Isa (AS) dead or alive. In the light of Quran and Hadith.

2:111 - " produce your proof , if you are truthful "

Asslam o alaikum dear readers,
The reason of this thread is to discuss a very important belief mainstream Muslims hold regarding Jesus AS and Him being taken alive to heavens. I would like to have discussion on this issue based ONLY on Quran and Ahadith. Keep in mind, I will not be bringing anything from the beliefs of the Ahmadiyya movement in Islam. Everything will be said here according to the teachings of Quran and ahadith.

Also, keep in mind, if i have questions from people who hold the belief of Him taken up alive, those question by no means should be taken as attacking your belief but to think for yourself and coming up with answer again from Quran and ahadith. Lets make Quran and ahadith a standard in this debate. If people who will be opposing me have questions , please ask, but make sure those questions does not attack the ahmadiyya movement in Islam. For sometime , just forget that i belong to ahmadiyya muslim jamaat in this thread. Everything here will be based on Quran and ahadith.

Lets have a very healthy and topic related discussion here. No question about jamaat e Ahmadiyya here. Though, this discussion may lead some people to think and understand about the claims that the founder of ahmadiyya jamaat made.

I personally believe Jesus As of Nazareth is no longer alive. Some logical and simple reasoning as to why i do not believe in him being alive. Quran and ahadith will be provided later in the thread.

  • He was human and theres an age limit of humans. Jesus AS like all humans lived and it is apparent that He must have died in this Earth.
  • It goes against Quran when Quran only refers to Him as prophet of Israel, and upon his arrival He will be a follower of Islam.
  • It goest against the word Khataman nabiyeen ( if taken literally as last prophet ) if He comes back.

Now, show me the right path, and prove me wrong when i bring Quranic verses supporting my belief. We all agree that Isa AS just like any other human or prophet, was a true prophet of Allah too. Nothing more or less. Following are verses from Quran to think about..( with a little comments of my own )..

17:93 Or thou have a house of gold or thou ascend up into heaven; and we will not believe in thy ascension until thou send down to us a book that we can read.’ Say, ‘Holy is my Lord! I am not but a man sent as a Messenger

When Kuffaar asks Muhammad PBUH to bring down a book from heaven and only then will they believe Him, the reply given to them by Holy prophet was that He is a human and a messenger.

5:75(76 for some) The Messiah, son of Mary, **was *only a Messenger; surely, Messengers *like unto him had indeed passed away before him. And his mother was a truthful woman. They both used to eat food. See how We explain the Signs for their good, and see how they are turned away.

Look at this verse extra carefully. They both used to eat food. Meaning, they no longer do. If someone here comes and tell me that they are still eating food in heaven then please see the following verses..

21:08 (09 for some).. “And We did not give them bodies that ate no food, nor were they to live for ever**” **

25:21 ( 20 for some )..And We never sent any Messengers before thee but surely they ate food and walked in the streets. And We make some of you a trial for others. Will you *then *be steadfast? And thy Lord is All- Seeing.

See how the 2 verses above helped understand the 5:75 verse? Quran saying Prophets were humans which required food to eat.. then it says that Jesus and His mother Mary USED to eat food. They no longer eat now. The one who no longer eat is dead. Keep in mind in verse 5:75, Allah added Mary with Jesus. If Mary is dead, so is Jesus AS.

Also a verse from Quran to look at is the 3:144(145 for some), which was recited by Abu Bakr Sadiq RA, upon holy Prophet PBUH’s death.

3:144 ( or 145 for some )And Muhammad is only a Messenger. Verily, all Messengers have passed away before him. If then he die or be slain, will you turn back on your heels? And he who turns back on his heels shall not harm Allah at all. And Allah will certainly reward the grateful.

this verse was the first verse on which Muslim had their first ijmaah on. All messengers have passed away before him. Had there been any doubt about this, then the possibility of Muhammad PBUH not dying was surely there. But since all messengers died before Him, he SAW died as well.

Note : the verse just quoted above uses the word " Qad khalat " which means died before.. examples of this word can be found in verses numbers 46:17, 41:25, 13:30, 2:134, 33:38, 24:34, 10:102, 5:75. ( one verse ahead for some )..Therefore, translating qad khalat in verse number 3:144 (quoted above) differently then the verses to which i’ve given references is not wise to do.

Since we all Muslims believe Jesus AS was just like us a human as well.. here is what Quran has to say to humans.. which include prophets as well…

In Quran, 7:25(26 for some) Allah says.. ‘Therein shall you live, and therein shall you die, and therefrom shall you be brought forth.’

and then another verse says … 77:26-27(27-28 for some) " have we not made the earth so as to hold the living and the dead "

For now, this is what i’d like to talk about.. please correct me if im wrong in my understanding of the verses I quoted above. JazakAllah. I will inshallah be presenting some more quranic references which supports my belief that Jesus son of Mary AS is dead.

PS: Also , I know what other people will be presenting in support of their belief.. 4:157,158 (158-159 for some).. which is ..

And their saying, ‘We did kill the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah;’ whereas they slew him not, nor crucified him, but he was made to appear to them like one crucified; and those who differ therein are certainly in a state of doubt about it; they have no definite knowledge thereof, but only follow a conjecture; and they did not convert this conjecture into a certainty; On the contrary, Allah exalted him to Himself. And Allah is Mighty, Wise

Please note , no matter how you translate this verse, there is NO MENTION of BODY or HEAVEN. Nor is there any mention of Jesus AS’s look alike being switched on the cross. Is it reasonable to conclude that whoever is NOT KILLED nor crucified is taken up to heaven ?.. is this the only option left or the person who is not killed nor crucifed die a natural death?

For now, this is it.. please bring Quranic references to support your point of view. JazakAllah. May Allah give us strength to understand Quran properly and to help us see the true light. Aamin.

Re: Isa (AS) dead or alive. In the light of Quran and Hadith.

For purpose of discussion it will be better that you state your full view of the events. This shud include the following

  • Did Jesus die on cross?
  • Did he survive the cross?
  • Where and how did he die?

For without this the discussion will be incmplete.

Re: Isa (AS) dead or alive. In the light of Quran and Hadith.

please do note (readers) THAT THE QURANIC VERSES in post #1 are from Ahmdi quran ....wrong translations. and also OUT OF CONTEXT

**Isa (A.S) and His Second Coming

**Muslims do believe that Isa (A.S) was sent down as a Prophet of Allah (God), but he (Jesus) is not God or Lord, nor the son of God. Muslims do not believe that Isa (A.S), also known as Jesus by Christians and others, is dead or was ever crucified. We believe that he was raised to heaven and is there, and will descend at the appointed time, end all wars, and bring peace to the world. Like Jesus (A.S), Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam) is also a Prophet and Messenger. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam) is the last Prophet, though, and there is none after him. Hence, Islam is the last religion, complete, with the Holy Qur'an as the unchanged and perfect word of God for over 1400 years, as God promised to preserve it till the last day for all of humankind, unlike sacred texts of other religions which have mulitple versions and are "revised" periodically. God, or Allah in Arabic, is Divine and Supreme Being and Creator.

What the Holy Qur'an says about Jesus:

They slew him not, nor did they crucify him but it was made dubious to them.
(Holy Qur'an, Surah Nisaa, Verse 157)

Hadhrat Isa (A.S) himself told of the coming of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam). In the Bible, Jesus (A.S) says,

If you love me, Keep my commandments. And I will pray to the Father and He shall give you another comforter that he may abide with you forever.
(Bible, John 14-15/16)

But when the comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the spirit of Truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me, and he also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
(Bible, John 15-26/27)

I have yet many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear them now. How be it when he, the spirit of Truth will come, he will guide you into all truth, for he shall speak not of himself, but whatsoever he shall hear, that he shall speak, and he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine, and he shall show it unto you.
(Bible, John 16-12/14)

Ulema (learned scholars in Islam) have said that the person who is described by Hadhrat Isa (A.S) to come after him - in the above verse - does not comply with any other person but Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam).

In this case, the "comforter" he mentions is none other than Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam) and his laws and way of life (Shariah) and Book (Holy Qur'an) are those that Hadhrat Isa (A.S) asks his followers to abide by.

The "person" whom Jesus (A.S) prophecised will come after him, is called Pargaleeta in the Bible . This word was deleted by interpreters and translators and changed at times to "Spirit of Truth" and at other times, to "comforter" and sometimes "Holy Spirit." The original Greek and its meaning is "one whom people praise exceedingly." The sense of the word, then, is applicable to the word Muhammad in Arabic, since Muhammad means "the praised one."

Jesus (A.S) also says in the Bible,

... and a little while and you shall not see me; and again a little while, you shall see me because I go to the Father.
(Bible, John 16:16)

... and the Holy Qur'an says,

And surely they slew him not. But Allah (God) raised him unto Himself.
(Holy Qur'an, Surah Nisaa, Verse 157-158)

As such, Muslims believe that Hadhrat Isa (A.S) was raised to heaven. According to Hadith, he is on the second heaven. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam) mentioned, "During the Meraj (Ascension), I met Hadhrat Isa (A.S) on the second heaven. I found him of medium stature, reddish white. His body was so clean and clear, that it appeared as though he had just performed ghusal (ablution, cleansing of the entire body) and come." In another Hadith, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) mentioned to the Jews that, " Hadhrat Isa (A.S) is not dead, he will most surely return to you before Qiyamat (the Day of Judgement)."

May Allah Guide all people to the Truth. Aameen.

Hadhrat Isa's (A.S) Descension - The Physical Features of Hadhrat Isa (A.S)

He will resemble the famous Sahabi (A.S) Hadhrat Urwa bin Masoodi (R.A). He will be of average height and red and white in colour. His hair spread to the shoulders, straight, neat and shining as after a bath. On bending his head, it will seem as if pearls are falling. He will have an armour on his body. He will be wearing two pieces of cloth light yellow in color.

His Descension

He will descend on a Jamaat (group) that will be righteous at the time and comprising of 800 men and 400 women. The people will be preparing for war at the time against Dajjal (the anti-Christ). It will be time for Fajr prayers, and Imam Mahdi will be the Amir (leader). From the darkness of the dawn, a sound will suddenly be heard that "one who listens to your pleas has come" -- the righteous people will look everywhere and their eyes will fall on Isa (A.S). Briefly, at the time of Fajr, Isa (A.S) will descend. When descending, Isa (A.S)'s hands will be on the shoulders of two angels (according to another source (Kab Abrar), a cloud will carry him). On their insistence Hadhrat Isa will introduce himself. He will inquire about their enthusiasm and thoughts on Jihad against Dajjal. Hadhrat Isa (A.S) will descend on the eastern side near the Minaret in Damascus (or in Baitul-Muqaddus by Imam Mahdi). At the time Imam Mahdi will have proceeded forward to lead the Fajr Salaat. The Iqamat of the Salaat would have been said (already recited) and Imam Mahdi will call Hadhrat Isa (A.S) for Imamat (to lead the prayer), but he (Hadhrat Isa (A.S) will instead tell Imam Mahdi to lead the prayer since the Iqamat of that Salaat has already been said for him. Thus Imam Mahdi will lead the prayer, and Hadhrat Isa (A.S) will follow him. After the ruku, he will make this statement: "Allah has killed Dajjal and the Muslims have appeared."

The Killing of Dajjal (Anti-Christ) And The Victory of The Muslims

After the completion of Fajr Salaat (congregational dawn prayers), Hadhrat Isa (A.S) will open the door behind him where Dajjal accompanied by 70,000 Yahudis (Jews) will be. He will indicate with his hand to move away between him (Hadhrat Isa (A.S) and Dajjal. Dajjal will then see Hadhrat Isa (A.S). At that time every Kafir on whom the breath of Hadhrat Isa (A.S) will reach, will die. His breath will reach up to the distance of his eyesight. The Muslims will then come down from the mountains and break loose on the army of Dajjal. There will be war, Dajjal will retreat, and Hadhrat Isa (A.S) will pursue Dajjal. Hadhrat Isa (A.S) will have two flexible swords and one shield with him and with these he will kill Dajjal at the Gate of Hudd. He willl show the Muslims the blood of Dajjal which will get on his shield. Eventually the Yahudis will be selected and killed. The swine will be killed and the cross broken. People will revert to Islam. Wars will end, and people will return to their respective countries. One Jamaat (group) of Muslims will remain in his service and companionship.

Hadhrat Isa (A.S) will go to Fajr Rawha and perform Haj or Umrah (or both) from there. He will also go to the grave of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) and present his greetings and Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) will reply. People will live comfortable lives. The wall of Yajooj and Majooj (Gog and Magog) will then break.

The Blessings of Hadhrat Isa (A.S)

  • Hadhrat Isa (A.S) will descend and stay on earth.

  • His descension will be in the last era of the Ummat.

  • He will be a just ruler and a fair judge.

  • There will be peace, harmony and tranquility during the time of Hadhrat Isa (A.S)'s stay in the world.

  • There will be no animosity for a period of seven years, even between two persons.

  • Snakes and scorpions will not harm anyone to the extent that if a child put his hand in its mouth, he will not be harmed.

  • Wild animals will not harm anyone.

  • If a man will pass a lion, he will not be troubled or harmed, or even if any girl will open its mouth to test if it will do anything.

  • The camels will graze among lions, cheetahs with cattle and the jackals with goats.

  • The fertility of the land will increase to such an extent that even if a seed is planted in a hard rock, it will sprout.

  • A pomegranate will be so huge that a jamaat will be able to eat it and the people will use its peel as shade.

  • There will be so much barakaat (blessing) in milk that a camel will suffice for a huge jamaat, a cow for a tribe and a goat for a family.

  • In short, life will be most pleasant after the descension of Isa (A.S).

**
Hadhrat Isa (A.S)'S Life

**After his descension on earth, Hadhrat Isa (A.S.) will marry. He will have children, and he will remain on earth 19 years after marriage. He will pass away and Muslims will perform his Janaza Salaat and bury him next to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). (Tirmidhi)

I can verify to this, The translations are incorrect. and therefore we must not take this thread so serious since its one sided. Even thought the poster said Not to question Ahmadiya , but this makes it question since the referances are one sided ahmadiya.

please make up your mind poster and give us the translation according to the MAJORITY. only then this will prevent people from questioning the ahmadiya.

You are confusing the issue. The issue is whether Isa (as) is dead or alive according to quran or ahadith. Apart from that we can only say with certainty what is in Quran & Ahadith. The rest of evidence is not admissible to avoid controversy and in effort to come to a conclusion on isa (as) death or not which is an important issue on its own. Keep it simple and clean.

ROFL...

all qurans are Ahmadi quran...and I am sure there is only one...

If "ahmadi" quran has "wrong translations. and also OUT OF CONTEXT" then I am sure you'll be able to point out. What are you worried about?

I will post my note to readers again for people who have slow brains......with more clarification

please do note (readers) THAT THE TRANSLATIONS OF QURANIC VERSES in post #1 are from Ahmdi TRANSLATIONS which are wrong translations. and these verses are also OUT OF CONTEXt ...

There is no such thing as Ahmadi Quran. The Quran can't be changed remember?

You happy now?

Why don't you post proofs from the Quran and the Hadith which prove that Jesus (PBUH) was raised to heaven, ALIVE?

Where does it say Allah raised him "dead"????????

Well isn't that the obvious...

Where does it say Allah raised him "alive"???????? How many times Allah has raised anyone "alive" to make this a normal assumption? Raising "alive" is not normal so needs proof. Dying is normal in our everyday experience and so needs no further proof.

No, it's not obvious from this verse that "Jesus was raised "dead".

Are we gonna keep carry on doing this?

Who said its normal to be taken up alive by Allah?

What kind of a proof? A scientific proof or a written proof from the Scriptures?

And that makes you correct? I don't think so.

Ashab-e-kahf slept for centuries in the cave and then woke up and Uzayr(AS) became alive after he was dead for so long, is that normal?

Did ashaf-e-klahaf go alive to heaven? No.

Where does it say in Quran or Ahadith that ISA (as) went up alive? Such a big event as ISA (as) going alive to heavens and no explicit mention of it? Obviously Allah did not wish us to think that ISA (as) went alive to heaven.

You can’t just “assume” your belief out of Quran.

Did you even read the verse? :smack:

It’s obvious because Jesus (PBUH) was a messanger like the messanger before him, who have passed away like any other human being.

Did I say Ashab e Kahf went to Heaven?

I can use the same arguments by saying that there's no explicit mention of Isa(AS) being dead in Quran.

True, that's why we also need Hadith to understand Quran correctly.

Quran does not support your argument of "taken up alive is not normal" at all. And that's what I wanted to prove.

There are two things

  1. Passing away doesn’t necessarily mean “dying”.

  2. It doesn’t say “All of Them” have passed away, it says “many”.

@test01

how many times did Allah Ta'ala specify in the Qur'an that he raised His Prophets or anyone for that matter - dead or alive? and don't forget to read the context: That they said (in boast), "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah";- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not: Nay, Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise; [4:157-158]
Points to note from these ayaat

1 - Christians claim that Jesus (peace be upon him) died on the cross, he was resurrected after three days and then raised up to heaven (ALIVE)
2 - Allah Ta'ala is refuting their belief that he (Jesus - peace be upon him) wasn't killed by them, nor crucified. Since he did not die, hence no resurrection. However, he was raised up. The disagreement among Muslims and Christians is on matter whether he was crucified or not. Following the sequence of events, if he was not killed by them that day but Allah raised him up how does it dispprove that he wasn't raised up alive?

So please enlighten us what other meaning "passed away" has.

These are the only ones I could find in a dictionary.
