Jasoosy Dunya was the original name for Colonel Faridi and Hameed novels. Although, Imran Series bacame more famous eventually, it was Colonel Faridi who brought the real mystery with style in the sub-continent. Some of the famous villians of Ibn-e-Safi actually first appeared in Jasoosi Dunya and then moved to Imran Series. Sing Hi, Finch, Thresia and Alfonse (only names in Jasoosi Dunya, actual appearance in Imran Series) are some of those characters.
The level of thrill, mystery, suspence, and action was a lot more intense in Colonel Faridi books than Imran series. Although, Imran series had more adventure, comical situations, and scope for the story plot.
I am starting this thread for the forgotten, yet a superb character originated by our great Ibn-e-Safi, Colonel Faridi.
Let’s talk about Faridi, Hameed, Anwar, Rasheeda, Qasim, Neelam, Gilahri begum, Kahn Bahadur Asim, Inspector Rekha, Sub Inspector Asif, Leonard, Sing Hi, Finch, Jerald Shastri, Fauladme (faulad+Admi), and other marvellous characters of Jasoosi Dunya.
Ibn-e-safi started Jasoosi Dunya as a challenge to prove that people still had the decency to come to clean, entertaining, and educational literature if made available to them. At that time Urdu lacked writers of mystery and there were a very few names such as Terath Raam Poori and few others. Most of the work was translated from other languages. Hence, Jasoosi Dunya was founded.
Ibn-e-safi admitted himslef that he learned from western literature also and wrote a few books which had their plots borrowed. Borrowing plots is nothing new and is still quite a bit in practice and can be seen more in movies now rather than literature. Regardless, it was his brilliance and very hard work that provided a new means of relaxation and enjoyment to common people's minds exhausted from daily, boring chores. And although the situations presented in his stories were not very realistic and practical, his writing style brought every thing to life. The characters, places, situations, jokes ... all gave people something to relate to. And that alone is his "singular" (as Sir Doyle's Watson frequently uses) and most noble accomplishment.
Safi fan, have you read'andha kuwaN', it was jasoosi number 4 or 5. Faridi probably had his weakest moment and told the nawabzadi that he likes her. That was an excellent novel and Hameeds humor was great. Inpector Jagdesh was another charachter in the initial novels.
Sehrai dewana was a great 2 novel story, probably one of the best of Jasoosi dunya.
I have read all of Ibn-e-Safi's novels several times. Pur-Asraar Kunwaan was #6 and it was Ghazal who was trying to attract Faridi and he was also attracted to her. Ibn-e-Safi showed that his characters went through an emotional, mental evolutionary process and finally got mature on their personal believes.
My personal favorites are "Maut ki Aandhee #12", "Jungle ki Aag #37", "Maut ki Chataan #41", "Khooni Bagaulay #45", "Zameen ke Badal #75", "Ooncha Shikaar #77", and "Sahrayee Deewaana #125". Some really great and interesting plots.
In "Ooncha Shikaar", the ending is superb and pretty unexpected.
"Maut ki Aandhi" was the first Khaas Number ever by Ibn-e-Safi. He takes his readers to the mysterious land of Egypt. He draws such a picturesque image of egyptian life that reader finds himself/herself a part of the great adventure. One of the most interesting mystery books ... read it if you can.
Is this thread dead now? Or should I just make it my journal?
Aren't there people who like "Jasoosi Dunya"???
What's this world coming to???
I need to go see a shrink now!
GS brother, you break my heart! YOU HAVE NOT READ JASOOSI DUNYA !!!
Well, I would really really really encourage you to find Jasoosi Dunya novels and read them. Imran is good but Faridi is better ... he he he ... I hope Imran lovers don't come out with sticks to beat me up.
Dear Safi Fan
your exhauastive knowledge of all things Ibne safi And particularly Jassosi Duniya is simply amazing. I recommend you write a paper /biog of Israr sahib and get a masters degree in Ibne safi writing and maybe start a course in either KARACHI/LAHORE /ISLAMABAD uni or insert THE neasrby university to your residence.nowadays one can prestty much write a thesis on his choice and afterwards start studies course on same and do a lecture circuit. of course i shall claim half of all proceeds if you take up on this as providing inspiration and guidance.
Anyhow I am myself inclined heavily towards jasoosi Duniya.I LOVE Imran series but Colonel fardidi Capt hameed and the stories and sheer thrill factor was is and will remain enthralling forever.as i said its been roughly 15 years since i have touched any novel so it all remains a blur but even then i can recall that it was only Colonel Faridi that had the power to put Imran in his place and for all its worth Imran Knew that colonel was THE MAN too. and GOLDIE boy the characters are not competing for your attention ...the stories are and if you read both the series then you will find that both have their distinct flavour and thrills.thanks for the list SAFI FAN what about Imran series complete List as well ?
Man oh man .. how i wish this was happening 10 years back.. i would have discussed all intricasies of the plots and characterisations with yourselves .. ...just gimme a couple of months and i shall go through all the books again and then i will be ready again.
mujhay bohat pehlay respond karna chahiyay thaa lekin i was away.

dear Scorpio,
Jab uncle kaha hai to phir ehtram kartey howay jasoosi duniya bhi parh hi dalo ! NO ONE is saying that you stop loving IMRAN or Put Faridi before Imran ...just isntead of cocooning yourself what i am offering you is to expand your horizons even more ...and if you dont want to then thats fine ...thats your opinion , choice .But What you HAVE TO DO IS ACCEPT THAT THATS WHAT OTHERS HAVE TOO>>>>> their opinions and choice ... so if there are Jasoosi duniya afficianados out there then let them be ....
unfortunately thats what is wrong with international politics as well.
Dear Golden bhai,
I think you can give a fair comparison only if you have read both series. How can you say Imran is better when you have not even read a Jasoosi Dunya novel? So, my sincere advice is that if you really want to do a comparison read a jasoosi dunya book. You may be in love with Imran but every thing you love may not be the best in the world ... ;) if you know what I mean.
Dear Shaktoo (uncle?),
Thanks for the compliment regarding my info on Ibn-e-Safi. Well, I have been reading Ibn-e-Safi since 8th grade and have read all of his books several times. Also, I did not read others on his characters much. Hence most of my info on his novels is not too far off. As long as writing a paper on Ibn-e-Safi is concerned, I may just do it if I get a chance. I think a writer who served Urdu in such a manner deserves that much.
Bhai Ruswa,
Tuzk-e-do-pyaazi is great. Also prince chilli is another fantastic piece by Ibn-e-Safi. The sarcasm is just too hysterical.
So fellows now that I am able to catch your attention towards Jasoosi Dunya, I would love to hear anything favorite about the series, i.e., characters, stories, plots, etc.
