Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

Kiddo enjoyed sooji halwa with dessicated coconut , for breakfast .. then had some cheese for lunch. Shunned lasagna for dinner, so then I offered him carrot pulao, shunned again .. eventually I asked him what he wanted and he said " jee-ho" took me ages before I realized he wanted sooji halwa again ! so that’s what he had for dinner too !

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

d you girls prepare separate meals for kids?

I jus give mine whatever we are having since he started to eat solids.. like this morning he had toast, boiled egg, and half an applefor breakfast, aloo gosht with roti for lunch and snacks were mango cut into small pieces and honey nut cheerios. He will have aloo gosht wth roti for dinner too.

I feel likea bad mom now… I hve never made him anything special :frowning:

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

GTG, I think when they are little and cant eat all the spices , its ok to make them something separately. But when they become older I guess its definitely the way forward that the kids eat what everyone else is eating, other wise they will get used to having a separate meal , which isnt a very healthy habit :hmmm:

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

nope, I’ve never ever made special seperate meals for my kids. Even as toddlers, whatever we ate, they ate and it’s served us well.

They are not picky eaters, and can tolerate masalay and enjoy spicy foods.

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

:k:

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

Yep same here.. We don’t eat very spicy food anyway so there is never a need. When he was a baby though I used to wash and mash chicken, meat, potatoes etching and now his tolerance for spiciness is just like us.

I m not a great cook so making separate food isnt my idea of spending time..So far he hasn’t shown much pickiness so hoping it state that way.. Mommy won’t be happy otherwise!

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

Same here! We don’t eat super blistering spicy or super oily food anyway…I would also just rinse it a little when they were starting on table foods…icing on the cake was when as a toddler one of my twins picked up a piece of hari mirchi from the salad at a restaurant and popped it in his mouth…I was prepared for him to pass out lol but he didn’t flinch…just gulped down some ice water and continued chewing on his naan…after that I knew we’d be okay on the food front :rotfl:

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

I have never made anything separately for my kid.She started eating whatever we were eating around the time she was a year old.She had lost interest in baby food and pureed textures. But sometimes there are some things I will make for her which we don’t eat…like mac n cheese,or pasta just tossed with butter or a partaha for lunch or rice for dinner if we are having roti and she has already had it earlier, she prefers rice anyways.Other than that whatever we are eating she eats it.There are things she doesn’t eat, like biryani..so on the rare occasions I make that,I always have something else for her most probably from last night or something.

Today she had her fried egg and toast with a glass of milk for breakfast.Lunch was a banana and watermelon.Snack was raisins and almonds.Dinner was refused (gave her daal chawal, which she actually likes).Tried telling her to have dinner a few ties (I don’t wanna be be woken up at 4 am…"Mama, let’s cook an egg.I am hungry’…:(..),but she is driving me nuts and not eating. So I am giving myself a break and browsing GS …

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

He eats whatever we are eating. Be it salan roti, pasta, rice, etc. We eat very mild and he has been eating regular food since he was six months (I would mash salan with steamed veggies back then). However, now just have to make sure it is in bite size pieces.

Today, he had early morning milk followed by strawberries a little later. Lunch was homemade Mac and cheese with peas (he has just learned to say peas and was very excited for them) followed by milk an hour later. Dinner was burgers/sandwiches.

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

Thanks Reha! It is hard work because you have to change your eating habits as well.
I will not say we don’t eat junk, we do (sadly) but it is not everyday all time thing.

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

Aaw man now I want garam halwa. And lasagna. Can I move in with you?

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

This made me want suji halwa too…with lots of raisins and coconut in it…!!

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

RV and Chipsie, that makes the three of you , wanting more “jee-ho” Suddenly sooji halwa sounds so chinese !

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

I guess its not a problem when you are not eating spicy food , but my husband and I are both spice lovers ! and that was putting my little one off his food .. So I had to find a middle path and now I make an effort to ensure baby’s food is as per his liking. For example , when I was making lasagna for us . I cooked the keema without chilli, in the end took out some keema for baby’s lasagna, added chilli in the keema for our dinner.

Then while putting together the lasagna, the same ingredients were used for baby’s lasagna too, just with some added kick , I shredded some carrots and added them in the potato mash and put a layer of it in the lasagna along with the keema and pasta . Just to ensure he eats balanced when he is eating .

Surely this much effort is ok and not over done

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

^totally makes sense.

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

I’ve blw my son, so he’s also always eaten what we’ve eaten, from 6 months old and mashallah it’s made him very unfussy and able to handle spices. In the beginning I reduced salt and spice in our food, or took his out before adding enough for our tastes, now he just eats as we eat. There are days he doesn’t fancy what’s on offer. But that’s no different to how an adults feels, so no big deal, he now stands in front of the fridge and tell me what he wants, and if all else fails butter roti it is.

Yesterday’s food was:

Breakfast: fried egg with brioche
Snack: Watermelon
Lunch: Coleslaw, lamb samosa and cucumber
Snack: Cheese
Snack: Fruit bar
Dinner: Offered paratha with rajmah (red kidney beans), he chose to eat 3 bowls of plain yogurt followed by grapes

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

Sometimes, my son just want to eat a bowl full of plain yogurt instead of what is cooked.

Re: Kiddie Corner : Aaj kya pakaya /khaya

^ lol me too. I love yogurt
