Explicitly informed by what/whom? A book they don't believe in or respect? If one doesn't have that belief then there is no "choice". And if one acquires that belief just avoid hellfire then is based on selfishness and not spirituality - which means nothing.
On the contrary, a belief cannot be acquired by iterating it. Faith comes from the heart.
Recognition of a higher calling or God does not come from solely from just visible proofs but from an inside feeling which only you could feel or relate to. Its embedded in human nature to feel. Athiests just choose to shut it out. They systematically tame themselves to not accept it.
Prophet Abraham did not follow any scriptures when he went out looking for God, he just felt it in his heart. God can be perceived by a person who has never seen a scripture in his life.
