If Kashmiris hasd a choice they would pick 'independence'.
Kashmiri's are quite secular in their outlook and dislike this growing extremism in Pakistan. So the attractiveness of joining Pakistan is decreasing each day. In time Kashmiris may start saying lets stay within the Devil (india) we know than the devil(Pakistan) we don't.
lol... How about just being free of the devil altogether?

Does Tibet want to be a part of china - No.
Do the Baloch want to be a part of Pakistan - No.
Do the Naga's want to be part of India - no. Nor do the Mizo's.
Do the norther Irish want to be a part of UK - No.
Does Taiwan want to become a part of China - No.
There are scores of countries which have populations wanting independence - Unfortunately this world is not perfect.
We all know that Kashmiri's prefer independence.
But will Government of India & Pakistan - give it up and make them independent.... no!

I have Kashmiri friends (from Muzzafarabad) and they're in favour of a state separate from both India and Pakistan.

Interesting thread. Learnt a lot - looks like there is real diversity of opinion on this issue. Personally have never met a Kashmiri muslim - couple of Saraswat brahmins were classmates eons ago - was too naive to ask intelligent questions at that time.
Kashmir is a beautiful place (from the 60s and 70s movies scenes). God bless Kashmiris, and God bless India and Pakistan (and the rest of the world).

that doesn't matter, they dont want to be called indian, its degrading living under the guns of indian troops.
you may say it doesn't matter but we think it matters. ironically it is what you say that doesn't matter because we are TODAY able to go visit the state of J&Kashmir and people of J&K inturn are able to travel to anyother state within India without a passport. I am speaking reality and you are speaking your opinion and unfeasible wish

That is not surprising. Being under Pakistani government control, if they say they want to be part of India they will probably get arrested.

During partition, Punjab was divided, Bengal was divided between India & Pakistan.
So could Kashmir. Make the LOC, into international border.
Both countries will be losers, but peace (& prosperity) will be the winner.

The only difference is that Punjab and Bengal were divided between two separate communities. Hindu, Sikh and Muslim. In Kashmir, the divide is between the same people, Kashmiri Muslims.
If you are suggesting that Kashmir be divided along the same logic as Punjab and Bengal were, then the Muslim majority areas of Kashmir should obviously be given to Pakistan, meaning Pakistan gets the Valley.

Overall, I think that the LOC should be made the border and Kashmir properly amalgamated into Pakistan as the 5h province. I don't think anyone except Zaid Hamid's "Yuth" believe that we can get the whole of Kashmir...

yes - both countries should just make the current border between India and Pakistan permanent.
