Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

This is based on some recent incidents I observed / experienced.

(1) My Khala came from a town in rural Sindh to visit us in Karachi. My sister took her to visit an aunty in neighbor. The aunty is from Urdu speaking family, whose in-laws are settled in Sukkur. The aunty asked my Khala ‘aap Sindh se aai hain?’. My Khala said ’ Ye bhi to Sindh hi hai? Aunty said ’ Ji.. per yahan ke log aisa nahin mante’. In reply Khala said ‘kisi ke manene na manene se kia hota hai’. When I came home my sister told me all that and I was :smack:

(2) A day before Eid holidays, some colleagues asked for lift. While I was driving the discussion between guys was going on: ‘aap ne janwar khareed lia’? ‘aap Bar B Q karenge’, ’ Hum UP walon main to Qorma banta hai’, ‘Hamare Bihari kabab to sab ko pata hain’. The discussion moved and someone asked me ‘Aap Eid pe Sindh jao ge’? :bummer:

Whats with this perception? Sometimes I can’t determine who is the addressee of slogans on Karachi’s walls ’ Karachi hamara hai tumhara nahin’?

Then we keep on hearing ‘Iss shehr ka koi wali waris nahin’?

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

Sad indeed.

But i have always heared, interior jao gay- never heard *tum sindh jao gay.

*

Exactly I always heard interior sindh aswell,
And those who said only 'sindh' may be they also meant 'interior sindh' ?

And by saying hum UP wale is like someone would said hum Lahore wale or I always say hum Karachi wale.

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

may kon sa wala haun :bummer:

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

The same things people can observe in South Punjab, if a person goes from Multan to Sahiwal, the people say that "ABC has gone to Punjab". I don't think this matters much.

App Guppie Howe

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

I doesn't matter when people don't segregate with intentions. As I told my Khala had to hear this 'hum to nahin mante'. This is where problem starts and people feel alienated.

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

People don't have problem when they are asked 'aap interior Sindh se aa rahe ho' or 'interior Sindh ja rahe ho'. They agitate like my khala did.

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

I think when people are in Karachi, they keep on calling themselves UP Wala, Delhiwala, etc for distinguishing themselves from other Karachi walas, but when they are outside Karachi / Pakistan, they refer to themselves Karachiwals. Probably there they find actual UP wala and Delhiwalas :p

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

This thing I dont understand, I personally dont consider the generation of Urdu speaking people to be mohajers now. Their parents were, no doubt! But now they are Karachiites, and I think they should affiliate more with the city and the province where they are now.

One of the house owners (this was Islamabad) of my aunt used to tell her "hamaray India main aisay hota tha, hamaray India main waisay hota tha". My aunt asked her: Do you have relatives in India? she said "yes". She then asked her if she was better of or her relatives, and she acknowldeged she was much better off than her relatives there. Anyways to each his own.

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

Yes why not? When people from Afghanistan and Iran came in Sindh and owned the land, why can't people who are Karachiites by birth can own the land. Difference of language doesn't matter as is the case with Baloch tribes who learned local language besides keeping their ancestors language (with minor changes) and now very well assimilated in Sindhi society.

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

It has a lot to do with how Muhajirs are treated like step kids in this city.
Some Sindhis get government jobs based on quota when they're not even qualified for it.

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

WHy isn't Sindhi an optional subject at school?
A person living in Karachi never needs it and thus resents being forced to learn it.

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

If we go in that direction this will turn into a political discussion, but can you please give me the names of Sindhi ministers in Pakistan's first federal cabinet, when Karachi (part of Sindh) made federal capital?

This city provides employment to people from all over Pakistan.

Lol @ step kid

Tell me about it.

There are many school where they don't teach Sindhi subject.

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

How do you think they are treated as step kids? As far as people from outside the city see, the city seems well under the control of Urdu speaking people.

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

Do you know it was compulsory for British officers appointed in Sindh (including in Karachi)?

This is another complaint that people of Sindh have that their language was not given priority and respect from the first day of Pakistan. When Sindhis can learn Urdu, why can't Urdu speaking people learn the language. Its also good to know a new language, because it enrich your own language. Learning Sindhi can bridge up the gap between Sindhi bolne wale Sindhi and Urdu bolne wale Sindhi.

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

Majority of Sindhi school of the city at the time of partition were closed / converted to Urdu medium schools.

Re: Karachi - Identity & Ownership Crisis

Muhajirs came to Pakistan from different parts of India. It includes all kind of people and yes also differ in culture too. Majority were from UP and East Punjab(dehli etc ). when they meet with others they tell their roots. It is like when you visit Islamabad, or any foreign country, you most probably mention your recent residence Karachi , and Pakistan respectively.

In case of your Khala's incident, Urdu speaking aunty is wrong. I believe interior is most appropriate word. Karachi, Hyederabad, Sukkhar and many developed cities of Sindh considered Urban areas, while villages are interior Sind.
