as Kaleem points out the message may just be genuinely misunderstood aided by political reasons. the folks who gathered around Nicene and decreed that "Son" means Son of God as an article of faith were Western christians (those who had been following the Greek translation of the Bible). In translation to Greek the word for Son lost its other meanings (see Icono's post) and therefore confined the Greeks to that meaning. This then became the dominant version.
