I’ll graduate in July, insha. with a 2.1 (History), and am so fed up with everything here, I just need a complete change in location, ect.
My speciality (well ok, my final yr project) focuses on US Foreign Policy in the Truman years, and most my modules are American History ones. Will that help me find a job there?
Or do you all recommend that I do my MA, boost my CV, and then later apply to the US?
^ abay a 2.1 in UK is something very different than a 2.1 in US.
as far as only job being that of a teacher with a degree in history is utter BS, museums, research fundations, think tanks etc all have opportunities for history majors. I alos know of history majors who went into consulting and banking.
legbreak...what are you looking to do, because dependin on what you want to do the answers may be different.
Majoring in history means nothing. Depends on the school. If you come from a good school, you an still get into most industries. I had english majors working along side me in banking and philoshophy majors in consulting.
Oh excuse me i wasn’t aware of the grading system in the Uk. Thanks for pointing that out I didn’t say that tteaching is the ONLY job available for History majors, but rather it’s the primary career path most history/English majors decide to embark on after graduating. I’m sure there’s a multitude of jobs and careers available for those majors…
Job wise, I just dont know. Thats the problem, I have no career plans. I shadowed staff at a school for 6 weeks (2 days a week) and it was pretty ****e. Not teaching, I need something else.
Maybe teaching in America would be different?
I'd like to write in some capacity. A journalist would be ok....any such career.
As for the MA.....not worth it?
I have a place at Kings, so long as I graduate with a 2.1 in July (I am well past 60% ave at the mo, do duwah for my success).
Say I wish to teach in an American High School (a decent area, I am not cut out for the hassles of Black America, nor would I want to teach them)....whats the procedure post graduatrion for securing such a job?
Shall I contact the American embassy or something?
Teachers are in short supply in the US. Private schools (i.e. non-gov't schools) are very competitive. Large cities are where the shortages are. So you will have to deal with black people, you biggoted pussy. Take your skirt off and hang with the brothers...
Did you just get up one day and told yourself that you would waste 4 years of your life doing something that you won't even find interest in later on? Black kids are everywhere in America; where will you hide?
You must understand that my apprehension about teaching Black Americans is not grounded in racism, but in concern. They dont appear to be too refined, and may (a) mug me (b) kill me or something else.
Where could I avoid them? I checked the stats, and Wisconsin doesnt have much blacks, same with NH.
:D
I guess I'll have to teach them....so long as they leave the firearms at home.
I just clearly stated my views are NOT ground in racism. I am just making observations from the information I gather. Each time I turn on the news, and see negative items in America, it always has (ok 80% of the time) a black face.
I was rasied to be very non aggressive, and am just looking out for my own security.
You are talking like one of the many ignorant Brits who think Jerry Springer is still the most popular show in America because it is still running strong in Britain! I would never hire a teacher who stereotypes, to be honest.
Just concerned with safety. Rather safe then sorry.
Any how, in reality I have no prejudices, can anyone here give me contact details for the relevant agencies/officials for securing a teaching job in either Los Angeles, New York (esp this), San Fransisco, poss. Miami.
