Mehmood Khan handed over to the court video CDs and audio cassettes of the socalled indecent songs sung by the singers. He pleaded that the certification and exhibition of these songs was against the law and moral values of the society.

The petitioner said the Holy Quran prohibited vulgarity in songs and poems, and that the ‘vulgar songs’ created enmity in the hearts of religious scholars and Ulema against the government, as they thought that the government was patronising vulgarity. He also said the respondents had launched, cinematographed, advertised, published and exhibited these songs without any lawful jurisdiction.

Asif Mehmood Khan asked the court to impose a ban on all the audio and video songs of the two respondent female singers, requesting the censor board and other respondents to certify all the films and songs in accordance with Section 6 of the Motion Pictures Ordinance from 1979.

What a joke!! There are more pressing and important rulings to be made in the high court than this!!
If people think her songs are vulgar they don't have to listen 2 it, simple as that

Re: Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs

Well for all that matters we all know that Pakistan has no system, therefore whoever is banning these songs and other vulgar stuff legally , I am happy!

not just this, i knw this desi family that kept on raving about the stage drama’s .. and out of sheer interest i once got a friend to get me one from pakistan … and i was shocked at what I saw !!! Its as cheap and pathetic as crap … and clearly it shows the lowness of the vulgar minds and men and women happy to act in such pathetic plays …

Therefore even if its the courts that ultimately ban them , I am happy , coz better for someone to do it then no one!

they should create a strong censory team in Pakistan to kill the crap .. :snooty:

At last some one took notice,.... i really like her voice and enjoy listening her songs, but some of her "mujra-songs" are way to vulgar you can't even listen them with any family member.

For Example, songs like these.. i mean wtf..is this poetry????

***doodh pyar wala pey ley.... lagna aey kamzoor..

phendi hey barsaat vey..... na javein aaj raat vey...

Wey Gujjara Wey.... doodh peetey ney kachey ..***

and last but not least..

mangi wich daang phairdaa ... & kundi na khirka seedha under aaaah..

^ it wont kill the crap, that is what so many ppl just don't get.

Its the vulgarity in ppl's minds that needs to be killed, and whether stuff is banner or not, i'm afraid this vulgarity still remains.

Re: Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs

^^ Great then let it be in minds only not on TV

Re: Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs

wine can you post some youtube links to those songs. :D

i don't want infractions :D ... but you can search the keywords ;)

Thank you for quoting lyrics of songs that you consider vulgar. Are these included in the list of banned songs.

So, the first song says "drink milk, you look week; It is raining, don't leave tonight; Hey Gujjar, drink milk"

and the second one say " don't knock just com in"
There are have been many such songs in Urdu and Punjabi that have similar lyrics, many of which are considered classics. A lot of classical Urdu and punjabi poetry is also similar.

Perhaps it is a sign of changing times.

Re: Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs

bad news for the naseebo lal fans. lol

Re: Lahore High Court bans Naseebo Lal songs
