Labor and Delivery

My due date is just 3 weeks away and no matter how hard I try not to think about it labor pain is constantly on my mind. Mentally I believe I am strong enough to endure pain and discomfort but exactly how painful is childbirth?

Any tips/advice to ease the pain?

Re: Labor and Delivery

Ask for an epidural! Its a safe shot of a drug you will get to help ease your pain. Oh and don't forget to ask Allah for help..it will be fine! I have not had any kids yet but know people who have. Don't worry! The doctors are there and know what they are doing. I'A it will all be fine.

Re: Labor and Delivery

Don’t worry about it desigirl! Woman has been made tough enough to go through this. The best part is that it’s worth it all.

My advice, just think of it as being the most natural of all processes. Remind yourself constantly about this fact and know that you can do it.

Focus on the end product. :hugz:

Re: Labor and Delivery

good luck!

Re: Labor and Delivery

desigirl, try not to worry. Labor and delivery are painful but not more than you can bear. Many women opt for the epidural which takes almost all of the pain away. I'm pretty needle-phobic so it wasnt an option for me and really, it wasnt so very bad. It was the worst for my younger 2 when they gave me pitocin to get my contractions going. Thats nasty stuff! Avoid if you can! But even with the pitocin, the pain was not more than I could bear. I got a half-dose of a painkiller called Nubain and that helped. They put half a dose in the IV and half is given in a large gauge needle so I didnt want that half lol but the IV half helped. From what I heard from other moms, Nubain works so much better than Demerol. Many say that all demerol does is make you groggy and when it wears off it makes you nausous. But the nubain really took care of the most severe pains and made me not care about them lol. My hubby was also really amazing. I was having back labor and he rubbed my back for hours in just the right spot, held my hand and encouraged me thru it all. What a gem he was!

I know its hard not to worry, esp when you dont really know what to expect till it happens. But really, I did it 3 times and it wasnt so very bad and if I could, I'd do it all again in a heartbeat!

Wishing you the very best! And let us know when the little one arrives!!

Re: Labor and Delivery

Wish you all the best, InshAllah, things will go well :rose:

Re: Labor and Delivery

why are you even thinking about labor pains?

I think just let each day pass by! Make sure you stay active with work, exercise etc.

I don't know why but I was not worried about labor pains even at the time of delivery.

^having said that - I don't think mine was easy. It was painful and I felt ALL my veins would pop out =(

but still! who cares - I mean the doctors are right there to stop the blood bath lol

don't worry girl! You'll be fine!

Re: Labor and Delivery

^ Lol thanks hun your right but I took a semester off from school so I get alot of time to think lol

Ladies your all so useful...alhamdullilah it will be a normal vaginal delivery no C-section which totally scared me. I have heard of women that took the epidural and suffered side effects such as frequwnt headaches, backpains etc...I don't want to deal with that!!

Re: Labor and Delivery

luckly for me epidural was HEAVEN. As soon as the epidural was given believe me I did not even know I EXISTED! LOL

It felt like I was flying through the softest of the clouds - and umm *baby? ye the baby felt a little pain - and thus cried while I walked the heaven on earth! *

LOL

**you'll forget about **delivery in 6 weeks - PROMISE!

=)

Re: Labor and Delivery

it HURTS a LOT.. but then every delivery is different.. just know that its natural and normal and u WILL forget all bout it in about a months time.. get over the trauma of it all and probably end up getting pregnant again next yr :)

Re: Labor and Delivery

aww can't tell you about natural delivery, but I hear it can be painful, BUT the pain can also be managed with drugs like epidural. All so keep in mind to be prepared for the unexpected and hope for the best. LIke someone mentioned make sure to remain active, walk a lot, do exercises that you may have been taught in childbirth classes....

I am not trying to scare you but just being realiztic. Inshallah you won't have a c-section, but I would read up on it anyways just in case you do end up with one, you won't be shocked. Just trust the docs to do what is best for you, and pray you have a safe and easy delivery. Definitely you will eventually forget all about it after baby is born :)

Re: Labor and Delivery

Yes, every delivery is different and so many people will tell you horror stories about the first delivery being the most difficult..not so in my case. My first one was born about 15 minutes after I arrived at the hospital, my doc didnt have enough time to meet us there so he was delivered by an intern who rushed into the room just in time. The contractions were painful but I was shocked at the speedy delivery and exxpected so much worse than it was, I thought I was in for hours and hours of those hard contractions but out he came. You never know, ya know?

Re: Labor and Delivery

desigirl, i was the same way you were thinking about labor pains and all but what got me through was that so many women have been doing this for centuries before us. So we can do it too. I also didnt want to take an epidural because of the same side effects you are wrorried about and ALhamdulillah didnt. My labor and delivery were textbook perfect so i could deal with it without epidural. But keep an open mind. If you decide the pain is too much to bear, then dont hesitate to ask for it. There is nothing wrong with taking an epidural.

In my case, i was in labor for appx 20 hours. I started walking and pacing when the contractions would hit since laying or sitting down just made them worse. I stayed at home for as long as i could. WHen it was too much for me to bear, we headed to the hospital and discovered i was 5 cms dilated. I still kept walking in the hallways and also got into the whirlpool tub which was AWESOME! Highly recommend taking advantage of tat if your hospital offers that.

The only hard part was transition. And i think it was super painful because i was already afraid of it. I think alot of this is mental: if you think its going to hurt, its going to hurt alot worse than it normally would. Makes sense?

Dont worry, just go with the flow. InshaAllahyou will do great. What helped me immensely was reading a lot of birth stories to prepare me for different situations. Try that if you want to.

Re: Labor and Delivery

Mama wow your first delivery was a breeze! Lucky you

Ira yes I know exactly what your talking about. I believe its a matter of mind over matter. And I love reading those birth stories as well :-)

What would you ladies say about medications/drugs such as Demerol/Nubain? Recommended?

Re: Labor and Delivery

yes...gimme those drugs man!!! holey moley!!! I didnt have time with the first delivery I got thru the whole thing with no drugs or anything but I DID ask for drugs when they started sewing me up. He was born so fast that even tho he was a tiny guy, I got a rip which needed stitches. The intern jerk just started sewing with NO numbing in the area and no medications so I halted THAT procedure pretty fast and demanded drugs. I got the nubain and it was nice. VERY nice lol. Got nubain also for the next 2 deliveries and it surely helped much although those deliveries were vastly different and very painful.

Something that I noticed is that when you have the water, if it doesnt break then your contractions have something substantial to push against. Once they broke my water the contractions just about stopped because there was so much less to push against. If I had another, I'd refuse them breaking the water, it didnt speed things up at all. Rather, it all stopped and I ended up having to go on Pitocin which is really nasty stuff. If they;d have left me alone and let nature take its couse then I think things would have been so much better.

DONT interfere with mother nature!!! She gets mad and she gets even!!

Re: Labor and Delivery

some time i wonder why god gives pains during delivery..what is the reason...

Re: Labor and Delivery

God gave woman the repsonsibility of giving birth, because He knew that we can handle it, and we’re strong!

Childbirth is not as painful as some make out. For both of my first pregnancies, i was not given any form of pain relief (through my own choice) and whilst i won’t say it was a walk in the park, it wasn’t agonising pain either. You have to mentally prepare yourself and just concentrate on the end result. And if you feel the need for any pain relief, it is readily available for you right there, at your disposal!

DesiGirl, you’ll be fine. Good luck, and i hope to hear the good news soon :hugz:

Re: Labor and Delivery

yeha right but if he wanted he makes delivery without any pain and complication but ..us ki maslihat wohi jane.....

Re: Labor and Delivery

i would just like to state again taht every womans experiece is diff... but i would like to emphasize on teh fact that YES IT WILL HURT.

i dont know why women are saying not it wont or its not that bad etc .. dont sugar coat it women..

poster: YES IT WILL HURT. when u accept taht, then it will be easy to just bear the pain.

i remember when i was close to delivery time and asked this q i was told the same, so i went in thinking oh ya i cna do it with no pain relief and how bad can it get.. in a nutshell had an unrealistic pic in my head of how it would be.. and i have a pretty high tolernace for pain but oh my god it hurt like a biatch! and i did need epidural cuz i was induced. since i had made up my mind that it cant be that bad, when it got worse, i just didnt wanna go along with what was going on.. all i coudl think was.. but tat poster said it would be easy, but it didnt hurt her.. but but but..

so ya.. keep it real.

but i hope you have a safe and happy delivery and the baby be healthy :) inshallah.

now im not saying that some of hte posters who have had it easy are lying. it sgreat they had such wonderful expriences.

but they are the lucky few. generally. labour and delivery HURTS!

im not trying to scare you . just trying to keep it real.

Re: Labor and Delivery

Thanks for asking the question. I’ve got these same fears. And I’m petite with really narrow hips. I feel like some women are built for this, and I’m not one of them. :bummer:
