Why is it so unacceptable?? 
From what I understand, FIL is a longish term guest, not like he’s home for 2 days and OP and hubby wanted to leave him out of their plans even within those 2 days. As long as OP made sure he had a decent dinner at home, I don’t see why FIL has to be dragged along everywhere.
