Re: Khewra Salt mines..
I went there as part of a school trip, for geography. It was pretty interesting, going down below and looking at the 'lakes' down below.
p.s. one of awaz's videos was shot down there. Theres also a mosque that they made out of the salted bricks, dont forget to take a picture over there.

Re: Khewra Salt mines..
spock, don't worry InshALLAH will take pics and try to post here... :)
One of my colleagues sent me pics of his trip to Khewra Salt mines a few weeks ago. Pretty amazing place and it's not really difficult to reach from Pindi/Lahore. I'll try to visit it too on my next Pk trip, Inshallah.
Yes we went in 2004. Was awesome. They have a majid and post office made of salt bricks. Was nice too because its so cool in temperature underground. Plus you can pick up big lumps of salt that fall of lorries outside the mines.
We also went to the cement factory by the mines. That was quite an eye-opening experience to see the people working in bad conditions filling cement bags without even wearing masks.

Re: Khewra Salt mines..
thx..inshallah now to plan the trip for nxt week
KHEWRA SALT MINES has a reference to the filming of a 1964 movie titled "JAAN PEHCHAAN" produced & directed by late Hameed Wyne which had Mohammad Ali as hero and Iranian Actress SHAH'PARA as heroine. It was during the filming of the movie in Khewra..that Ali Shahpara got engaged which however, could not culminate in marraige as Shahpara was not allowed by her parents back in Tehran.
KHEWRA SALT MINES inside the mine..has a beautiful mosque made of SALT and deep inside there is a SALT POND which has an overhead bridge to take you from one end to the other. Most of the shooting of the movie was done there.
CHAKWAL is a nearby place we drove from...and I talk of 1982.
Things must have developed much thereafter--but a place worth visiting!
Best,
Raju

^ Was that mosque there in 1982 too?
Re: Khewra Salt mines..
I have spent my childhood near khewra, and we used to attend school at khewra...the salt mine is really a worth seeing place...and I haven't seen it after 1995 but once saw on TV that there is great development there now...i think there is eating place in it also...back in our days there were not much facilities...but mosque was there since long, which is really very old and beautiful.
In past there used to be many accidents in salt mines...students on trip used to fell and die in those ponds ...hope there is much security now.
We just loved the mosque, the falling grapes, and most of all the interesting stories of the guide.
uzzybuzzy can you plz telll me the name of the cement factory that you saw during your visit to khewra salt mines? Actually my father has been working in one in that area...so just wanted to know which one you are talking about?
I think its best to reach there in the morning like 9-10am, so that you can get back to your city at night easily...as there are not some good places to eat and stay at night. also the conditions of the roads in the area are also not good.

Re: Khewra Salt mines..
Some of the historic stories behind this place are amazing. Did you guys know its said that Alexandar the great's horses discovered these mines when they were licking the rocks. Eventually the British took over these mines and started looking them with workers inside to make them work more. During a workers protest, about 10-15 of the miners were also shot by the British and their names and graves are still seen outside the entrance.
