jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

These three species have gone away or died in Lahore.. in my childhood we used to have titlian and gulherian all over our place - whereas, gugnus were like stars in our hedges.. I was trying to show my son what jugnu was - and wasnt able to find one.. titlian are rare and gulherian all gone.. I travel in remote places of Punjab and even there thes ethings are extinct.. I was stold that insecticide sprayes have destroyed them.. it would become like fairy tales to kids in future.. what a loss!

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

^ no loss

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

I feel the same loss for my kids as well. They will probably see these things in books and television only.

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

It is indeed a loss. I wonder where all the things that once brought us closer to nature are gone. That reminds me one of the songs by Nayara Noor which goes...
hamain rangon kay jugnoo, roshni ki titlian aawaz detee hain
Naye din ki musaafat rang main
doobi hawa kay saath khirki say bulaati hai
Kabhee ham khoobsoorat thay

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

now u mention it, I remember the first time when I went to Pak as a kid I was totally fascinated by these jugnus. Haven't indeed seen them the last few times when I was there. Pity...

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

Hey Min, I think thats too fast a transition from jugnus and titliyan to Nayyara Noor. Tell me honestly, did you really need an excuse to post these lines here? :--p

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

Surprisingly sub-urban areas of Karachi are not short of at least tiltian and gulherian. After recent rains in July and August, there are plenty of butterflies seen roaming over natural flora of Karachi.

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

I think you can see plenty of squirrels around garden area?

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

^ Bill well, you had to criticize me as always, its been a while, haina :p
teetli and jugnu, gulehri reminds me of days gone by and this song just transports one to another world. Feels as if there is a systematic rape of the natural environment due to rampant urbanisation and senseless deforestration.

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

When I was living in Islamabd in 1990-1992, I saw plenty of jugnus everynight over there.

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

There used to be a time in Karachi when after heavy rains, one could see that lovely silky red insect called "beer booti". Recently I saw it on the outskirts of Karachi after August's rains.

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

not really Mostaar, kahan? I remember seeing squirrels last when I was at KU.
In suburban areas, yes one can find all hashratul arz and flora becasue of the unadulterated environement but hardly anymore in the centre of the city.
Now that you have reminded me of this, I remember seeing all these things at our farm near Baqai. Ahh, memories...

Islamabad is just so different from Karachi or for that matter Lahore.

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

Have you ever seen a beer booti?

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

You can still see gilherian in the National Muesum, the Polo ground and in the zoological garden.

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

yes! I guess they could be seen in the urban centres uptil few years back.

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

hmm, well I am thinking of taking my students to the museum in interior Sindh in Jamshoro. If that doesn't materialize, I will take them to the National Museum.

haan Zoological garden could be the place but it is in a deplorable state.

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

entomological ecosystems are really delicate, so are the life cycles of squirrels when their habitats are destroyed.
lahore has been turned into a disappointment - mindless building and development, over congestion, row homes in narrow streets, dirty roadways, open sewers in less affluent areas, unprotected wires and poles, thoughtless sprawl of industrial zones and no clean open space.
city planning anylonger is a challenge for the current generation of civil engineers.
may people realize that without plants and animal life around, human existence will become difficult even not possible, if this is the manner in which city space is jumbled up.
forests and trees are not replenished with new seedlings.
land is exhausted by yearly sowed crops and then it becomes barren.

what could be canals and streams of water ways and rivers have turned into pools of industrial waste and puddled contaminated water, if it does not rain.
of course, the climate due to increasing heat and immense pollution caused by vehicles and their exhuasts, have further compromised the natural life cycles in urban development of a city like lahore.

remedy: consistently practiced small steps in every day tasks at work and in homes and on streets by living simpler lives & natural living can go a long way in at least containing the damage if not reversing it.
but, it can only happen when there are like minded and intended people who care for the extinction of floral and animal life.

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

Well we have plenty of all three where we live. Infact if you like I can send out some, especially those annoying little squirrels who always decide to cross the road while you are driving by and then stop in the middle right in front of your car double minded whether they should move ahead or return  You have to take more care of them than pedestrians, nawaab ki aulaads. Jugnu’s we get in summers, lots of them, any where there r trees and grass, looks so darn pretty. we have butterflies between spring and fall too.

Alhamdolillah.

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

^ nashukri aulaad
^ thankless child :p

Re: jugnu, titlian aur gulherian

Gulaihri...such a funny word!!!
