ok, so Israel takes in a few billion per year in “assistance” funding from America
is that all it takes to keep dozens of extremely hostile neighbors with all manner of resources available to them at bay?? (and i mean enormous oil wealth, high-tech weaponry, general populaces that all hate Israel with a passion, the humilation of prior defeats as motivation, etc.)

the fact that the premier political figure of Iran publicly called for destruction of Israel - that certainly came across as an implicit threat - while simultaneously being involved in an international controversy regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the perception of Iran’s nuclear intentions (very relevant to his comments)…all creates a much bigger controversy than anti-Amreeka rallies in Tehran or whatever.
all you people who say “oh, well that’s what all Iranians already feel, so what’s the big dela?” or whatever really don’t understand the difference between that and when it comes out of a premier’s mouth in public? especially one involved in such a large-scale controversy closely related to that issue?

Although I have given up participating in such threads, but your ignorant response compelled me to reply. Israel takes more then “assistance”. Try technology, weapons and intelligence. Now lets see with all the oil wealth that Arabs have, how many Arms deals have they been able to pull off? I am not saying that its the fault of the west of Israel, it is their own fault to not think strategically..make no mistake, Israel exists because of US…there are no two ways about it. Next time, do your research before putting in such idiotic responses.

Saudi Arabia and many other Arab countries are some of the largest defence spenders in the world today, be that in terms of the % of GDP they allocate to defence or in terms of the per-capita amount. Together, Saudi Arabia and Egypt account for over $22 billion of the global defence spending, while the much-accused Israel spends less than $9 billion. While all these are 'official figures' , they can be disputed, but the reality is that it's not only Israel which would be inclined to understate the amount it spends.
What is astonishing is that Israel with a size of a large Arab city and a population to match has not only kept the rabidly hostile surrounding states at bay but has successfully routed them in wars that just lasted for a FEW DAYS! All these accusations of massive western support ring hollow because the Arabs get NO LESS in terms of the amount of weaponry and sophisticated arms from the west. Talk about Karachi or Lahore defeating and creating havoc in the the whole subcontinent -- and that too in the blink of an eye!
For comparison's sake, here's a look at the top defence spenders of the world [in terms of the per-capita amount]. IMPORTANT POINT TO NOTE: SIX out of the fifteen countries listed are Arab nations historically hostile to Israel. Where are they getting their arms from? Tonga or Tuvalu? NO -- The much maligned west supplies it to 'em through the massive arms deals which these countries execute with nations such as US, UK and France. And yeah, they supply it to Israel too, although in a much lesser amount, but still it's to the Israelis credit that they have shown to the world how utterly incomptetent these Arab nations are. Though Israel is the largest spender in terms of the per-capita amount, quantitatively the Major Arab states such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE etc. are spending between 3 or 4 times of what Israel is. And people still cry wolf!

But the relation beetween Israel and US was not always rosy. Prior to Israel, the strategic function of an American outpost in the middle east was served by the Shah’s Iran…Iran was the Israel before Israel, if you like

Show me the source. How did you come up with that number Arabs are spending 4 or 5 times more than Israel. But at the same time you are admitting that Israel is spending more than any other country per capita. What kind of stupid theory is that?
Israel is on the top of the list for per capita . You are showing numbers which are contradicting what you are saying. It doesn’t matter how much Arab countries are spending on defence in dollar amount. The only way to measure and compare such figures is in per capita.

The few billion is ON TOP of the military aid. Israel 's army is an extension of the American one…and it doesn’t pay it’s own way…

The might of Israel is overstated.
During the Yom Kippur war, the Israeli army received a sound thrashing.
In the leadup to war, a pre-emptive action was ruled out. Henry Kissenger suggests that in fact that was a good move, as they would have not fared well...
The self-halting of the massive syrian tank advance (some say it was because they were shocked at how qucikly they were making progress) when they were poised to go ove the Golan, and operation Nickel Grass were neccessary for Israel's integrity and halting of the Arab invasion.
The war started well for the Arabs, but realistically the war was just a pawn struggle between the US and the Soviets. Israel had to stay intact, and the Arab states had to halt...anything else would have ment confrontation between the super powers.
Since then, Israel had been a client state of the US...while the main Arab backers, the soviets...well, we all know what happened to them.

Ever taken a basic math or economics class, dumba$$? Do you know what per-capita arms spending means? You obviously dont.
I'll educate you.
It means that Israel is spending roughly over $1400 per person for defence. But since Israel has a puny population of 6 million, it amounts to relatively lower total defence spending compared to nations like Saudi Arabia [which spend to the tune of 18/19 billion spread over the populations which are many times larger].
My data shows that Arab countries are in the same extravagant club of massive defence spending than Israel in terms of the per-capita amount [as is indicated by 6 of the top 15 countries being Arab], however since their populations are many times larger it amounts to manifold defence spending if compared to what the Israelis do. That should put to rest all these conspiracy theories of poor-arabs-getting-no-arms and evil-israel-which-gets-all-sort-of-backing.

You still haven’t said anything new. Israel is still spending more than any other country on its defence per capita and that’s all matters in terms of financial numbers. You still haven’t given me source of where you are coming with those numbers that Arabs are spending billions. I guess pulling such numbers out of ass is a normal thing for you to prove your lies.
