These three species have gone away or died in Lahore.. in my childhood we used to have titlian and gulherian all over our place - whereas, gugnus were like stars in our hedges.. I was trying to show my son what jugnu was - and wasnt able to find one.. titlian are rare and gulherian all gone.. I travel in remote places of Punjab and even there thes ethings are extinct.. I was stold that insecticide sprayes have destroyed them.. it would become like fairy tales to kids in future.. what a loss!

they are in plenty ..in** Nasir Bagh**....at Kachery stop...near Punjab Secretariat....opposite to Government College Lahore....you will find plenty of them there...

Allso in Bag-e-Jinnah...in Shadman...there are a large no. of Gulaihrees..also Titliya....

Jugnoo...sorry..i have myself never seen it....but i think..if you will try to have chance to Bagh-e-Jinnah in night of summer..i think..you can find some of them....

entomological ecosystems are really delicate, so are the life cycles of squirrels when their habitats are destroyed. lahore has been turned into a disappointment - mindless building and development, over congestion, row homes in narrow streets, dirty roadways, open sewers in less affluent areas, unprotected wires and poles, thoughtless sprawl of industrial zones and no clean open space. city planning anylonger is a challenge for the current generation of civil engineers. may people realize that without plants and animal life around, human existence will become difficult even not possible, if this is the manner in which city space is jumbled up. forests and trees are not replenished with new seedlings. land is exhausted by yearly sowed crops and then it becomes barren.

what could be canals and streams of water ways and rivers have turned into pools of industrial waste and puddled contaminated water, if it does not rain. of course, the climate due to increasing heat and immense pollution caused by vehicles and their exhuasts, have further compromised the natural life cycles in urban development of a city like lahore.

remedy: consistently practiced small steps in every day tasks at work and in homes and on streets by living simpler lives & natural living can go a long way in at least containing the damage if not reversing it. but, it can only happen when there are like minded and intended people who care for the extinction of floral and animal life.

In liberty ..Gulberg and Shah Aalmi Market even at Ferozpur Road...industralist ..are mad ..in rising 11 11 storeys buildings....until SC took notice ..and riased MasoodHospital ..down to ground....

Bank Lesing have flooded the Lahorev roads..with alrming pollutions.....interest based cars have swollen us ...religiously ..and socially..and civically as well....

If your car is on road like Ferozpurnear about 3 or 4 pm..just prepare your Iftari..right in the car !!!!!

Mian Amir Mahmood ..Lahore Nazim is doing well..but exansion of city..and chor bazari..of LDA...PWD..and other departments ...is on its way also....

only SC can do something to relief us..after Allah Almighty...

We used have jugnos in our place in pindi...we used to catch them in our hand and then let them sit in our hand and just shine their a***** off!

Jugnos are much rarer now im presuming!

but seriously, yeah, i discovered these insects at my nana's home in karachi. these things look like ladybirds but are velvety to the touch.

speaking of this disappearance of squirrerls, fireflies and butterflies, has the same phenomenon affected lizards, roaches and flies in pakistan. cuz they seem to be everywhere

true...an example fo this is when someone stops to tie hsi shoelaces, stray cats and dogs in the vicinity run away..because experience has taught them that when a human stops and reaches towards his feet, he is going to pick up a rock and hurl it at them.

I think it's due to an over growth of Mullah species in Lahore. It is an extremely hostile species, notorious for not getting along with native eco systems. It was imported from Middle East back in the 1800's along with Hukkah and Egyptian Cotton.

I visited Lahore after 17 years and couldn't move around town due to the rise of Mullahs. They were setting McDonalds and other stuff on fire as usual.

It is indeed a loss. I wonder where all the things that once brought us closer to nature are gone. yeah ... you can really see the difference once you move to the west. here squirrels are just hopping around ppl and you can get pretty close before they move away. I grew up in a village and over there a squirrel would jump up the nearest tree as soon as it saw someone getting anywhere closer than 15 meters and would stay on the other side of the trunk so you can't see it. if you moved to that side, it would change its side to stay hidden. same thing with rabbits, if they saw a human, they'd run as fast as they could until they were at least a good 500 meters away. Out here they are just eating grass a few meters away from ppl and no one cares or runs after them. Mind you, a good number of them get run over when they try to cross the road in a hurry.

Thanx for the observations.. impact of environment may be at different levels in Pakistan.. i live in medel town lahore which is comparitively a greener part of town and has maintained its green impact remarkably.... in one generation there has been a marked change in the species I mentioned.. I usually spend the eve in my garden with kids.. As I mentioned, there seems to be no jugnus (firefly) and butterflies are so rare - they used to be filled in our place with so many amazing colors.. squirrels are are too..
