and btw I know two people who found their spouses through a matrimonial site and are extremely happy with their marriages mashAllah, more so than my friends who had a very conservative arranged marriage or love marriages. Not drawing any conclusions but this is what Ive seen in my circle.

but one of my friends said that meeting on a matrimonial site is no different, however, if all the other person does is chat and doesn't take things to the next level, then it is trouble.

As others have noted, he could have set it up before he got married.

Or someone is just using his picture. Some jackass had taken one of my pics from GS and set up his profile on shaadi.com a few years ago. (shhh that's my story and I am sticking to it)

Or...he may be proactively looking for #2-#4 haha

Unless he really was trying it on** with her**.. in which case it is her business..

Could be an old or inactive or fake profile but I think with some of those sites you can see when someone last logged in as well as obviously when he sent the request/pm but then again it could still be fake..

Things happen. There is no compulsions in online life. Some people create profiles on 1000000s sites and then forget about their profile. Whats the big deal?
