Taliban claim attack on Minhas base; nine militants killed | DAWN.COM
**ATTOCK: The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for an attack on a Pakistani military airbase early Thursday, which left 10 people dead, including a soldier, and damaged at least one Air Force aircraft.
**
The militant assault renews questions about security at key military installations, particularly at a base which has been attacked before.
Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed nine heavily armed TTP militants stormed the PAF Minhas airbaseat Kamra, located about 70 kms from the capital Islamabad in Punjab’s Attock city, sparking an intense gun battle lasting almost five hours.
“The attack was launched from two different sides. A team of four members entered from one side and five from the other and than they launched a collective attack inside the camp,” Ehsan told Dawn.com, speaking from an undisclosed location, confirming that all nine attackers were killed in the assault.
The militant spokesman further claimed that they had achieved their targets and killed “more than a dozen security personnel” inside the base.
PAF officials also confirmed all nine militants had been killed, however, they said only one Pakistani soldier, Mohammad Asif, had lost his life in the attack.
The Taliban spokesman also claimed the attackers had destroyed three JF-17 thunder aircraft as well.
PAF officials said that only one of aircraft at the base was damaged in the attack.
Several squadrons of fighters and surveillance planes are believed to be housed at Kamra’s Minhas base. Officials also confirmed that over 30 planes were parked at the base, including state-of-the-art JF-17 Thunder fighter jets.
The airbase is a heavily guarded compound with the air force’s Kamra Aeronautical Complex also in its vicinity, where Pakistan assembles and overhauls JF-17 Thunder fighter jets in collaboration with China. According to reports, at least 11 Chinese engineers were working at the Kamra Aeronautical Complex.
All Chinese and others foreign engineers and technicians involved in co-production of Chinese and Pakistan JF-17 Thunder aircraft project were shifted to a high profile secure location, official sources told Dawn.com, adding that the engineers were not present near the attack area.
**Early morning attack
**
Although the attack took place at about 2 am, it is likely many of the soldiers on the base were awake for prayers or breakfast during the fasting month of Ramazan.
“The base has been cleared. The operation has been completed,” a PAF spokesman said after over five hours of fierce gun battle between militants and Pakistani military commandos.
Although the TTP spokesman claims the militants attacked the base from two sides, it was not clear how the attackers managed to enter the sprawling base.
The gunmen disguised themselves in uniforms armed with automatic weapons, grenades and suicide vests, the air force said.
“Other miscreants then fired RPGs from outside the base boundary wall. As a result one PAF aircraft got damaged,” it added in a statement.
Special Forces and police were scrambled to the scene. Gunfire, rocket and hand grenade explosions were heard during heavy clashes. One officer told news agency AFP that he saw flames after waking up for his pre-dawn meal.
“There was an announcement by megaphone for soldiers not to move from the barracks and we were forbidden from going to the area where I saw the fire,” he said.
“The attackers were wearing security force uniforms but I can’t specify of which force uniform they were wearing,” he added. “One body of a suicide bomber strapped with explosives has been found close to the impact area.”
Base commander, Air Commodore Muhammad Azam, who led the operation against the attackers, was wounded, but is in stable condition, said the spokesman. One other security official also received injuries.
**Revenge for bin Laden’s death
**
Taliban spokesman Ehsan claimed the militant organisation had carried out the attack “to avenge the deaths of Osama bin Laden, the TTP Amir Baitullah Mehsud and other fighters who had been killed by the Pakistani security forces.”
Pakistani forces are fighting a challenging war on their soil against Islamist militants based, including al Qaeda and its offshoots and Pakistan’s own version of Taliban militants.
The spokesman claimed the Taliban would continue to target security installations “until the establishment of a true Islamic state in Pakistan.”
**Investigations ordered
**
Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt has ordered investigation into the incident.
The Air Chief Marshal summoned a meeting today at Air headquarter Islamabad to analyse the situation after the attack and to mull over the initial intelligence reports. The meeting would be attended by top leadership of Pakistan Air Force.
Chief of Kamra aeronautical complex and Base Commander will brief the meeting.
The government and military’s top leadership, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaque Pervez Kayani and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf were notified of the attack, and the operation was being closely monitored by the army chief.
President Zardari strongly condemned the attack and expressed government’s resolve to eliminate terrorism.
**Intel of possible attack
**
In recent weeks, military intelligence had warned of the possibility of such an attack on military installations. However, there was no specific information about an attack being targeted at the Kamra base.
This is not the first time that Kamra has been the target of a militant attack. On Oct 23, 2009, a suicide bomber blew himself up at the entrance of the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex in Kamra. Two security officers and six other people were killed in the attack.
Last year, six Taliban gunmen attacked a naval base in Pakistan’s biggest city Karachi to avenge the killing of Osama bin Laden. At least 10 military personnel were killed and 20 wounded in the 16-hour assault.

I'm glad they were able to send these scumbags to hell without much damage but this should have never happened. IF the intelligence was precise these rats should have been stopped/killed without them breaching the outside perimeter.

Bannu jail escapees involved in this attack?
Dunya News: Pakistan:-Bannu Jail escapee among Kamra attackers …
The interior ministry suspected involvement of Bannu Jail escapees in Kamra attack.
The Ministry of Interior has suspected the involvement of dangerous Taliban terrorist Adnan Rasheed in Kamra air base attack that left nine terrorists and a security official dead Thursday.
According to the report, a brazen attack on the Bannu prison was carried out in April to free convicted terrorist Adnan Rasheed, along with 400 other prison inmates after which it was advised to beef up the security of military installations and VIPs.
The report had also elucidated that Adnan Rasheed was an ex-PAF employee and had information about the air bases and highly sensitive installations.
Militants dressed in uniforms and armed with guns and rocket launchers stormed PAF base Kamra, sparking heavy clashes that left nine militants and a security official dead while a plane was also damaged.
The base commander, who led the counter-attack, was also injured in the battle.
The security forces completed the operation after hours of attack while all the dead attackers were identified as foreigners.

Has Rehman Malik confirmed the exact no of casualties on both sides?
Re: ‘Terrorists planning attack on PAF base’
These terrorists did not even care for the sanctity of one of the holiest nights of Ramazan. They attacked the Kamra Airbase and killed a soldier. Our condolences go out to the family of the brave man killed protecting his country. We congratulate the Pakistani military for foiling the attack and killing the terrorist with minimal damage to the base. Our prayers are with those who were injured, including the base commander. We wish them a quick recovery.
Terrorists are the biggest enemy of the state today. They want to see an unstable and defeated Pakistan. We stand with Pakistan in solidarity against all forms of terrorism and support them in their quest to bring peace in the region.

Re: Kamra Airbase attacked
In a country where Taliban and other inhuman animals roam around freely in large parts of the country and supported by a large portion of population, what do you expect the army or those agencies to do for preventive measures?
^ you and I are talking in very different directions.
What I really tried to say is that Taliban and their ideology is like a virus in Pakistan that is there due to sympathy and support of the people, those people even appreciate it when this virus hurts others and complain only when it hurts them.
And your statement that this war is going for 12 years without a solution validates my point, it is because it is not the job of army alone to wipe out Taliban and their ideology, they will never go away as long as people are supporting and sympathising with them.
Don't you live in Pakistan to know that?
How do I know? I have talked to people who come from areas ruled by Taliban, I know it from molvis in Pakistan, I have found it from local newspapers that more number of people sympathise with Taliban compared to army.
Remember how many people came out to protest OBLs killing?
Tribal areas is not "large population" of the country. Besides, they really are not supported as much, its just that they are armed too well to be opposed, they are brutal they kill their opposition easily and due to lack of law enforcement they get away with it without a problem.
Re: Kamra Airbase attacked
TTP claiming responsibility, whats new? The plan of their attack was "leaked" but they still went ahead with the plan, what does that tell you? No, it does not tell you that they are "brave" but that they are on foreign agenda showing to the world how "strong these militants are" that despite their plan leakage they can still strike at sensitive areas in Pakistan, oooh the nukes are unsafe.

CENTCOM uncle. Please respond ![]()
Re: Kamra Airbase attacked
You seem to have been disappointed to see TTP claiming responsibility. Why is that? Is it because now it is difficult to make conspiracy theories involving CIA, RAW, Mossad, etc.?
Re: Kamra Airbase attacked
Why should Americans respond at all? It is our shi*. Our problem.
Even imran, whom many conspiracy theorists support, says that this incidence is the result of operation in Waziristan. Even though I disagree with what he implies by saying this, but at least he acknowledged that it was Taliban doing it, and that Taliban are not controlled by anyone including America.
Bringing nukes here is like what they call in Urdu “chor ki daarhi mein tinka”. If these attacks raise questions about nuke security then we need to ensure that these attacks don’t happen. And for this to achieve, we need to make Pakistanis understand that Taliban and all kinds of extremism is BAD for the country. So stop all those Taliban apologists like Imran and Nawaz, who provide justifications for such attacks, go to rallies organized by extremist banned organizations, and call them their brothers.
Pakistan is in great danger due to extremism. And the first step to solve this problem is to first acknowledge that the problem exists. Just putting our head in sand and blaming others will not make the prolem disappear. This attitude will cause Pakistan to continue on the path to destruction.

Basically what has happened is this:
Pakistan grew snakes in its backyard and threw them at its neighbours house but those snakes are now biting Pakistan.

^ Need I remind you who else sponsored these snakes to help with their agenda? Sirf Pakistan per ungli mat uthao.

While I agree with what you are saying a lot of snake charmers from ashores afar came and started looking after these snakes and using them for their various evil designs. I know it is difficult for some to fathom this but this is also as much true as your statement.
Re: ‘Terrorists planning attack on PAF base’
Yes, unfortunately most of the military, especially the Army/ISI are just interested in land, money and power.

Pak Intelligence is rubbish.
If these type of attacks were committed in the US,UK, etc, the CIA would be disbanded.
ISI officers are only interested in money and killing unarmed journalists.

Why did they not disband them after they had undeniable and 200% proof that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

How is that when they had intelligence report of this attack 6 days before actual attack? Its the failure of institutions who should be utilizing these reports and acting on 'em.
