I've ruined my skin

Hi everyone, its been a long time since I’ve posted.

I really need some help as I have managed to mess up my flawless skin. This time last year I decided to start using Clarins products which caused me to break out massively, then me being me I kept hacking at them which has left me scars all over my cheeks. I still have congestion around my cheeks and forehead.

Please can someone recommend me skin care products to use. I thought I had oily skin but i think its more combination but I don’t know whether that’s because I stripped the oil from the cheeks which made them super dry.

I have uneven skin (little dents) on my cheeks as well as scars.

I wanna cry :bummer:

Re: I've ruined my skin

Try Retin-A along with a fading cream for the scars (the Retin-A will dramatically decrease the time flat scars will take to fade, when I use it's usually about a month)

Am sure you know this now but you absolutely not hack or pick at skin that's broken out because obviously that makes the scarring worse..

For a more intense treatment you could try a TCA peel.. a higher strength TCA peel may sort this out in one go but it's VERY intensive (it would literally burn the top layers of skin off) so not recommended unless you really know what you're getting into, for example you would probably not be able to face family members for a week or two, you would literally look like a burns victim.. Please only go to a professional as well..

Re: I've ruined my skin

What is your current skincare routine? Morning and night?

Re: I've ruined my skin

I do love quick results but not sure if I'm confident with a TCA peel. Where can i purchase the Retin-A cream?

I know I shouldn't touch them its a very bad habit of mine :(

Currently I'm using rosewater in the morning after washing my face with water.

Night: Rosehip oil to remove my makeup with followed by a cleansing gel to remove the oil. Followed by rosewater again.

Re: I've ruined my skin

^ I'm confused. You need a cleansing gel to remove the oil? The hot washcloth or towel doesn't remove it all for you? And right now, you're not using any moisturizer or sunscreen at all?

Re: I've ruined my skin

When I was reading up on OCM it stated I could use a cleansing product to remove it. Maybe I'll try without that now.

Rose hip oil was my moisteriser too, but i stopped using that in the morning as my foundation never looked right when I wore it. If I try anything else it breaks me out.

I don't wear sunscreen.

Re: I've ruined my skin

if you had flawless skin before you used the Clarins products, why don't you go back to what you were using to maintain your skin ?

Re: I've ruined my skin

1) OCM: Apply/rub oil all over face and upper neck area. Get a washcloth and wet it with hot water (as hot as you can stand). Squeeze out the water and gently wipe off oil with the hot steaming towel. Wet towel again and repeat. You will do this 3 to 4 times. This should take off all oil and makeup. No need for additional cleanser. If you want to make sure everything is off your skin, you can use a super gentle toner afterwards. I use Dickinson's Pure Witch Hazel toner.

2) Since you do not wear sunscreen, do not get any of the items recommended by Deeba. Don't use any products with any type of AHA (glycolic or lactic acid), retinol, retin-a etc. All these things make your skin extra sensitive to the sun. So if you use the products without protecting your skin with a good sunscreen, you will age faster and are at a increased risk for hyper pigmentation.

3) Get a vitamin C serum and used that every morning. You can get whichever one you want but make sure you read the ingredient list and that it contains L-ascorbic acid.

4) Without using a sunscreen daily, you should just use the vitamin C serum and a good moisturizer. There are tons of good ones out there so find one that works for you (some of the ones I like are Lancome Bienfait, Clinique moisture surge, Belif moisture bomb). But again, please make sure it doesn't have any retinol or glycolic/lactic acid.

Re: I've ruined my skin

Akaprincess - I have reverted for now but wanted a quick way to get rid of the scars/dents

Paheli - Thank you for the detailed response, I really do appreciate it.

I have tiny little dents (is that what you call it) on my cheeks which I absolutely hate. Will the vitamin C serum help smooth my skin over again?

I'm not against wearing sunscreen, I am open to Retin a and skin peels if it will quicken the recovery time of my skin. I have done a search on the forums and have looked into the skin peels.

Are you able to recommend the best one?

Ps my cousin is getting married in March hence why I'm panicking

Re: I've ruined my skin

I had dents or pitts in my skin from a really bad case of acne that I had a few years ago. Alhumdolillah skin is much, much better now. I did several sessions of professional microdermabrasion and peels to smooth out the skin and reduce the appearance of not just the dents but a scar that got from an accident. I would suggest that you see a dermatologist to find out what your options are; a derm or even a licensed esthetician can examine your skin and implement treatments that are at the appropriate level of strength for your skin.

Nah, don't panic. My cousin is getting married this week and I did not have enough time to shed a few pounds, to grow my hair long enough...oh and two of nails broke. It's okay, OP. We tend to make all these goals in terms of our appearance for an upcoming wedding or trip to Pak....and they usually don't happen. Don't rush it....just slow down and find out what suits your skin. And stop picking at it. I never listened to my mom's warnings about getting pits in the skin until it was too late.

Many people recommend making a toner of rose water, glycerin, and lemon juice. I can't remember the ratio. But you can get vegetable glycerin and it will lock in moisture so that will soften up the dry areas. Lemon contains vitamin C and will brighten your skin and even out skin tone , reduce oil production and kill germs. Some recommend applying it and washing it off after 20-30 minutes and others recommend leaving it on the whole night and washing it off in morning. I have done the latter without any adverse effects, but everyone is different.

Re: I’ve ruined my skin

Where are you based? I’ve had similar issues but now alhamdullilah my skin is improving.

Re: I've ruined my skin

I did make an appointment with a specialist last month but then cancelled it due to the reviews being bad. The customers didn't see much difference after spending a lot of money so I didn't want to be in the same boat. I'll see if there are other places around tho.

I know better then to pick but I just can't seem to help myself. I'm glutton for punishment.

You're right RV i wish I listened to my mum too lol

Hubnubs - I'm based around London.

Re: I've ruined my skin

same as redvelvet, and you zimzimma, i also had those 'dents' on my face, especially on my checks, they were very prominent and i hated them... and by using peels for about 2 years on and off, i barely notice i have them anymore.. peels work wonders for your face !!!!!!

granted for me, it took a while for them to go away, but i wasnt very consistent with them either.. regardless, im so thankful i dont notice them anymore. they are great because the peels clean your skin/pores so well, it feels amazing

Re: I've ruined my skin

There is a thing called water that serves many purposes including cleaning face/body skin. Try using that for a change to clean your skin and keep all kinds of chemicals away from your skin as much as possible. I think you have ruined your skin by using too many chemicals. All kinds of face creams/cleansing and other routines for skin with commercial products contain chemicals not suitable for sensitive skin. Your skin can be oily or combination and sensitive at the same time. Another important thing you can do is allow your skin cells to breathe oxygen by keeping it make up free or free of any kind of face creams even night/day creams or moisturizers. I am sure that is also the reason why you are having break outs. Clean it with a good soap (If your skin is not super sensitive then Lux, camay, etc will be fine) and pure, clean/filtered tap water at normal temperature. Not too hot or cold. And allow your skin to breathe by avoiding contact with any kind of chemicals/creams/face wash/etc. Keep this simple routine for your face for atleast a month or two and most probably your skin will get back to being normal like it used to be.

Re: I've ruined my skin

Pitted scars are difficult to get rid of you and you need to see a professional for that.

Vitamin C serum will help even out your skin tone and give it a overall bright appearance. Used daily, you should notice a difference within 2-3 weeks.

As for sunscreen, below are a few that I have used over the years and liked. I'm a fan of physical sunscreens so I only use one that have a high % of Zinc. Don't get fooled by the names of some of the products below. They are all great sunscreens due to their Zinc content. And being desi, a lot a Zinc sunscreen's leave a white case so I try to get tinted sunscreen whenever possible. I'm not familiar at all with what's available in the UK. If possible, I would strongly recommend you get samples before buying it because not everyone's skin is the same and you many not like something that is liked by me or someone else.

1) Juice Beauty Stem Cellular CC Cream (This comes in 5 different shades to find one closest to your skin tone)

2) Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47 Protect + Perfect (This is the tinted version of their sunscreen. This is what I'm using right now)

3) Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Defense

Have you made an apointment with a dermatologist yet?

Re: I’ve ruined my skin

Thank you Paheli - I will try the best one for me.

I have been looking at Vitamin C serums and found this: https://swedishface.co.uk/vitamin-c-e-serum?gclid=CjwKEAiA7ejCBRDlp8uF6ezPnjoSJAAPED7MR9IyStS_UsACyM5R1KhnqySAdaMfjM3lLWxgf6NQEBoC7lnw_wcB

Are you able to advise if this is okay..I’ve been reading reviews for many and don’t want to waste money on fake products.

I will be booking an appointment with a term tomorrow as I’ve been super busy at work

Re: I’ve ruined my skin

The ingredient list looks fine to me. It’s L-ascorbic acid and I like that they state the %.
@Deeba1234: I believe you’re in the UK. Are you able to recommend a specific vitamin C serum that you may have used/currently using?

Re: I've ruined my skin

Hey there!
I have had derma needling and peels to help get rid of the pits and scars. It's only been 6 months but I can see such a difference.
There is something else called alkaline wash which is meant to be good for body acne and marks, though I haven't tired that yet.

On another note, I've started to have IPL and laser hair removal and am thinking where have I been all these years? It's wonderful!!!

so my aim is to be hair and scar free in 2017!! Then find a rishta and get married!!!!!!!!
