Kids on a leash.

Ridiculous or good idea ? I have seen many parents have kids on leash in a mall or some outdoor or indoor event .
One mother who had triplets , gives the following reasons in her defence in her blog Children on a leash? Never say “never.”
*What if someone grabbed one of them? Do I just abandon the other two while I run after the absconded one? *
*What if they all bolt? You know…in three different directions? What then? *

Re: Kids on a leash.

I see nothing wrong with it at all. Little ones have very little impulse control, if they see something exciting they naturally want to run to it - a puppy, a balloon, a ball bouncing into the street. A "leash" or tether gives them a little feeling of independence (ie., they dont have to hold mommy's hand) and it gives the protection from running into a street or getting lost in a crowd or getting into any sort of danger. And I totally understand the mom of triplets - they sure can scatter quickly and its very scary. So what are the choices? You can put them in a stroller, no exercise and no independence at all. You can let them go and hope that they listen and dont scatter. Or you can use a tether.

I can understand the practical aspect but for some reason the sight of it gives me the 'willies'---just reminds me too much of people with their dogs! :D

Re: Kids on a leash.

Don't call it a "leash" and call it "baby safety strap" - it just sounds better.

Re: Kids on a leash.

I don't like them. I have taken a set of 5 year old twin boys, a 4 year old girl and a 6 month old to the park on my own before and I didnt need any safety straps.

Rules, awareness of dangers and consistancy with rewards/sanctions work just as well. You have prep the children before you go anywhere, even to Asda!

I find that the younger ones are easier to control. I once had a group of 5 9 year olds on a school trip, they were awful, were fully aware of the dangers of crossing a road without traffic lights but did it anyway! The little ones listen and are much easier to bribe!

Re: Kids on a leash.

Oh gosh, I really hate seeing these "leashes" or whatever you want to call them, but then on the flip side, I think about the mothers of twins or triplets, or those who have several kids of different ages with them at one time, what do you do???? Esp. if they are super active.

Re: Kids on a leash.

My two year old sprints faster than I can.

You talk to them before leaving the house, explain step by step what is going to happen e.g you are going to hold mummy's hand.

Kids usually respond well when an adult tells them what is going to happen, rather than just taking them out without explaining where, why, how and what.

Re: Kids on a leash.

I've seen many moms and/or nannies with more than one little one to care for using strollers to keep the littles safe and contained. Dont you think it would be better to let them walk and have a bit of independence? Most especially in congested areas, cities etc. Even stores and malls...I mean it gives the care-taker more freedom too, because you just hold the strap instead of a hand. The little ones get to roam and explore just a little, mom gets to shop a bit and everyone is happy instead of having meltdowns from boredom and frustration (which you see with hand-holders and stroller-bound littles)

Ok what would you say about this :

Re: Kids on a leash.

I've used it for my older girl. She loved walking real fast at malls and airports and just so she didn't get stuck in the middle of someone and got lost, we tied the safety strap around her. It seemed a bit funny at first... like walking a little puppy (:D) but it's quite useful. We didn't have to use it more than a couple of times.

Re: Kids on a leash.

my mum messed up and did not patent the idea, when i was a wee bit shorty about 2 years old and my parents went for hajj, and aftrwards to medina, as she went in sajda, i bolted and she did not realize for a few that I had bailed, then they started looking for me. i was found at one f the entrances helping pilgrims put their shoes away in the lil cubbies before coming in the mosque. I was such a holy person even then,..

..well holy person was always tied and thethered to one of the parental units with a string during prayers after that..kinda like shaitan is tied to a wall during ramadan :(

Re: Kids on a leash.

HA! better than having a 2-3 year old on a baby bjorn!! :frowning:

though in one instance i swear I saw one lady with the kids on a harness/leash…and her puppy in a stroller. :aq:

actually, i was way ahead of my time and inspecting shoes just like they do at airports now :snooty:

3 year old on a baby bjorn???:eeek:
my back is hurting just thinking about it

One of my relatives went to Umrah with 3 kids and she used to tie them and the youngest one was the one who managed to untie and escape in every prayer.
