ISIS -- history and recent events

Well, ISIS is in news almost every day and in control of vast areas in Iraq and Syria. And in the most brutal way possible. This is an attempt to study who they are and what they have been up to.

I should say this in the beginning. I am not sure if they are the most brutal of organizations in the world today. The difference between ISIS and other groups and regimes is that ISIS would proudly post gruesome videos of what they do to their captives online. Others are covert about what they do.

ISIS perhaps is baiting western governments to intervene which would give this organization a great boost in terms of legitimacy and recruitment.

For me, what happened in Iraq has a lot to do with Arab Culture and Political structure. That culture is NOT READY for ‘democracy’. You would surely fail if you try to view their cuntry from the lens of democracy and try to bring ‘freedom’ that country by force. Following is a very good piece trying to integrate Arab military strategies and their culture:

Why Arabs Lose Wars :: Middle East Quarterly

…Decisions are made and delivered from on high, with very little lateral communication. This leads to a highly centralized system, with authority hardly ever delegated. Rarely does an officer make a critical decision on his own; instead, he prefers the safe course of being identified as industrious, intelligent, loyal—and compliant. Bringing attention to oneself as an innovator or someone prone to make unilateral decisions is a recipe for trouble. As in civilian life, conformism is the overwhelming societal norm; the nail that stands up gets hammered down. Orders and information flow from top to bottom; they are not to be reinterpreted, amended, or modified in any way…

The following article is perhaps the best and balanced that I have come across describing the origins and nature of this band of animals and their breaking-away from Al-Qaeda:

Re: ISIS -- history and recent events

^^

1st it was Shah of Iran - Ally of USA in ME and US protected its interest through him and then Fall of SHAH

Shia Revolution in Iran - US used it to control Arabs - and Arabs got into Iraq-Iran read Shia vs Suni war

Then the war was over, Soon After Saddam became the villian (once hero of arab turned villian) and for a decade US used him as a bogey man to control ME

Then Come Al-Qaida/Usama and new bogey man came into being, (Again once friend now foe) for a decae US used him and then he was gone

Later there was Arab Spring, revolutions and bogeyman named democracy emerged but no that was just an illusion, time gained to plan and install a new bogeyman... ISIS

rest is history... It'll take US a decade or so to eliminate this bogeyman, and when it'll be done a new one'll be there to replace him...

Sad that they didn’t try and sell them… Brave men!!! Scared of ancient books! :frowning:

While the world was watching the Academy Awards ceremony, the people of Mosul were watching a different show. They were horrified to see ISIS members burn the Mosul public library. Among the many thousands of books it housed, more than 8,000 rare old books and manuscripts were burned.

“ISIS militants bombed the Mosul Public Library. They used improvised explosive devices,” said Ghanim al-Ta’an, the director of the library. Notables in Mosul tried to persuade ISIS members to spare the library, but they failed…

Iraqi Sunnis join feared Shiite militia to battle IS | GlobalPost

Wearing a camouflage uniform with militia patches and a green headband, Nawar Mohammed is the image of an Iraqi Shiite fighter except for one detail: he is Sunni.
Mohammed is one of some 250 Sunni residents of Al-Alam who joined Asaib Ahl al-Haq, an Iranian-backed Shiite militia with a fearsome reputation for kidnappings and killings targeting their community, to battle the Islamic State group after it seized their town.

It would once have been all but unthinkable for a member of Iraq’s Sunni Arab minority to join a Shiite militia, but opposition to IS, which overran large areas north and west of Baghdad last June, is transcending deep-seated sectarian divisions…
