the caste system = status system enforced by birth.
if you say a nai or qasai's son or daughter is lower in status to someone else, that is the caste system.
and the uber-rich and elite have never had to play by any rules. imran khan etc is not the norm.

Mahabharat has also very contradictory stand on casteism, Maharaja yayati was a kshtriya but his one wife was brahmin and another was Rakshasi, while Karn always lived as son of low caste charioteer and Eklavya as another low caste Bheel:)

But don't you think that there is a culture of following zaat paat rather than factors you mentioned like Taqwa, etc? Even in Syed families Najeeb ul Tarfain concept still prevails.
ab ek nayaa masalah khaRaa kar diyaa aap ne lol...do you believe in Saiyad thing? who is going to prove or disprove who is saiyad and who is NOT...i care less for saiyeds or whatever they call themselves...as far as Islam is concerned, everyone is equal and even Prophet [SAWS] said to his beloved daughter Hazrat Fatima [RA] that she had to earn her own jannat!
i consider saiyads a muslim version of Brahmins in Hinduism...they are NOT above the rest...we are ALL equal as a Muslim...period!

I do agree with your views, but we can't deny the fact that Syed reverence opens door for zaat paat in Muslim society even today

Bhagwan has said, Chaturguno chaturvibhag, four seprate qualities make four seprate caste, it was flexible in begining during vedic times and started being heridiatery from the time of post vedic literature:)

I agree with you to a certain extent. The biggest oppressors of Dalits in the contemporary times are so called Kshatriyas [Thakurs] and Shoodras who are often confused with Dalits, even on this forum]. The caricature of evil plotting Brahmin was created by Periyaar and others of his ilk along with his Muslim allies to further their political ambitions.
However it is also true that the progenitors of rigid varna system were Brahmins. Once their ideas had taken complete hold of the Indic societies and they had established complete hegemony over education at the apex of Indian social pyramid, they had no need to go around oppressing individual Dalits.

It seems that both the Indian and Pakistani societies have to go a long way for ending the distinction between neech zaat and unchi zaat. Whatever have been the reasons for ones superiority in past (religious, educational, etc), should now be ended.

There are 8 crore Baniyas are in India and they don't pay 8 crores in taxes, Brahmin even with the reservation system still forms the top cadre, finally race comes to excellence I mean Vishwanathan Anand or Sachin and it ends in Brahmin. It was Brahmins who gave Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, along with bulk of freedom fighters, I am still to find one Baniya who is PVC, but the PVC list starts with punda and ends with punda. Last I heard was pundas are most corrupted lot but the others like maya, mulayam, raja proved the OBC and backwards are the most forward when it comes to financial corruption:)
