During my interaction with Kanjars in Lahore, I learnt that some of them send their daughters up to 2-year college, with an aim of getting them more sophisticated so they can attract ‘better’ clientele. Shokeen Louk (interested people) look for a well-spoken Kanjri… I think distinction was not made earlier (however the review posted by Old Lahori touches upon that distinction), the whole business of prostitution has two distinct elements (Kanjars and Mirasi)…Mirase are purely musicians (we will talk about that some other time, as I was trained by a Tabla Nawaz from Hira Mandi) and don’t engage in sex related activities. Kanjars on the other hand primarily are in dancing, but do sex on the side, only with a select group of customers. Then you have Gashtis (low-level hookers, that only do sex..no dancing). So, I was saying that yes, some of them do send their girls to college, but don’t let them study beyond that, for the fear of them becoming too ‘independent’.

It is a world of fascinated idiosyncrasies… My only wish is that Pakistani government will leave them alone and let them do what they know best. It is so sad to see that we are so eager to claim our talents as ours ‘e.g., Malka-e-Tarum Noor Jahan, blah blah blah…..but never admit that they were products of Kanjars. A gift of Kanjars.

I don't believe that the sociology of either sex or prostitution is very well understood despite tomes having been written on the topic. Evolutionary it is clear that the primate societies have surprised us as to how they display amazingly similar behavior. I found it hard to believe at first that some of the females of the alpha male chimp will indulge in "extra-marital" sex by subterfuge, and that on occasion the alpha male will allow other males to have sex with his females for favors of food and stuff. How much of this is built into our genes we do not know yet. It is quite clear though that for survival purposes a tribe cannot allow its "endorphin" centers to develope by out of control sex. They probably lose the efficiency to be violent and to fight to protect themselves. And hence a lot of prohibition on sex. Experiments on rats, or behavior of many drug addicts clearly show that an individual can get into physically destructive situations if he/she loses control over stimulating the "pleasure centers" of the brain. Rats will allow their tails and feet to burn to keep pressing a lever that stimulates their endorphin centers.

Seems like Kanjars get the flack for operating out of same place as the pro's (there definitley is (or was) a red light area in Heera Mandi.

Interesting thread.

I do not know much about the Kanjar Community in Lahore, actually I don't know much about Lahore, but I distinctly remember a family acquaintance working on a documentary production (foreign media) of the Shahi Mahalla a couple of years ago. The censoring of the community within the Pakistani society is amazing, considering its cultural and historical significance.

Was Anarkali a Kanjri?
