A bit of trivia for you..Zobia!

Exactly where stands this beautiful structure of PSO…once…during early SIXTIES…stood a 20 apartment complex of The Pakistan Tobacco Company..where it had beautiful four bedroom apartment and a huge lawn…for its executives. That complex was the most known complex then…in terms of APARTMENTs lodging which was a bit rare…and a British concept from multinational companies.

Right next to the PSO building now…also stood COLUMBUS HOTEL with all its grandeur…and one of the best places I have had the privilege of celebrating new year eve…

KARACHI or KURRACHEE or KOLACHI…things on construction side as well as the landmarks and places which glittered—was mesmerizing!

Khush Rahein…and I am so glad we have topics as such to discuss on GS… which is definitely required…!

Re: KARACHI-KURRAACHEE-KOLACHI

o wow uncle thank you for the information…i actually took the pic while car was moving. i was amazed to see its glory to decided to share it.

lemme share more here and you can share more info about them.

Sind Medical Centre (the way centre is written actually triggered me post this pic here…i mean to highlight maintainess that can ppl actually trust these centre who dont even bother to place the name on its right place)

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3211/3084693679_5882fefa45.jpg

I have seen it umpteenth times--Zobia...in fact that's my daily passageway to office when I drive down from my Clifton complex.

Once i even reminded my cousin..a Doctor (ENT Specialist) who has a clinic there---but somehow, *the note for resurrecting the word "CENTRE" alongside its budget involving costs/fixture etc., has not met the eyes of the administrator! **A typical disdain of our S&GAD (Services & General Administration System)...*

SMC site was a house of a parsi..built in 1890. His name was Ardeeshir Pestonjee. He migrated to India and left the house aloof..till Bomi Khambata..came up and got the paper work done as Evacuee Property and to turn it into a Parsi Home For The Old....but the area being of certain logistic involved to develop important road...at that side...was dropped...though the road never came up! but SMC did...after 30 years of all that!

Some bare realities.....I should say so.

Khush Rahein..

Re: KARACHI-KURRAACHEE-KOLACHI

ok there is a trivia for u uncle (well honestly i have no idea what this building is this, so i will trust ur words anyways)…so tell me about it…i think its near clifton-defence (dont know) but what i know is they are near teen-talwar. and there are so many huge houses exist there.

Hey Zobia...Uncle ko pareshaan kar rahee ho:)??

I think this recently renovated house on the format of old brick houses.. is located in BATH ISLAND-Clifton.

CLIFTON starts right after the bridge..a.k.a LOVER'S BRIDGE since 1945 when it was built.

**If you are coming from Clifton beach...just before the incline of the bridge when you turn left you see a store in the left hand corner...one of the most popular and famous ones of yesteryears known as BRIDGE STORES. You pass by it.....and go deep in the area where BATH ISLAND starts which in 50's had the bungalows of Government Servants of higher grade. My mamoon I.A.Khan s/o Nawab Ismail Khan of Meeruth, the right hand man of Quaid-e-Azam, lived there as he was Deputy Secy. Works in 1957. He was an ICS. **

Now a few houses of that category, shape and style are left..which are most occupied by Govt servants only...besides there are rest houses and residences of Judges, Chief Justice and Federal Govt.

A little that area...is the place where some beautiful houses of old archietecture still exsist of which the famous one is CANNAUGHT HOUSE which has about ten beautiful apartments---which belong to SHELL (Pakistan) where my cousin Hasan Madani also stayed. He is currently Country Head-SHELL, Sri Lanka.

CANNAUGHT HOUSE surroundings has many beautiful bungalows of PARSIs and also a huge complex of Sultana Siddiqui of HUM TV where she also has her daughter-in-law's MOOMAL productions office.

This house is around that area of BATH ISLAND...the historical residential area of Karachi....of 1940's....unless its some place which has not been caught by my gunahgaar eyes!

Khush Rahein...

Re: KARACHI-KURRAACHEE-KOLACHI

just a random karachi shot

This is NBP Cricket Ground nose front to the Abdullah Shah Ghazi roundabout going towards Khayyaban e Shamsheer from Park Towers...half way between.

This cricket ground was acquired by my father when he was in National Bank of Pakistan years back (he retired in 1989)....as SEVP and member Executive Board.

A famous TV artiste ASLAM LATTAR who died some years back---was the famous sportsmen of NBP and was incharge of the project for a while.

The Indian cricket team once practiced here. It has a great pitch and good facilities on sports.

Hats off to President NBP-Ali Raza s/o Hashim Raza for giving special attention to this ground.

THE REPORT ON FOUNTAIN BEING OPERATIONAL FROM SUNDAY…is INCORRECT.
IT BECAME OPERATIONAL FROM SATURDAY EVENING… I SAW IT WHILE I SAT ON THE BALCONY DOING MY WORK ON MY LAPTOP.

January 19, 2009 Monday Muharram 21, 1430
DAWN

KARACHI: KPT fountain made operational

KARACHI, Jan 18: After remaining inoperative for some months, the multimillion rupee computerised fountain built by the Karachi Port Trust was made operational on Sunday night.

The fountain was rendered dysfunctional after last year’s monsoon when some of its parts were found missing.

KPT Chairperson Nasrin Haq told APP that a section of the media reported that the fountain had been stolen which was not true.

She explained that only a few parts were stolen. The fountain had been made operational after replacement of the stolen parts that cost Rs400,000.

She said that she took serious notice of the incident, ordered immediate inquiry and took action besides ordering the engineers to carry out rectification work which they completed a few days back.

She said the fountain would operate on Saturdays and Sundays from 6pm till midnight.

A symbol of prominence, the 620-foot-high KPT fountain jet installed on the Oyster Rock at a cost of Rs224 million was again operative at night for beach visitors and tourists to witness an extravaganza of light and water, she said.

The chairperson said that colourful fountain was visible from the Sea View, as it was powered by 18 flood lights of 400 watts each. A powerful diesel engine pumped sea water continuously at the rate of 200 litres per second through nasals, she added.
