The varna system originated as a sophisticated system of division of labour in the Indic society at an age when other ‘cultures’ were living in caves. But over the centuries it was perverted by those in power Brahmins] to consolidate their hold over the society and made into a hereditary one.

Also other forward caste like Thakur/Rajput on whose lands Dalits worked as bonded labour in their fields, incidently none of person from this caste were even freedom fighter with exception like revloutionary Ratan Singh:)
baniyas were not fighter let alone freedom fighter, they made the money, pundas were really dumb, they never had any of the above and yet are considered the greatest opressors:D

Caste system in sanskrit translates into Varna System
Bhagwan has said, Chaturguno chaturvibhag, four seprate qualities make four seprate caste, it was flexible in begining during vedic times and started being heridiatery from the time of post vedic literature:)
