Islamic scholars seem to have some kind of bone to pick with dogs.
Most of us here aren’t strangers to the feelings that many hadith have towards dogs. These hadith outline the warnings for keeping dogs, and conditions where dogs are permissible to be kept.
One hadith states that angels will not enter houses of those whom own dogs.
This particular one seems to be taken to heart and has caused an overall negative attitude towards dogs. In my experience, many muslims would prefer not to get a dog for religious reasons.
However, there is a significant portion of the the Islamic population that does not pay much mind to all the negative hadith. They focus on the much more positive light that has been shed on dogs in Islam.
Hadith have shown kindness towards animals, particularly dogs, to be greatly rewarded.
It is stated in the Quran that meat hunted from dogs is halal to eat with no further religious purification necessary.
Another mention of dogs also shows dogs as companions of devout Muslims in Surah Kahf.
Furthermore, nowhere in the Quran is it explicitly stated it is forbidden to keep dogs as pets (companions). This falls under the not-forbidden-thus-allowed category which is enough for plenty. Including myself.
So where do you land on the whole case?
Do you consider dogs to be bringers of ill fortune? Or nah?
I have siblings and they are hard work, a dog? No thanks. On a serious note, not too fussed about the religious perspective on dogs as i dont mind them nor do i see the harm but i wouldnt really keep one, out of personal choice.
I’ve always wanted a dog…my sister is the true animal lover and she really wants one but like u stated…we’ve always been scared away frkm it by the angels not entering your house hadith and their impurity etc etc.
Also i feel like…idk…my aunt lives in the village in pakistan…they have a dog. Lovely pet. My mom grew up in the village in Pakistan and they had 2 dogs over the course of 20-some years. I think it’s more of ab urban Muslim view than a rural Muslim one. Or maybe not…idk.
Glad to see someone open this thread. I was planning on opening one myself soon.
From what I recently read somewhere. There is an incident where a dog enters a Masjid & urinates on the Masjid floor prompting the Sahabas at the time to rush to him & to kick him out of the Masjid. When Prophet SAW notices what is happening he instructs the Sahabas to be gentle with the animal & not make a big fuss of it. Just clean the wet area & continue praying including on the supposed “dirty” spot. As it is, in the Prophet SAW’s era dogs freely used to roam around even inside a Masjid. A place that Is obviously considered the purest of all places.
Apparently it’s only the saliva of dogs that is considered impure due to the fact that they do have a habit of snooping around even in the dirtiest corners.
Also it is true that an animal hunted by a dog is considered Halal provided you take Allah’s name & make “Neeyat” for the kill before letting the dog start hunting.
Now dogs do salivate a lot so how do we keep one in a house/apartment without having it’s saliva all over the place is what personally stopped me from adopting one.
Will keep a close eye on this thread. It might hopefully change my views.
I think dogs are allowed outside the house, not inside the living quarters. In villages, the dogs basically serve the security purpose and usually roam around. People don’t snuggle up, french kiss or sleep with their dogs.
Correct me if i am wrong, dogs do lick their own and other’s ass right?
The hadees did not imply that dogs are not allowed inside the quarters, it just says that angels are not going to enter if a junubi, a dog or a picture (of living being) is inside the house.
Unfortunately I know many many families, who will give you a long lecture about not having sa dog, while their whole house is full of family portraits.
I’ve thought about a dog but they are a mess. Hygiene and stuff. I can’t even take care of myself so I don’t think I can take care of them. It takes work to train them. And then as mentioned in OP, the hadith.
Bint-e-Naeem, are you a 100% sure that it was a dog that urinated in the masjid? Because I’ve read the version stating it was a man who did it.
Pigs are forbidden to eat, but despite the injunction, I don’t think that cruelty toward even this animal would be tolerated either; it’s still among Allah’s creation. That said, kindness to dogs because they are Allah’s creation can’t be stretched to justify that having them inside them homes would be permissible. They’re two different issues. As for the Sahaba having dogs…with what intention/purpose were those dogs kept? Were they kept for the purpose of protection or merely to have as pets? Were they kept within the homes or outside the homes? As for eating the meat that is hunted by dogs or the animals that one has trained for hunting is mentioned in Surah Maidah…and the scholars vary in their opinions about the consuming of food caught by dogs…there are some restrictions regarding it. I don’t consider them bringers of ill-fortune, but I am not an animal/pet person.
Ok found this Hadees from Bukhari, but posting it without any context. It’s a cut and paste, including the comment in parenthesis.
Dogs used to pass through the Masjid Al-Nabawi leaving the filth of their saliva or urine, and Sahabah did not clean after them.[17] (keep in mind it was an open floor of dirt and sand).
I love dogs, so does my whole family. But I went through panic many time when dog licked any cut on my hand.
Reason being is I have played with a kid who died of rabies.
When islam say saliva is dirty is obvious why.
Now to address dog in side the house:
Once I read what is consider “exposure” to bat. (bats too can carry rabies like dogs).
It was.
1-if you wake up and see bat flying.
2-if bat is found in the room with child or mentally ill person.
Automatically in both cases you need to get your rabies preventing vaccination done.
Use same principle its safe not have dog in same place where people sleep or where we have little children.
Redness things can surprise you in the way you cant imagine. Pigs could be dirty and all that. Did you know pig is also considered the most social animal. Very intelligent too.
Who know that law is perhaps 30% to protect pigs.
I wont be surprised if there was a law saying you could never eat a dolphin. (actually there is)
People read verses and hadith absolutely without context. I personally would have trouble because of hygiene issues. Even white people I know who are friendly with dogs do not allow them for safety and hygiene issues around their children.
Depends upon the white people. I did read that dogs are being invited and living inside the house as family members moreso than the past, but I guess that could also be due to the break down in family culture here.
Personally, I wouldn’t be sleeping with a dog or a cat or parrot so they would need their own sleeping arrangements. Suffice to say that with the cold weather here, buh byee to any pets as you would need to bring them in the house unless you are into seeing pets freeze to death ..
