Islam: regard men and women as equal?

:salam:
Is there a mention of the equality of women in the Qur’an?

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

walaikum as salaam,
you will find a very good explanation here
http://www.islam-qa.com/index.php?QR=1105&ln=eng

as the answer says, Islam is not a religion of equality but a religion of justice

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

in what sense????

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

Assalam O Aalaikom,

Men and women are not equal in some circumstances, but overall they are equal. In physically, women are not equal.

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

Being a woman, I would just like to say that there is equality in Islam. Both men and women will get the same treatment for their deeds when the time comes. So I would have to say that Islam is indeed a religion of equality and not just ‘justice’.

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

It kind of looks to me that no one actually went to the site and read the answer.

First thing is that you need to define what equality is, if you are going to say that in Islam men and women are equal. If you think equality is actions and deeds then yes men and women are equal. If you think of equality as in the western sense then men and women are not equal.

I can give a lot of examples
- the way men and women divorce each other
- the laws of inheritance
- the clothing requirements

“Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allaah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means"
[al-Nisa’ 4:34]

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

it does'nt....women are called 'nakusul aqal' by quran, men are allowed to punish women(wife or wives) even beat them up when they mis-behave.

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

you need to be careful how you say that, because that verse indicates that beating is the last resort and the verse refers to the unfaithful wives, ie. a husband cannot go around beating his wife for no reason
there's also other rules that are normally overlooked with regards to that verse
for example, it is haraam to hit someone on the face
also it is not allowed to beat someone in a way that it leaves marks on the body

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

Women have the upper hand in terms of wearing and clothing. There is already listed the rights about women. Please check this thread:

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

islam regard men and women fairly, not equally.

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

:rotfl: at thread’s title.

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

^ its not a title, its a question :smack:

anyway, heres an answer.

A. As I mentioned earlier equality does not mean identicality. In Islam Women are over all equal but not identical in each and every aspect.

I would like to conclude my talk by giving an example:

In an examination, two students “A” and “B” both obtain the first rank by scoring 80 out of 100. The question paper contained 10 questions each carrying 10 marks.

In question No. 1 Student “A” obtained 9/10 and student “B” obtained 7/10.

Student “A” gets higher marks and is better off than student “B” in question No.1.

In Question No.2 Student “A” scores 7/10 and student “B” scores 9/10.

Therefore in question 2 student “B” gets higher marks and is better off than student “A”.

In question 3 both “A” and “B” obtained 8/10 i.e. in Q.3. both are equal.

When you add up the grand total of all the ten questions, both obtained 80/100. Therefore both the students “A” and “B” are overall equal. In some questions “A” has higher marks than “B” and in some questions “B” has higher marks than “A”, while in other questions both are equal.

To take the analogy to practical terms, Allah has made man physically stronger than woman. Suppose a robber enters your house, will you talk about women’s right and say men and women are identical and equal and hence tell your mother, wife, sister or daughter to go and fight the thief? It is but natural that your answer is “no”! Concerning physical strength, men are at an advantage as compared to women and it is their duty to tackle such problems first. If required, in some circumstances, the womenfolk too can help.

On the other hand, as I mentioned earlier, in Islam, a child gives three times more love and respect to his mother as compared to what he gives his father. Here, when it comes to children giving love and respect to their parents, women have more advantage as compared to men.

In the same fashion men and women ln Islam are over all equal, but in some aspects men have a degree of advantage (and the related responsibility) and in some aspects women have a degree of advantage (and the related responsibility), while in other aspects both are equal.

B. This, in brief high lights Women’s Rights in Islam as based on the Qur’an and Sunnah.

However, in respect to these, whether Muslim societies in different parts of the world now and in the past have behaved or misbehaved is a different story. Many Muslim societies did not give woman the complete rights because of wrong interpretations of the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Western Society has done so much harm to women that some Muslim societies have become over-cautious, and deviated from the Qur’an and Sunnah by going to the other extreme; yet others have blindly imitated, aped and followed the western society without analysing the rights given to women in Islam.

If they had analysed and understood the Qur’an and the Sunnah they would have realised that women’s rights are modern and not outdated.

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

Loaded question.

As far as the Western observer is concerned, or at least when it comes to Islam, there is a direct correlation between one's worth as a human and how one much one inherits. In face of such attitudes, we can't really honestly tackle this question.

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

Yes for sure we cant, tackle this question, this is because if you answer to the westerners there is the other new issue they come up with
Just wondering, if the westerners are bend on the fact of egalitarianism.

Why dont the Men and Women compete with each other in Olympics 100 meters or even other related sports. This is a complete fiasco because this people lack knowledge of Almighty God, here they can say they are not equal thats how even Allaah in the Quran, through various verses has told us..
Ask them this question i wonder whats there answer for this.

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

When time comes…and before that???

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

Desidude.....Beating does not mean that you beat the woman black and blue so she ends up in a hospital. I don't know the exactness but the beating should be no harder than the touch of a feather - this is what my Qur'an teacher told me. So I completely agree with sherafghan - be careful in HOW YOU PHRASE YOUR STATEMENTS - EVERYTHING THESE DAYS ABOUT ISLAM IS SCRUTINIZED LIKE CRAZY AND INTERPRETED IN WAYS THAT SUITS THE HATERS OF THE RELIGION.

Re: Islam: regard men and women as equal?

There is more EQUALITY IN ISLAM THAN ANY OTHER RELIGION OUT THERE. The sad thing is that TRADITIONS have mixed in with religious practices and created confusion for people.

In answer to your question, an example - in Islam, what a woman earns belongs to her. Her husband has no right over that money as he is the main bread winner of the family. If the woman chooses to contribute the money towards the household expenses it is entirely her decision. If she doesn't that too is her decision and the HUSBAND has no right to force her to contribute. How many religions can you show me have this? Furthermore, if men have 'powers' in certain areas then women do as well in Islam. I am a Muslim woman and am empowered by my religion and not oppressed and I certainly have a voice which I use without any fear of repercussion no matter where I am. This is my God given right and no one has the right to take it away from me - not even men who consider themselves mightier and better than women.

To add to this, when Muslim women get married, there consent is always asked for as women cannot be forced into matrimony. If they do not desire to be wed to a particular someone or not wed at all, they have the GOD given right to refuse. IT IS SOCIETY THAT TAKES AWAY THESE RIGHTS FROM WOMEN AND IF SHOULD THEY REFUSE, SUDDEN SHAME IS BROUGHT ON THE FAMILY. THIS IS NOT PART OF THE RELIGION - THIS IS TRADITION - So you see, Islam has given equal rights to women. I am one who is very content with the rights I have.
