Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and government)

Extortion and kidnapping in the city is at such a level that businessmen are not safe even at their houses. Details of lawlessness and its impact are in the news item below.
In my view this is not as much of a problem as it has become. If it were just a lawlessness issue then it could have been dealt with easily. But in reality it is a political issue. This is happening due to complicity of police and lack of will of government to do something on this issue.

I think it is not an exaggeration to say that Karachi’s economy is at death throes. And since Karachi contributes more than 90% of Sindh’s revenues, death of Karachi’s economy will impact the whole province, and even across the whole country. Because Karachi’s business is shifting not just to other cities of Pakistan but also to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

This is similar to what happened after PPP’s first nationalization policy of 70’s. Majority of businessmen of the country belonged to Karachi (Parsis, Gujratis, Kathiawaris, Memons), and when the government usurped their industries then they stopped investing here and shifted their capital outside the country. This had disastrous impact on Pakistan’s economy.

Karachi becoming worst city for doing business, no option but to protest

KARACHI: Unbridled lawlessness and thriving Bhatta industry is resulting in making Karachi the worst city of doing business in Pakistan and traders are left with no option except a strong protest and silently leaving the city, said President All Pakistan Organization of Small Traders. and Cottage Industries ( APOST&CI), Karachi Chapter,** Mehmood Hamid**.

He said two Eids are the major business seasons for traders, but unfortunately they are also hay days for Bhatta collectors of Karachi who enjoy overt and covert support of the ruling political stakeholders. He said unlike old days now the Bhatta mafia openly operates in the city as police and law enforcing agencies do not take action against the big fish of this dirty business.

Whenever, traders make a big hue and cry, a few small timers are arrested and weak cases made against them, but the real makers and shakers of extortion industry in Karachi are never touched.

Hamid said after heartbreaking experiences of many years now the Karachi traders have decided that enough is enough. The major trader bodies like Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FPCCI) and the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) are determined to lodge a strong protest after the Eid.

He said all associations of markets and industrial estates in the city would participate in the protest, for which hectic contacts are in process to ensure a historic protest of Karachi traders.

He said though** the Sindh governor and chief minister** have assured the traders that they would order strict action against elements involved in extortion, kidnapping for ransom and other crimes, but the Karachi traders have a long experience of such government assurances, which he termed time-buying tactics.

Small traders’ leader said the law and order situation has deteriorated in the city to such an extent that now trader do not feel it safe to visit bank branches and ATM booths.

**He said delivery of goods to markets, factories and shops has also become dangerous and extortion mafia hijack the delivery vehicles at gunpoint and release them after the payment of extortion money.

He said this is the first time that extortion money is received even on the sacrificial animals**.

He said this is the worst display of the writ of government but the concerned authorities are still reluctant to take a firm action as lack political will to nab the real big fish behind this multi-billion sector.

Hamid said police reforms are necessary as the cops recruited on political grounds obey orders of their political heads and not their senior government officers.

He said there is a strong covert nexus between the organized criminal gangs and police stations and in most cases no action is taken against them and if even some arrests are made, very weak cases are lodged against them; therefore, conviction rate in these cases is negligible.

He warned if Karachi traders are not given protection it would result in disastrous situation for business and trade in the city.

He said big investors, industrials and tycoons have already shifted their capital to safer countries in the region including Bangladesh and Sir Lanka.

He said now they are some medium-sized and small traders who are in fact running the economy of the city and they are becoming disheartened due to the ever worsening law and order situation in Karachi and contemplating shifting their trade to other cities of Pakistan.

He said it is in the national interest to protest these traders so that the trade activities in the city are saved from a total standstill.

Re: Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

I think following is an important statement, because it shows the major reason of this mayhem:

"Hamid said police reforms are necessary as** the cops recruited on political grounds obey orders of their political heads and not their senior government officers"**.

Like I said, this is more of a political issue than a lawlessness issue.

Re: Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

**big investors, industrials and tycoons have already shifted their capital to safer countries in the region including Bangladesh and Sir Lanka

**:( and thats all they could do. Great topic Khoji.

Re: Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

^ do you have any other idea or option@SQ? Well,
The govt.is so foolish including MQM digging their own grave with this negligence and sad part is that we the common peoples are also in threat coz of these bezameer politicians. Allah hi hafiz hai Pakistan ka.

Re: Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

Eyesonsky, government has done its best to end pakistan in all ways it can. We have gorvt departments everywhere of almost every thing, they get salary every month, benefits, etc but what progress they make, which department of Pakistan proved itself. Just look at America, they work hard make more and better plans and apply them, build good buildings, roads, still work on making them better, but Pakistan only focus on areas used by the government high officials only, rest is all same what we got after partition from India. Now we are focusing on things when they have reached completely to an end even the education we get was old course which our fathers father had studied in the past, only little changes have been made in just past 3-4 years and thats it.

No progress ever was made, no problem ever got solve and today we are at this stage

Absolutely not an iota of shame from government or allies. A group of Somali pirates would run the country better.

Re: Karachi’s business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

:afshi:

:hayaa: Rehman Malik PhD.

I think his PhD stands for Phira Howa Dimagh :zobo:

Re: Karachi’s business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

PhD to Rehman Malik was a political joke.

But I think this is more of a provincial issue than federal. Rehman Malik doesn’t control police in the province.

Re: Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

This is why, in this cacophony, I am going to believe what traders say instead of politicians, whether PPP or MQM or ANP.

Re: Karachi’s business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

Re: Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

I personally interested to find out and do some business in Karachi regarding used Japanese small fishing boats but honestly I'm doing it with Myanmar (Burma) and having some calls from Bangladesh I'm afraid to do it with Pakistan. ヾ(@⌒ー⌒@)ノ

Re: Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

My boss brother all of sudden just wind up all his business and left Pakistan. It was really strange for him to leave like this cause his business was going better than his brother (my boss). Now we came to know that he left just because someone tried to kidnap his daughter from college and his family was getting mysterious phone calls, when they involved police in it they got in so much trouble that he decided to throw everything away and take his family to a safer place (outside Pakistan).

Re: Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

I don't have much problem with Rehman Malik being awarded a PhD. My issue is the reason he was awarded that PhD. Extreme shamelessness.

Re: Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

It is a very complicated issue .
It is not easy to blame any one for this , People are being killed since last 26 years continuously . Criminals are being protected by different powers . I am surprised that no one is going for improvement of the situation .

Re: Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

We saw that Hameed confirmed that this menace has roots in politics and political appointments in Sindh police.

Here is something more on this topic from another trader:

All Karachi Tajir Ittehad chariman Ateeq Meer told The Express Tribune: “No one is ready to do anything for us and it’s been ages since we [the business community] have been voicing our concerns. The government is doing little to alleviate our woes.”
He added, “The people who are harassing the business community are so brave that they storm into the shops, demand money and leave without any consequences. The culprits are mostly from Orangi, Katti Pahari and Lyari.
Gulbahar, Pakistan Colony, Burns road, Saddar, Kharadar, Meethadar, Keamari, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and many other business hubs of the metropolis are still under threat and the KCCI continues to seek government assistance without much response.

Re: Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

It's easy to make a sweeping two word statement on a complex situation. You have no idea what is happening and who is responsible.
So you need to keep your prejudices aside and talk only on the facts and figures.

About MQM, here is what I think. I have not had any bad experience with MQM or its workers, but I do believe stories about some MQM workers demanding 'chanda'. This chanda could be a form of bhatta if it is not voluntary. But MQM has been receiving such money since the beginnings in 80s, and yet traders started their protests only a few years ago.
It means that something new happened which made this bhatta stuff go through the roof. What was it?

If you are really interested in the plight of Karachi, instead of just making sweeping statements against people you dislike; then I would ask you to help do some research. Try finding out which year first protests against extortion and kidnappings were held in the city.

Re: Karachi's business is dying at the hands of extortionists (and police and governm

It really was shameful. I remember KU teachers were very angry when it happened. MQM used KU for its own political gratifications.
