Sorry to say that but seems like you don’t know a damn thing about historical movies. The movie is not only about cricket, its about a whole culture before independence , a sweet language poeple spoke and naive people who were trapped by the British rule and how they confronted them. If you think it was only about cricket, take a hike and think again why its in Oscar nominations in the first place
its a good movie but I don't believe its going to win.
As far as I know No man's land is the big favirote.
another movie which i thought should have been nominated was a movie called kandahar, which was about a afghani woman under taliban government. it was made before september 11.

Lagaan is a historical movie alright. You can make movies about the past but it doesn’t mean that you can make up stuff on your own beliefs. I never saw the movie but I’ve heard the story so many times that it feels like I watched it myself. The movie is so unrealistic just like all of the other Indian movies. Like that’s how cricket started in the subcontinent. The people who played the game for the first time ever won from the masters who started it. I think it shouldn’t even be close to oscar nominees.

O Phuleese reaching a conclusion without even watching the movie? And YES for your information, it is probably the only very realistic movie made in Indian film Industry. And if you were not aware of this, thats how cricket started in subcontinent becuz it was played by British first and later they left their culture behind and many things beside cricket, were adopted by South Asians....and this happened in many countries wherever there was British rule.
nahi yar ASN, you're kinda wrong about this one. Lagaan was one of the very few movies you could watch with your family, the story line wasnt bad either. Songs were superb. Have you seen it?
Beta why don’t you look into previous threads about Lagaan in this section and find out that how much of those 100 people actually loved lagaan…and you’ll get a veryy good answer for that. and let me guess which movie you guys will find realistic …Kabhi Khushi Khabhi Gham ??
If a crap film like Moulin Rouge could get 8 nominations, why not Lagaan could get one nomination.

iam not at all surprised by the nominations but the sad part is that there were some racist indians who thought gadar was a better movie than lagaan just because gadar had a anti muslim theme where are all those shameless creatures if some one could just bring those post back

Liking a particular movie is a matter of personal choice. If some people did not like Lagaan, it is their choice. Who are you to pass judgement on whether they are wrong or right. If they liked some other movie (for whatever reasons) it is their choice. For them that particular movie was better. If they feel Lagaan was crap then it was crap for them. Other people will not and should not have the same choice in movies as you.

just like Indian public are entitled to like propaganda movies against muslims, Kabir is entitled to pass give his opinion on those people. This is what freedom is all about.
In a free society, all members of a country should be entitled to their opinions, not just the community holding the whip.

I never said one word about Kabir’s choice. He is entitled to have his opinion on any movie he likes – I am not passing judgement on him. It is he who is passing judgement on others saying that their choice is bad.
I liked the movie Lagaan. There may be others who may not. I dont go about calling them racist and saying that their choice is bad. And just as he is entitled to have opinions on “racist people”, I am entitled to have an opinion on him and I’ll have my say – this is “freedom of speech” !!!

No contradiction my friend. I was merely exercising my right to “freedom of speech” by saying what I think about Kabir judging other people. He is of course free to say what he wants, but I am merely asking him a question (Who is he to…)
well bombay kid it was not a question of freedom of speech or one likes this and does not like that. the thing is that there were some racist people who were exploiting the anti muslim message in gaddar and were delibrately sidelining lagaan

I just saw the cricket match, it was funny, and very unrealistic... Dhothi pehen kar catch kis tarha karte hain dive kar ke? Maybe the Indian team should wear dhothis too, their fielding will improve...
Asoka was also shortlisted, but didnt make it. Asoka had more history in it, and I studied his tenure in Pakistan Studies as a high school student so I really enjoyed watching that movie, but sadly it didnt make it.
But who cares, we have Lord of The Rings on 13 places!!! I hope it ends up getting 10 oscars, as Ben-Hurs 11 Oscars to me was an unbreakable milestone that should stay on for ever. But then again, LOTR deserves to do better than Titanic, which sadly has 11 oscars to its name.
Oh, and the best foriegn movie of all times -- "Life is Beautiful"
