KARACHI: After the assassination of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, it has been reported that fatwas are being issued against Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Sherry Rehman, declaring her a non-Muslim and demanding death sentence for her.

Daily Times has learnt that the imam of Sultan Masjid has issued a fatwa and another has been published in a pamphlet and distributed by the Tanzeem-e-Islami (TI).

When contacted, Sultan Masjid Imam Munir Ahmed Shakir denied issuing fatwa against Sherry.

Shakir said he was not a mufti. “In my opinion, the facts are open about Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer’s murder, none should try to hatch conspiracies in this regard.”

He said everyone should remain in the limits of law and constitution. However, one who commits blasphemy would be sentenced to death under the country’s law.

He said he has been performing duties in the mosque since its establishment. It was being run under the supervision of Saudi military attaché and Defence Minister Sultan bin Abdul Aziz.

TI’s Karachi Ameer, Shujauddin Shaikh, told Daily Times that the organisation did not issue any pamphlet containing such a fatwa. The only one, which was issued by the TI, was a joint pamphlet issued by all components of the Tahafuz-e-Namoos-e-Risalat.

He said it was written in the pamphlet that the PPP government has hurt the feelings of the people by tabling a bill to amend the blasphemy law, through MNA Sherry Rehman, and made a committee under the chairmanship of minority affairs minister for the purpose.

“We have distributed the pamphlet and we own it. It is also available on our website. Sherry has demanded review of the whole process of blasphemy law, including punishment for the blasphemer,” he concluded.

When contacted, Sherry said the people who issued fatwas against her did not read what she asked for. “We are all Muslims, and you can’t be a Muslim without protecting the Prophet’s (PBUH) sanctity.”

She said the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was a struggle against injustice. “That is what we seek. What they are doing is pure incitement to violence.”

Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer has fallen victim to such a fatwa for raising voice for the weak and the poor. He pleaded the case of Aasia Bibi who was sentenced to death for allegedly committing blasphemy. Interior Minister Rehman Malik has suggested that Sherry must leave the country as her life is in danger.

The mufti sahib should be held and should be tried under section 307 of PPC, unless it is done, the practice will continue.. i doubt the PPP govt have got any spine to deal with the matter!!!

If the mufti in connection is denying it then why is Daily Times bent on claiming that he issued the fatwa?

So looks like "someone" is circulating a fatwa in name of TI and/or mufti in question to incite more violence or late Taseer's paper is now playing games here?

so Salmaan Taseer was a blasphermer to spak out about law so Sherry is bigger becoz she put the idea.
that Mr.Shakir are others are not so stupid to write clear in pamphlet KILL HER.

This is plain bu11$h¡t on part of Daily Times. They are spreading nothing but lies here. trying to create more chaos and unrest in the country. Even their whole news item is denying itself. When both the parties in question clearly denied it (and they themselves say this in this report), then whats the point of publishing and propagating this false alarm?

And this is just disgusting that a lot of our members start jumping with joy when they find any attempt to defame our deen, mullab bashing has become a fashion and trend.

I say its a poor call on on shami2k's part as well, to open up this thread with miss leading subject. The subject of this thread and the news item itself would be more appropriate if it say "fake fatwa being circulated, pakistanis beware" or something on these lines.

irrespective of how much a part of the society is irked on this issue and that they are simply not right and showing immaturity. this also shows the immaturity of such foreign media outlets and exposes their real motives.

though the person is dead, but the legacy he left behind continues to harm our deen and country... may ALLAH protect us from their cruel intentions and show us what is truth, not what these people want us to believe.

Karachi was once the heart of Liberalist Pakistan…

If this was a Ulema from Peshawar or Miainwali I would understand becuase those have always been fundamentalist heartlands and rural folk are very touchy about thier beliefs but for such a fatwa if it’s true to have come out of Karachi is most alarming :hmmm:

I am perhaps a former henchman of such Ulema but even I find it awkward to explain such fervour especially when directed at a politician who is a female.

Sometimes one might even feel pride taking out a target who was an open enemy of Islam and who was the foriegners cane, but few politicians these days are themselves direct tyrants more white collar criminals. That said while I do not sympathise with all such politicians who I blame for Pakistan’s poverty, however I dont understand any reason for killing Sherry Rahman much as I despise her for being a corrupt and ruthless politician.

All sides need to calm down just a little… :slight_smile:

Karachi has thousands of refugees from all over the country. There are hundreds of extremist mosques and madressahs present all across the city where they propagate intolerance and bigotry.
Taliban come to the city when they want to take vacations from their fasaad.

Sherry Rehman put the bill before Salman Taseer's murder (or probably even before his statement) so she would've been killed earlier if that was the case. I think someone is jumping at the joy of seeking full chaos in the country.
