‘Kam-Kharch Bala Nasheen’… ‘A penny saved is penny earned’.
Such sayings exist in all cultures and languages. Still some cultures are extravagant or not pro-savings.
What factors do affect habit of savings?
Hindus of subcontinent believed in savings, whereas we don’t see Muslims of sub-continent considering savings that much important. Is it something related to religion?

savings should be 'need based' and NOT 'greed based'...Zardari, Nawaz et el are also saving but for the next 200 generations.
for instance, medical needs in India require you to save a 'big chunk' of money, shaadi byaah requires substantial savings and last but not the least education expense related savings are a must. Indians have to save a large amount based on their needs in the future. and oh yes, some money for retirement as well.
on the other hand, in Canada, we don't need to save for these expenses. we have free health care, free/government funded education, shaadi byaah is less expensive.
we need very little savings for our needs [at least in the near future]. we also don't 'HAVE' to save money for retirement as well because seniors get good amount of pension and old age security.

But do you think that people consider all these things while spending. If they think over such matters, we don't see extravagance. People in our part of world probably spend out of compulsion (including show off), but people in west also spend beyond needs at occasions like at the time of bumper sales during Xmas, etc.

over spending in the west is more like a habit and social trend which is not entirely needless. people wait for sale to go on or buy in bulk for future use. it's hardly ever for show-off here.

acutually sab baato ki aik baat humare societies me aik ka moo laal dekh ker khuda ka bado badi laal kerna buhat important hogaya hai .. and to be honest, ye baat zada larkiyo ke paai jaati hai ke aik ne agar apne ghar me kuch rakha hai to chalo us se zada na sahi to us jesa zaoror ho chahe zaroorat ho ya nahi bas kerna hai aur agar nahi kia husband ne mana ker dia to you are not good you are like this and that, i dont know how this will keep the relations.
to be honest, humare haan ye practice buhat aam hai auratein jab bhi ikathei ho ke baat kere gi kuch na kuch galazat ya issue zaroor uthe ga aap azmaa ke dekh le kabhi ..... i dont know yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
zaroorat se zada kharacha kerna just to show off, zaroorat se zada show off kerna, khaam khaa fazul kharchi kerna unwanted cheezo kel iye le le ke ikathek erte raho... khuda ki kassam hum sirf yehi khatam ker de to humare muashre me jitni behne aur betiya bina shadiyo ke zindagiy kharab ker rahi hain un ke sab ke ghar bas sakte hain but no, our nation will never had this feeling to cut short your pockets and help the needies... never ... :'(
