lbg, I'm pretty sure its not as simple to get a teaching job in the States... you'd have to go to the equivalent of what in Canada is Teacher's College for a one year course and then get licensed.
Not sure of the exact procedures in the States though.
lbg - try a few senators and congressmen (I am not kidding)....they're always looking for 'perspective' people with different backgrounds and your history education may actually come in handy.
I know my stuff. I will not give them a Islamist slant, I am neutral in political terms. A staunch social liberal to boot.
I can think of far worse ppl to be teaching kids.
I would promote egalitarianism and secularism in my class room. And provide a factual analysis of US history (key areas are Civil War, FP after WW2 and New Deal).
Yes i dont like arguing with folks either so wont say much. But i do feel sorry for the views you have abt a certain race. How would you feel if you wanted to work in all white area and they rejected you because of your brown skin and told you , you looked like a terrorist to them? I have been told pretty ugly stuff and lemme tell you: i didnt like it one bit. And the reason i say you shouldnt teach my kids is, i dont want my kids’ views to be corrupted by such things. I would like to see racism as a thing of the past, not something my or your kids should have to deal with. I guess i am dreaming too high.
I've no problem with Blacks. Honest. So long as they are not the "gangter type". And I dislike all "G's"-not just black ones. That whole "gangster attitude" they have is not appealing.
I'd hate to me in a class room with 30 such "rappers"-you understand. Surely.
Yes i understand. I am also not in the whole rap scene. However, not all blacks are rappers. It took me some time to get used to the baggy clothes, their accent and the du-rags. But i met some real nice folks and their physical appearences didnt matter. they have their own culture, just like we do, or the brazilian next door or native americans. And the reason i am trying to argue is taht i remember your thread a while back.
Yes I understand that looks can be deceiving, but many of them will sadly have such chips on there shoulders.
As for the culture, its a street culture. African culture, properly, is as valid as any other. But even educated Africans lambast Afro-American hooliganism as leaving a poor image of the Black race.
chicago is full of blacks. You probably want to go teach in West Virginia, Maine or alberta canada. No black people but you will have to be careful with locals hwo might mistake you for one.
I would like to teach in a big US city for awhile.
Another side of me would like to teach in "quieter" states, smaller and less populated. I have looked into Wisconsin (as I feel this will be similarish to the pace of life I enjoy here), and New Hampshire for similar reasons.
