kids still on bottle

My 3 year old almost 4 still takes one bottle at night.and my 2 year old as well.

Tried to get the elder one off it and recently read that 2 is the maximum.age they should be off!!! Worried.now

So how ? She won’t drink from cup

Errm, what difference it’s gonna make to them when they are 16, wheter they quit their bottles at age five or age three?

I suggest, don’t worry too much. They are gonna be kids, only once in their life. You will never find a seven years old drinking from bottle. Your kids will be the same. In the meanwhile, if they are four and two, and love drinking from bottle, let them enjoy it. Don’t take their small pleasures away from them

Re: kids still on bottle

As long as they are brushing teeth before bed and not taking the bottle to bed to drink all hours of the night its fine.

Re: kids still on bottle

^ That. Otherwise, hello bad teeth and future dentist bills.

Re: kids still on bottle

weird, I know with us 3 kids my mum said she had us onto a sippy cup by 11/12 months and onto a full glass by 1.5/2 years. I remember one of nephews was giving trouble about giving up his bottle at around 2 and my sister in law spent a lot of time disciplining him to get it off. I always assumed there must be some reason my family members were weaning kids off their bottles. But if it does no harm why do people not let kids have a bottle till whenever they want?

Re: kids still on bottle

^My mum did the same.

Re: kids still on bottle

My eldest never took a bottle at all, went from being exclusively breast fed to a sippy cup to regular cup. My twins quit taking bottles by their second birthday…I don’t know, a 4-5 year old (even a 3 year old IMO) still drinking from a bottle (even just at night) seems weird :bummer:

Pediatricians and dentists here in the US are pretty strict about prolonged bottled use…after the first birthday, it’s no longer needed for nutrition and is more of an emotional or security crutch.

Re: kids still on bottle

It’s bad for their teeth, basically, because people put kids to bed with it- the milk pooling around in their mouths can cause serious cavities and the nipples can push their teeth out. It’s better if they drink from a cup and then rinse out their mouths and brush their teeth before bed. But also, no kid will voluntarily drop a comforting habit as night time bottles usually are- at some point, you will have to step in and intervene. 2.5/3 is a good age for that.

Mine quit cold turkey with no issues thankfully. I told him the new baby would need the bottle and he was a big kid now. That was it- he was over it. He loves milk so now he has it in his cereal and also from a regular glass when he wants.

Re: kids still on bottle

Don’t worry about it being too late or any of that. Show them the bottles. Say they’re dirty, make a big deal of throwing them away. Then take them shopping for cups they like. Hopefully there won’t be any issues, except you’ll probably notice they drink less milk, but they get the necessary vitamins and minerals from other sources.

Really? I am not challenging, but this is exactly why nature keeps our baby teeth till age seven, so milk drinking can be done safely.

I can’t see how the adult teeth that have not grown yet can get a negative effect from milk drinking at age, for lets say

Re: kids still on bottle

but nature didnt make bottles. i don’t think you’d find a woman in nature with the patience to breastfeed a kid to the age of seven that easily… (i do know someone who did  )

That is not the point. Point is this that what harm bottle drinking till age of five can bring to the teeth that are not even born yet

Re: kids still on bottle

well pal, they are pretty important. if a kid ends up with extensive teeth decay at the ages coincident with when they learn to perfect their speech skills, they’ll have a tough time even later in life. i have franshipz from kindergarten days (india in 80s - erry other kid tooth decay - brown teeth) who still speak funny.

Ok a little research on Google presented no solid evidence that tooth decay is a real issue. Medical research shows that obesity in kids is a more threatening issue, if they keep using the bottle till later age. That means that if kid is still drinking milk from bottle, then you have to balance the meal accordingly. That is it.

Oh bhai that is because in India and Pakistan, people used to add extra sugar in the milk for kids. I remember very clearly, even in my family, moms adding extra sugar.

Re: kids still on bottle

^ But your gums aren’t going anywhere and gum disease isn’t pleasant. For that matter, neither are cavities in young kids. Trips to the dentist, treating cavities and possibly pulling teeth, pain, medications etc. - just cos the teeth will fall out at 7 doesn’t meant you won’t treat tooth decay before then and that it won’t be distressing for your kid.

To me this is very similar to toilet training. No 15 year old will be pooping in a diaper but there’s a reason why you potty train your kids way before then. It’s more hygienic, first and foremost, vs wearing a diaper, and it is more convenient and better for everyone’s health (your kid’s and yours) to have them pee and poo in the toilet by the time they are 3/3.5.

Re: kids still on bottle

My 4 year old still takes a bottle 3 times a day, I don’t see the harm in it, she drinks milk in a cup in school but refuses to at home, I think it’s a comfort thing, especially her bedtime bottle. And I prefer that she has it in a bottle rather than not at all. I know of kids that took a bottle till they were 7/8 years old. When they stopped, they never drank milk. So maybe the earlier you try a sippy cup the better it is.

I understand the gum disease part. Both my daughters drank till 4 1/2 years. Now they are 8 and 11. Alhamdulillah no gum disease or cavity issue. Doesn’t mean that I am encouraging that, but it’s certainly not as threatening as its made to sound like.

Re: kids still on bottle

Hmmmm thanks guys.

Theybdont have a bottle during day.its at night.but they brush teeth then hit the bed with a bottle each.

OK so need.to.change that.my little.one whose 2 sleeps with bottle.in her.mouth like a.pacifier although she won’t actually take a pacifier.

She uses to sleep. My eldest the.3 yr old.can.brush her teeth after milk now but the younger one will.definitely not. Anyideaa?

And she usually wants 2 bottles. So I’ll.cut that to one at.night now and give one earlier rather than.2 at night.

Re: kids still on bottle

Maybe she is hungry, therefore wants 2bottles at night…
