Israel’s military launched a spy satellite early Monday, the Defense Ministry said, and a senior official suggested it could help keep track of developments in Iran.
The Ofek 7 satellite was “launched and successfully injected into orbit,” the ministry said in a statement. Israel’s Army Radio said its resolution was high enough to detect objects of 28 inches on the ground.
The chief of the Defense Ministry’s space program, Haim Eshed, suggested that the satellite could be used to counter Iran’s efforts to develop a nuclear weapon. When asked if the Ofek-7 could be used to strike Iran, Eshed said “Intelligence is intelligence and you can do with the intelligence what the leaders decide.”
“But this is definitely intelligence on the best level that it’s possible to obtain from satellite systems,” Eshed told Army Radio.
The satellite weighs 66 pounds, is 7.5 feet long and will operate at least four years, Israel Radio reported.
The launch was carried out at 2:40 a.m. local time, Israel Radio reported. Ofek 7 is to replace Ofek 5, which has been orbiting for almost five years.
Ofek 5’s life had to be extended when the launch of its planned replacement, Ofek 6, failed two years ago.
Israel has labeled Iran as its most serious strategic threat.

Don't worry this is the classic NRI tactic...bleeding heart liberals on the domestic front...but hardcore southern baptist style right winger on the foreign policy issues concerncing those pesky moslems...then there is nothing nefarious with the extreme right wing of the republican party...then suddenly all the right wing pundits, like the Coulters, Krauthammers, the Freidmans, the late Fallwel, the Limbaughs and the Hannities start making a lot of sense and acquire an instant credibility...
BTW, it was Krauthammer who suggesting using sex to humiliate Arabs, which manifested itself in Abu Ghraib and other such practices in Gitmo...

Pakistan's biggest threat is Pakistan itself. Next on line is Israel. A country that has openly carried nuclear weapons since the 60s but is protected by its sugar daddy the USA.
A nuclear weapon is really more of a deterrant than it is an offensive weapon. If Iran uses a nuke, the trigger happy USA will nuke Iran and 5 countries around it.
But if it just obtains a nuke then it guarantees its own safety for a good amount of time. The USA has a history of attacking and stirring violence in small helpless nations such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia and countless south american countries. Note the trend that none of these evildoers have a nuke. The real bad boys of the "axis of evil" that do have nukes i.e. North Korea, China, Pakistan etc bask in guaranteed security even against the high and mighty and God's representatives on earth, the USA.

Israel's population is around 6 million and no strategic depth and thus the only way to guarantee that Arab countries don't invade Israel to destroy it is the assurance that Israel has the nuke and will be willing to use it to stop an Arab invasion
Same exact reason that Pakistan made nuclear weapons. Even if India's didn't make a Nuke, I still would have supported Pakistan make nuclear weapons as it keeps India's large conventional advantage off balance.
Keep in mind, that during the 1973 war, Israel didn't use the Nuke and defeated Egypt and Syria on conventional means.
And when you have countries like Iran pledging to destroy Israel, you can understand why Israel would want to have nukes, just in case, if the mullah's lost their minds....
And also, the Holocaust psyche is deeply scarred on the Jewish people, when they were helpless and led to their slaughter....I don't think they ever want to go back into a position of weakness

Such grand military technology did not stop Israel getting beaten just over the border in Lebanon, so one doubts it will do much good against Iran that is hundreds of miles away.

As for Iran, the country is just too unstable and too dangerous to have nuclear weapons....
Its culture of martyrdom will mean there will be no mutually assured destruction to keep it from using Nuclear weapons such as USA and USSR during the cold war.

The war just proved that Israel is fallable. Then why is it that the arab and islamic world continue to concoct wild conspiracy theories to blame mossad and israel for everything?
If Mossad so utterly failed to guess the strength of Hezbollah and their stash of anti-tank missiles doesn't this run counter to everything that the arab media spews about Mossad from it being responsible for HIV among Arabs or Fatah-al-Islam in Lebanon.
As for Iran. Israel is not going to invade Iran but most likely carry out tactical strikes against Iranian facilities. And thus the comparison between Israel's Army's performance in Lebanon vs Israel's potential attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, is like comparing apples and oranges.
Pakistan lost over 700-1000 soldiers fighting the Pashtun rebels in NWFP but does that mean that Pakistani Army is no match for India?
