Know your Mahajir:

Re: Know your Mahajir:

Urdu's vocabulary is largely based on Farsi and Arabic...Hindi's primarily from Sanskrit and some farsi and arabic...

Re: Know your Mahajir:

Mostly true, but there are exceptions, especially those whose ancestors came from Central Asia and Afghanistan and settled into these regions and then come '47 migrated back Pakistan...

Re: Know your Mahajir:

Though mushie is not a bihari, his flat-wide nose has striking resemblence to that of Bal Thackrey…probably the decendant of a hindu…though he likes to claim that he is syed…:hoonh:

Re: Know your Mahajir:

I know a lot of ppl who claim to be true Syeds but that always aint the case.. he’s probably Hindu bania converted to Islam.

Re: Know your Mahajir:

Actually, there are "Punjabi Muahjirs" in Karachi, though they do not speak Punjabi, even if their grandfathers might have. They originally migrated from Punjab to Delhi long ago and after independence came to Pakistan and settled in Karachi like most who could not speak Punjabi. We call them "Punjabi Saudagraan" (Sauda meaning business goods as they are a very strong business community like Memons) and the areas where they live in are sometimes called "Delhi Mercantile Society" etc. I don't know the percentage of Delhiwallas who are in this category.

There are also Madrasi Muhajirs. They live largely in Mehmodabad colony or so I remember. Then we have the 'Rohail Khund' Muhajirs who are Rohilla Pathans. Of course they no longer speak Pashto.

But I'm surprised that so far there is nothing on UPwallas or Lukhnawis?

Re: Know your Mahajir:

wow...great post!..very interesting and informative. I too would like a map attached to correlate with the different types.

Re: Know your Mahajir:

Musharraf was born in Old Delhi, and lived there till his family fled to Pakistan during Partition.

Liaquat Ali Khan's father was the Nawab of Karnal, a small town in Haryana not too far from Delhi.

Shaukat Aziz, I believe, actually is Bihari. I know for sure that his wife is.

Altaf Hussain isnt Bihari. His family is originally from Agra, in UP.

Re: Know your Mahajir:

Madrasis are really similar to Hyderabadis...they intermarry frequently, and share the same strange dialect of Urdu.

Rohilkhand is just an area of UP, north of Delhi. People from Bareilly, Rampur, Moradabad are all 'Rohilkhand Mohajirs.'
