Karachi stocks plummet over 1300 points - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

KARACHI: Stocks tumbled over 1300 points at the Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) 100 index, DawnNews reported.

The stocks fell over five per cent in the first two hours of the day’s trading, with the KSE-100 down 1310 points and trading at 28,126.38.

Analysts attributed the fall to political tensions and uncertainty as the days come near for the opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) to hold an ‘Azadi’ march in Islamabad on August 14 and the skirmishes of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) workers and police personnel in Punjab.

They assume that foreign investors may resort to pulling their businesses out of Pakistan due to the volatile situation.

The market is panicking. You shouldn’t
The article extract below was published in Dawn’s Sunday Magazine, August 10, 2014

The Karachi Stock Exchange is notoriously bad at judging the impact of political events on financial outcomes. That means that, for a politically sophisticated observer, market gyrations brought about by mass political protests or other political noise — such as those of this past week — can represent a fantastic buying opportunity.

Why is the market so bad at judging political events, you might ask? Because nearly all Pakistanis have been taught lies about our history, and our culture of keeping silent about inconvenient truths means that most people have not developed a world view that conforms to reality. This is why we believe in stupid conspiracy theories that basically all boil down to “we’re perfect and the whole world is jealous and out to get us”.

You may not think this matters to markets and investing, but it does. The KSE is more than just the physical stock exchange and its management. It is the 200 brokerage firms, their thousands of employees and hundreds of thousands of clients all making investment decisions simultaneously that results in a collective view of what they think the future holds. Any market is subject to the delusions and hysteria that grip its participants. In other countries, such delusions and myths tend to be about economic matters. In ours, the political and religious can be quite important as well.

Nonetheless, over the long run, the market is forced to reconcile with reality, because commerce trumps ideology for enough people enough of the time. That means that, while the short run can seem to validate those delusions held by the public, the long run will bear out the investment hypotheses of those who are aware of reality.

Re: Karachi stock market crashes 1300 points

Black money is being pulled out of the market, and the market is dropping back to reality. With several money whiteners over the past 3 years, the market was deluded with dirty money. It was overdue for a cleansing.

Re: Karachi stock market crashes 1300 points

It was all black money of the world.. and it is responsibility of IK and TuQ to not to let Pakistanies indulge in profit making habits… moreover, if these Pakistani got all the infra structure and TTP is crushed then what would IK had to sell in name of drone-dharnas??? no choran for him… hence he need to create agitation…

Keep it up… burn factories and businesses on your way to ISB… and if possible kill all police walas and anyone not agreeing to your agenda… the armed wing of PTI aka TTP would be there to accomplish this..

Re: Karachi stock market crashes 1300 points

I'm really surprised that a nuclear power doesn't have proper economists in chart of this sort of stuff working in conjunction with media and political parties to keep things calm.

Pakistan's leadership is totally dumb.

Another piece of evidence that TuQ and revolution mongering is an implant from outside powers - just another piece in the new Arab Spring. First one was done by the British and this Spring is also due to western influences.

When will Muslims learn.

Re: Karachi stock market crashes 1300 points

Thats no shock however extremely painful and sad. At a time when country is supposed to come out of black hole, its wise leaders (both opposition and govt) digged it down further.
So called opposition are so desperate to topple the govt just after one year that they dont care about what kinda human, financial and wutever loss the country has to go thru.
On the other hand govt is totally mishandling it.

On the top of it, unfortunately Pakistani people are so dumb that they dance on the flute of every stupid character and its hard to find few years without a chaos and turmoil.

So here we are once again. Another coming news could be the military taking over for next 11 years or so. I'm sure everyone will get peace then.

Re: Karachi stock market crashes 1300 points

A free market rises and falls due to a variety of factors…politics is a distant one. It could rise or fall during any tenure. But a market stuffed with black funds is always bound to fall. Look at historical KSE figures and you will find out,

Re: Karachi stock market crashes 1300 points

Comparing LSE and Toronto to KSE is funny. One LSE company could probably have more market capitalization than entire KSE. And secondly, protests happen in all democracies of the world. Nowhere are such protests tackled with in the way they have been done in Pakistan. The way PMLN has dealt with the long march is identical to how a monarchy or dictatorship would deal with it.

Re: Karachi stock market crashes 1300 points

Wut are you talking about?? Political turmoil has a lot to do with stocks.

Yes ofcourse there are other factors too. So many of them. But its all related to uncertainty. Any uncertain situation effects SE adversely.

If you need to know more let me know i'll provide you credible links explaining what are factors behind SE slumps.

I guess @Southie is more of a financial guru among us, he can explain it more.

Re: Karachi stock market crashes 1300 points

KSE is not, and has never been a ‘regular’ stock market. It is a market will very little transparency, and politics is a distant factor when it comes to making moves. Bulk of KSE’s volume is prop volume coming from members trading either on credit lines or black money. Retail participation is still very low. That is of course my personal observation, based on having been in the thick of things at the exchange for several years.

Re: Karachi stock market crashes 1300 points

PTIs protests have always been peaceful. I wont talk about PAT, as I dont follow the party. But regardless, dealing with protests in a proper manner is the govts responsibility. Just 3 days ago, a teenager was shot dead by police in the US, resulting in widespread riots, looting, destruction of property and what not. Trouble makers exist everywhere.. Its the job of an independent police department to tackle with them in a logical and calculated way......not make stupid decisions like blocking entire cities just to stop a march that will be passing through, and certainly not make decisions based on orders of PMs and CMs. Security departments are supposed to be independent, and make decisions that make sense to the wider population.

Re: Karachi stock market crashes 1300 points

If you dont understand the semantics of Pakistan’s stock market, I cant help it. The market was bound to fall…it was just looking for an excuse. You can call the long march an excuse if you want, and you can be mayoos all you want. Fact is, the levels at which the market stood were simply unsustainable. Again, look at the market cap of KSE, look at historical figures of the exchange, and then discuss.
