KPMG and E&Y

Any one ever worked there or heard of the place? Plz give me feedback…good and bad. Thanks.

Anyone know of anyone named Lakhani in Ernst and Young? He is supposedly part of top management…and he is from PK…

Re: KPMG and E&Y

I think anyone who is in the accounting field know of both those companies.
They are the best in thier field, its hard to get into them and the work is very strenuous. Normally, people will work there a couple of years in the begining of thier careers to get the names under thier belts.

Those who dont mind the long horrendous hours stick around for the long run.
The money is definately there if you survive.

Re: KPMG and E&Y

Give me the initial of this Lakhani's first name. Why do you want to know?

Re: KPMG and E&Y

^^ she probably wants 2 know cos she needs sifarish from him 2 get in2 the firm! lol....
...ive heard of KPMG-one of my mates worked there for a yr, she is now completing her accounting degree-and will prob go back there for a job or summat!

Re: KPMG and E&Y

Muniya: Ya my husband knows a little abt them....but he just moved here so i was trying to find out more info...

hskhan: I don't have the initials of his first name...i just have his last name...

kazi: Yup thats right....if i can have someone help why not....did ur friend have much work experience before she went??? Or did she go in as an intern?

Re: KPMG and E&Y

I deal with KPMG offices worldwide on an almost daily basis and I can say one thing for them - they are raking it in!!!!
Not only are their employees well paid (not surprising considering how much KPMG charge for each individual service - like £175 for filling in a form - £500 for an hours meeting!!!)....but the skills you can pick up and be trained for are amazing.

Re: KPMG and E&Y

^ really???? Can u give me some tips on how my husband can get in? He just came from PK and has an ACCA degree...he is going to take his CFA exam in June....and CPA a few months after that. He has no work experience....do u know of how he can get in or can u give some advice on what he can do???

Re: KPMG and E&Y

besy bet for him right now would be to go to job fairs where KPMG, E&Y, PWC etc are hiring, this ay atleast he can get face to face with people in the practice rather than just the

I will be honest with you, it will be tough

him having no experience, and no local education would work against him. If he had experience in Pakistan with one of the major accounting company or a bank he would have been better off.

Talking to people in the target companies could be helpful too. If he goes to events organized by CAMP or just talking to people in local community he may be able to find inside connections.

Re: KPMG and E&Y

KPMG and E&Y are part of whats now known as Big-4 of accounting firms. The other two being PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Deloitte. PwC is the largest global accounting firm. All Big-4 are kinda similar in terms of work, clients, pay and benefits. The corporate culture is slightly different in each place.

Its not easy to get into any of them if you are applying for a fresh staff position (no experience) and you are not a US college grad. It is not impossible, of course. The best option for your husband is to enroll in a good school for some courses (if you are in LA area, then safe bets are UCLA, USC etc) and then network to get in front of these firms in their hiring events. Hiring events happen multiple times a year. Also try to get involved in some of the accounting fraternities to be in the know as to what is going on.

After Big-4, there are other large global accounting firms. These include Grant Thornton, BDO Seidman, McGladery, Moss Adams etc. All of them offer competitive salaries and great work environment and probably better chances of moving up the career path (due to their smaller size compared to Big-4).

My advise is to try all the Big-4. Don't just limit yourself to sifarish, but go about this in a professional manner (like I stated above). However, keep your options open and don't get too fixated only on Big-4. Try all good accounting firms.

By the way, its good that your husband is going for a CFA qualification, but the real key is to get his CPA. Then all doors will open quickly when he applies to accounting firms.

Re: KPMG and E&Y

I worked for KPMG for a while, it is tough to get in but one of the best accounting firm anyone can work for.

Re: KPMG and E&Y

Mr F. and Faisal : Thanks for all the info.....Do u think he can get in as an intern??? We emailed them but their internship interviews are already finished at KPMG....but do u think its better for him to get in that way???? And can u explain what CAMP is???

Ehsan: Tell me abt the internship program...if u know abt it....and how its helpful...

Re: KPMG and E&Y

Pyaari, I dont know about KPMG and EY. I worked for Arthur Andersen.. until the whole Enron thing killed it so my info is from that perspective.

Internships are very tough, the process starts months in advance and the overwhelming majority of interns are taken from select universities. They dont have to be Ivy, but usually major universities.

I dont know of a single intern that I ran into who got in by applying as an individual. I dont want to discourage you, but realize that at Andersen, internship interviews for May started as early as the fall before and for most interns the offers were made in Jan-Feb time frame, very few in march, and almost none in april.

CAMP is cuncil for advancement of Muslim professionals, its a social and networking group which has chapters in a number of major cities. It is mostly young professionals and students and some older folks and is a great place to meet people.

Now Faisal and/or I can help with his resume. Faisal would be much more knowledgeable in what works in the industry, because even when i was at andersen I was in the consulting side and not the accounting side of the house.

So step 1 is to get the resume ready, step 2 is to post it on every single career site. step 3 is to start attending job fairs and go to networking events. as Faisal said, once he gets his CPA he will have no real issues, the market is so good for CPAs, that sometimes I wonder if i should have done CPA :D

Re: KPMG and E&Y

Internship is a good idea.

There are two kinds of internships ... summer and winter. More than likely summer internships are already filled up by now. You can still try for winter internships (start approaching the firms in mid-to-late summer). Don't limit yourselves to KPMG only. At this time and in your situation I will advise going all out for all major accounting firms. You can't be too picky right now.

Re: KPMG and E&Y

To add to what faisal just said. Dont discount internal accounting and finance type roles at any company, shoot for companies with some brand recognition, major banks or fortune 500 type companies, but even if a company is not a fortune 500, ust get the foot in the door, some local experience will open tons of doors.

There is usually high turnover in banks' corporate operations, the jobs require knowledge of accounting and finance, but are not necessarily accounting jobs..but analyst roles in securities trading, institutional assets (retirement plans), etc.
High turnover at analyst level position means that they are almost always hiring for those positions.

Re: KPMG and E&Y

As far as india is conccerned KPMG is having large project & presence here with compare to E&Y ....

Re: KPMG and E&Y

thanks for the info....i really appreciate ur help....inshallah i will complete his resume and have someone check it.

Re: KPMG and E&Y

If he is a full qualified ACCA, then he has a very fair chance of getting into these big five firms! There are loads of off-shore jobs in these firms in the Carribean and Bermuda!

In fact these days there's a shortage of qualified accountants in the world.

Re: KPMG and E&Y

What kind of interview questions to they pose in the initial interviews? Do they ask how to handle real accounting situations?

Re: KPMG and E&Y

All my friends who did anything remotely accounts related started off their careers with them.

Re: KPMG and E&Y

Pyaari, a good advice for your husband at this time would be to contact one of the temp accounting agencies (such as accountemps and accountants overload) where its relatively easy to get in and get a job. That way, he will start building his resume with some US accounting experience, which can lead to a Big 4 career.
