Israel's Gaza mission kills 20

Israeli troops have destroyed dozens of home in Rafah, in the Gaza Strip. Israeli restrictions are making it hard to reach Rafah, but the BBC’s Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston has been contacting people there on their mobile phones.
The house off Salahudeen Street was home to S’ham Abu Libdeh. She lived in it for nearly 40 years, and she raised her seven children there. I spoke to her as she picked her way through the rubble that is now all that is left of her house.

Mrs Abu Libdeh said there was no warning that the bulldozers were coming.

“The Israelis gave us no time,” she said. “They were shooting. We ran with nothing.”

All she could grab were the children. And as they ran, she held up her headscarf like a white flag.

But it was not until the morning that she knew for sure that she had surrendered her home. When she woke up in the schoolyard where she had slept she was told that her house had been destroyed.

Poorest of the poor

As Mrs Abu Libdeh spoke from its ruins she nearly wept with rage and despair, and twice, in the distance, there were bursts of gunfire.

“My sons and I are trying to salvage timber, but there’s nothing here,” Mrs Abu Libdeh said. "We are crying here. The scene is incredible.

“People are shocked. There’s nothing left of their homes. Everything is buried in the rubble.”

I have lost everything - I have less than nothing

S’ham Abu Libdeh
Mrs Abu Libdeh’s smashed neighbourhood was known in the Rafah refugee camp as Block O. It fronts on to the corridor of land that is controlled by Israeli troops as they patrol between the town and the Egyptian border, which is less than 1km away.

Israeli troops often demolish homes along that southern edge of Rafah as they search for tunnels that the fighters use to smuggle weapons in from Egypt.

The people who live there are the poorest of the poor. Few would chose to stay on Rafah’s frontline streets if they could afford better.

And now, what little Mrs Abu Libdeh has - 1,000 Jordanian dinars ($1,412), and some jewellery - is buried beneath all that rubble. She is destitute.

“I have lost everything. I have less than nothing. I’m living on the street,” she said.

The Israeli army says it only demolished those houses from which Palestinian fighters launched attacks.

But Mrs Abu Libdeh denies that the gunmen used her home.

“From our house, nobody attacked the Israelis,” she said.

**It so happens that 15 May is, for Palestinians, the saddest day of the year. It is the day on which refugee families, like the Abu Libdehs, mark the loss of their homes in what is now Israel.

“The Catastrophe”, they call it.

Right now, Mrs Abu Libdeh is dealing with a whole new catastrophe. **

Sighhhhhhhhhh

Israeli war criminals getting more desperate and desperate, as they face Lebanon-style humiliation in Gaza, which is now inevitable.

Israel’s Gaza mission kills 20

Israeli troops have swept through a Palestinian refugee camp in Gaza while helicopters pounded it with missiles.
At least 20 Palestinians were killed in Rafah camp, including several gunmen and **two children hanging out washing. **

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat called it a “massacre”, while the UN and EU called on Israel to halt the operation.

**US President Bush said the bloodshed was “troubling”, but told a Jewish-American audience that Israel had the “right to defend itself from terror”. **

The Israeli military says “Operation Rainbow” is designed to attack militants and stop the flow of weapons smuggled through tunnels from Egypt.

It denied there were plans for a further systematic demolition of homes, **after knocking down almost 100 houses in the camp last week, leaving 1,100 people homeless. **

But two left-wing Israeli MPs condemned the operation.

**“It is completely unacceptable to continue baptising Gaza in blood because when Gaza is drenched in blood, it will also be the blood of our children,” warned Labour politician Avraham Burg. **

The BBC’s Middle East correspondent, James Reynolds, says the Israeli army is determined to show that it has regained control of Gaza after 13 soldiers were killed there last week - the country’s worst military loss in two years.

Air raids

The raid began at dawn, with a missile from a helicopter fired at a group of gunmen outside a mosque in Tel Sultan, killing three of them.

Two more missiles were fired, killing three more people who rushed to help and **leaving the mosque in flames. **

In a second air strike, four Palestinians were killed, all civilians, according to hospital officials quoted by the Associated Press news agency.

Seven Palestinians, most of them gunmen, were also reportedly killed in street fighting.

** In the vast majority of cases, it’s wanton destruction - unnecessary, disproportionate, unjustified, and deliberate

Donatella Rovera
Amnesty International **

**And Ahmad Mughayer, 13, and his sister Asma, 16, were shot dead as they stood on the roof of their house. Both were hit in the head as they hung out washing, relatives said. **

A Palestinian health official said a 20th man was killed while handling explosives.

Commentators describe the operation as one of the biggest in the area in years.

Trapped residents were reported to be huddling in the most protective rooms of their homes as bullets rained outside. Others tried to flee the area.

**Rafah hospital and local clinics were reported to be unable to cope with the flow of bodies and wounded people. **

Meanwhile, Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian in the West Bank town of Nablus and a local militant leader in Jenin, the Israeli military said.

Ya ya Israel has the right to defend themselves.

The bodies of Palestinian Ahmed Mughayer, 13, and his sister Asma, 16, right, are wrapped in blankets after being brought from the Talesultan area of the Rafah refugee camp, in the southern Gaza Strip, Tuesday, May 18, 2004. Both were on the roof of their three-story apartment building when they were hit by army fire, said their older brother, Ali. The shots were fired from an Israeli army position on the sixth floor of the neighboring building, he said

Yep, that's what the desperate zionist war criminals call it. After killing some 500 Palestinian children in the last few years, they continue to shamelessly kill more, and their supporters will continue to defend these war crimes.

History is witness to these war crimes, and what is happening in occupied palestine. These incidents only increase 1000 fold the amount of people ready to fight zionist entity and not talking about just in occupied palestine!

It is matter of time before the puppet rulers in Egypt, jordan etc are removed who protect israel with buffer, the millions surrounding this tiny state and the millions within it cannot wait for the moment when they get the signal to remove this zionist cancer!

^ okit has been now 5 years since I have been waiting for this overthrow of the"puppet rulers". I sugget you guys should start asap…you are not getting any younger. :smash:

curious tho…why was the part about two kids highlighted but not aboutthe 20 gunmen. :hoonh:

Israel is getting really desperate, as it commits more Nazi-like war crimes.

Israelis fire on crowds in Gaza

The Israeli army has opened fire on a crowd of Palestinian demonstrators in the town of Rafah in southern Gaza. **least 10 people were killed, though some reports put the number of casualties higher. Sveral children were among the dead, and more than 50 people were injured, many seriously, Palestinian medical workers said. **

Thousands of people were demonstrating against a massive Israeli operation in the refugee camp on the edge of Rafah. sraeli forces entered Rafah refugee camp on Tuesday to attack militants and find and destroy tunnels used to smuggle weapons. t has been one of the largest and bloodiest operations in Gaza since Israel occupied it in 1967, correspondents say.

Hospital chaos

Witnesses said an Israeli helicopter and tank fired at demonstrators marching down the main street of Rafah towards the Tel Sultan area of the nearby refugee camp where the Israel raids have been concentrated in the last two days. ounded protesters were evacuated from the scene of the shooting by ambulance, private cars and donkey carts to the Rafah hospital, witnesses said. ** A BBC correspondent at the hospital said the floors were drenched in blood as doctors treated incoming patients in corridors and on staircases. **

In the last three years

14.6 % of agricultural land in Gaza was destroyed
1867 Houses/buildings destroyed
2371 Families made refugees

Just today the Israeli gunship fired a missile on peaceful protest in broad daylight. 22 women and children have been killed and scores were seriously injured, and there were no militants hiding in between them.

So the israeli terrorists in helicopters bravely shot 22 women and children good going Amerikkka israels sponsor must be proud.

bush will come out with usual line "we are troubled by israels actions" hmmm troubled what is it confusing for him or does he really not know what is going on!

But the real villans in all this is not the israelis or the amerikkkans we know what kind of racists they are already, its the puppet rulers in muslim lands who just sit in their palaces watching on their wide screen TV`s the slaughter of youngsters and women in palestine.

They have armies with heavy weapons they have numbers of soldiers combined which reach into the 10`s of millions who are trained to kill what are these armies doing spit shining there tanks is that all they do!

Actions of late by Israel are unacceptable and must be condemned.

Israel has a right to defend itself by killing innocent children. Right Mr. Bush?

Someone needs to put Israel in check, they are out of control. They have lost all sense and any moral authority at this point.

But this does contradict the laughing smilies that claimed Israel had been humiliated and is retreating from Gaza like cowards. We might want to wait next time before making such chest-beating claims.

Peace is badly needed.

Despite everyones revulsion at Sharon, the pullout plan from Gaza was at least a way to disengage, and prevent this type of situation. No palestinian leader stepped forward to explore the idea. Ultimately if they had, it would provide more leverage to engage the entire Israeli population, not just the Likud.

If there is Palestinian support for the plan, I would support American reduction aid and support for Israel. Simply ram a solution down the throats of both the Palestinians, and the Israelis. The grown ups need to take away the car keys from these two parties who are drunk with hate....

The pullback from gaza is okay, but should be done at westbank too. The real lasting solution for peace here is

1) 2 viable states recognized by their neighbours
2) stable govts in each country..israelis need to be less trigger happy, palestinians need to keep the extremists in check. Sharon and Arafat both need to go.

It seems like fighting kids who just dont want to give up. extremists dont like peace plan so they go blow up pizza joints, Israel uses it as an excuse to back off from peace pricess while continuing to build settlements.

The place is a mess. I say evict everyone from there and turn the whole area into a theme park.

From the Ha’aretz:

Amnesty accuses IDF of war crimes

…] The Amnesty report’s main points are similar to those in last year’s report: It accuses Israel of excessive use of force, leading to “numerous deaths”; of strict closures and arbitrary arrests of Palestinians, of hindering Palestinian medical personnel, and of detaining pedestrians and drivers at checkpoints.

“In the vast majority of cases, it’s wanton destruction,” said Amnesty’s Donatella Rovera, a co-author of the report. “It’s unnecessary, disproportionate, unjustified and deliberate.”

Fat useless Sheikhs? Hellooooo - anyone awake in their palaces? Blah blah blah about Muslim unity/solidarity.

Firing on protestors ? i thought only barbaric governments did that.

Israelis fire on crowds in Gaza, BBC

Israeli troops have opened fire during a protest by Palestinian demonstrators in the town of Rafah in southern Gaza.

At least 10 people were killed and 60 injured, though some reports put the number of casualties higher.

The army expressed deep sorrow for the loss of innocent life, but said tanks and a helicopter had fired warning shots to stop crowds entering the area. US President George W Bush called for restraint from both sides and said he had asked Israel for “clarification”. “Both sides”? ah yes - one side is committing war crimes. What’s the other side doing?]

“It is essential that people respect innocent life in order for us to achieve peace,” he said.

But Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat called for international observers to protect his people, describing the events in Rafah as “atrocious crimes”.

Reuters news agency quoted the UN special human rights envoy in the Palestinian territories, John Dugard, as saying that the strikes were “war crimes” and amounted to collective punishment violating humanitarian and international human rights law.

This exactly what Israel started doing in it's last few years in Lebanon, when it knew it had lost the war then i.e. commit more and more horrid war crimes. Israel is not only desperate and out of control, but there is no doubt now it deliberatly targets civilians, including defenceless little children. The pictures of dead and injured Palestinian children are just so upsetting to see...

That is exactly what is required to achieve peace. People ON BOTH SIDES respecting innocent life. What do you find objectionable in that statement?
